  1. It seems to me the Twins are not avoiding analytics so much as they are trying to balance numbers with the actual person on the field. At the end of the day, human beings still have to play the game. It's a great thing to have a guy on the team who is All World, with great numbers, but, if that same guy, coughPuigcough, is clubhouse cancer, it can bring down the whole team. Numbers will tell you what the person is capable of, but they will not tell you who the person is.
  2. Yeah, but the Twins needed someone to put fans in the seats. Joe "MVP batting title" Mauer put fans in the seats. A team of forgettable cheap FA's does not. Also, what happens when you actually get to the point of needing to sign FA's and you've a reputation of signing people who are nothing more than MLB filler? Heck, the Twins may have already paid the price for having that reputation. Ordinary MN Twins fans are not as knowledgeable as the fans on Twins Daily. Admit it, we're all baseball junkies to a certain extent. We all understand the need to dump players and start the rebuild. Management, however, still needs the casual fan to attend games.* *My $.25. Even with inflation, we all know what it's worth.
  3. Unless the Sox have learned to field the ball (someone may have even written a rather prescient game thread mentioning this very fact) it's going to be a long season for the Sox. Anyway, weren't the Sox supposed to run away with the division last year? * *Of course, it's also possible Twins fielding will match the ineptitude of the Sox. Which will make for interesting divisional play.
  4. Sigh. Before all star break, Pelfrey was a difference maker and was the staff ace. After all star, something went wrong, no idea what. After Santana came back from suspension, he wasn't making it through the first couple of innings until Allen spotted that Santana was falling off to one side of the mound. Once that got straightened out, Santana was good to very good. So, yes, you need to explain a little better, because the over-all numbers do not reflect what happened during the season. (great, I'm defending the front office not signing at least a second echelon reliever)
  5. I'll give Neil Allen a chance to turn Abad around. Allen was able to get Santana straightened out last year. I'm pretty sure Allen made a difference with Mike Pelfrey, too.
  6. My favorite Laudner moment: He was doing some sidelines work and was asked about what pitch he'd call next, just after the batter had fouled a low inside breaking ball of his knee. I don't remember which announcer it was, but the announcer was asking Tim whether he'd call low and away, high and away, etc. Laudner's response? "No, you go down in there again."
  7. http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/70087564/v249094283 Because no Tiger thread is complete without this video.
  8. That home run by Dozier probably ranks as the biggest hit I've seen during the regular season.
  9. How many games did Dozier play in his best season versus last year? The eyeball test tells me that Dozier tends to wear down about All Star break. It makes me wonder if Mr. Dozier would benefit from a few more days off.
  10. I have to believe this means the Twins are expecting either Arcia or Kepler to play right with Robinson as the late inning defensive replacement. Unless a Cuddyer reunion is on the offing. (I am so glad I'm not where people can throw things at me for making such a suggestion...pipe down over there, it's a joke...right?)
  11. Thank you for the game recap, Seth. I didn't get to watch, due to mlb.tv deciding not to work, for some reason.
  12. I understand where John is coming from, but...Duffey is approaching his innings limit for the year. Santana is not eligible for post-season. May is in the bullpen and not available to start in the playoffs. That leaves Pelfrey, Gibson and and Milone to start in the playoffs, should the Twins get there. Like it or not and even though the Twins are in a playoff race, the Twins probably need to get Hughes some innings just in case. Baseball is a cruel game and sometimes there just are not any breaks. Which is why baseball is the best game in the world.
  13. Duffy's curveball is making me laugh. And glad I'm not trying to hit the stupid thing. Wow.
  14. I grew with some people who made incredible Ebelskivers. Yum.
  15. Who are these "Vikrings of which you speak? There is only Baseball Season and Not Baseball Season. Not baseball season to our northern friends is also known as "ice fishing season. (although ice fishing season is also known as "summer" in the civilized world, but I digress) Not baseball season is also important, as that is the time of year wise men get together and spend enormous amounts of money for no discernible reason other than to win the baseball season before the season actually starts. I guess from the context of what you say the "Vidrings" play some sort of sport. Well, enlighten me, if you must, but be warned, I do not much care for the foolishness of other so-called "sports."
  16. Considering the state of the US dollar, pretty soon, those values will be reversed.
  17. It depends, how much money do you have? Can you survive on chicken hot dish? Would you be interested in joining me at the rifle/pistol range? And how do you feel about me heading north to partake in some of the fabulous Canadian fishing? (Fishing in Canada is one of my best childhood memories. Along with Kamloops.)
  18. I've been in the Crystal Palace a time or two and been blinded by some of the suits. The Crystal Palace is sort of a museum of country bling and twang along with live music and okay food. Did I mention the Crystal Palace is about a 15 minute drive from my house?
  19. The suits are probably in the Crystal Palace in Bakersfield, CA. Guess how I might know that...
  20. I have to admit, I'm on the edge of my seat every game right now. Roller Coasters are overrated compared to a baseball playoff race.
  21. Wait, it's cold in early September? Going to be an early winter. Cool, they'll have to plow Target Field for the Word Series! Did I mention I think it would be awesome if the Dodgers had to come to MN for the Series? Nothing like a warm weather team in MN during a cold snap.
  22. Someone might have written a game thread referencing this very same phenomena.
  23. crap, my mlb.com feed isn't working. Arggh!!!
