Amid all the talk about Kody Clemens’ modest statistics, low expectations, or whether a guy with his numbers even should be in the lineup regularly, he’s gone out there every day and done the best he can to help this team win. He’s made this season a whole lot more interesting than any of us had a right to hope or expect.

I won’t argue with it. They have a shortstop performing well in AAA, which can’t be said about the big club. Are we figuring he won’t play as well there as the rotating cast of characters who have been filling in there since Lee moved to 3rd? I wonder how they could find out?

…like a second baseman who’s never had to field a ricochet off a wall.

I figure every call-up is a gamble, but they keep calling up the same guys and getting the same results. Culpepper and/or Jenkins at least would be something they haven’t tried. And who knows, maybe the vote of confidence is just the catalyst those guys need. Heck, even if they turn out to be streaky and have confidence issues like Royce Lewis, at least that’s an interesting team on the field.

If that is what the front office believes, then they should be trading everyone for prospects that haven't started their service time clock. At some point they have to stop planning for a perfect hypothetical future and start trying to win games now. The CBA almost certainly will change things, but that’s a problem for the future. Right now the problem is “Who can play centerfield (or shortstop) and might make a positive difference for this team, now?” There’s a third of a season yet to be played.

I’m thinking it’s the positive present implications that a lot of folks are thinking about. Winning some games in 2028 will certainly be advantageous. Winning some (more) now also would be good.

Even if this weren’t 100% correct, you’d think someone in the front office would have noticed that doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results STILL isn’t working.

Josh Bell could be fun. Does he actually own a fielder’s glove?

I get that point of view as well. But when you look at a guy like Buxton who’s got more good road behind him than ahead of him, why not roll the dice? Will he still be playing in 2028 when it would be time to cash in those trade chips? Is it worth trying now for just one guy and a slew of over-optimistic fans? Why not? As Yogi Berra once said, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”

We still owe them for 1965. This is one for the baseball gods to decide.

    I dunno, check his initials—GM.

No one is arguing that they’re going to win it all, just that you can’t if you don’t make the playoffs. And while I’d love to see another World Championship, I’d also love to see the Twins playing some meaningful post-season baseball. I’d prefer either to the alternatives.

True enough, but with the CBA threatening to delay or disrupt the 2027 season and the chance to see the Twins in post-season play this year, this is a good time for TP to show everyone that he wasn’t just blowing smoke. I don’t think he and I would agree on what constitutes a contending team. Managing to earn a wildcard slot isn’t quite the same as having a shot at a world championship, but extending the season for a game or more by making the team better at the deadline instead of tearing it down again would be a clear and welcome statement. We may not see much meaningful baseball until 2028, otherwise

I see it rankled some people, but the original poster is right—most of us here are more interested in how the front office might add or subtract from the roster to improve the team, than we are what happens on the field. While the latter is kind of the required reading to formulate informed opinions about the former, playing GM has become pretty much the default among fans. With so many more ways to analyze players and games, the business of baseball seems to have become more interesting than the games themselves. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, it’s just different. What actually provides the entertainment seems to be second-guessing the front office and owners, not so much listening to the games, maybe second-guessing the manager, and hoping against hope that they win. At least if you go by what gets talked about here every day.

How about keep him and build around him, instead of rebooting the rotation and roster every year? Build on strengths, or has that idea gone out of style?

Don’t trade Jeffers, don’t trade Ryan. Keep the current guys together. Maybe tinker around the edges to fill what holes they can, bring up the most deserving from St. Paul, and make us believe they really want to field a competitive team, and actually make the playoffs. 2027 looks like it’s going to be a lost season anyway, while the owners and players association fight their way to a new CBA. So let’s have some fun while we can. Let’s see what these current guys can do. Heck, maybe some of them still could be around in 2028 when that “young core” we keep hearing about are ready to go.

The Twins seem to have a lot of prospects who end up on the roster as one dimensional players as the team tries to fill gaps. They struggle, then we all end up talking about how the Twins should try to trade them for other prospects. YMMV, but that’s what I’m seeing.
  18. mluebker
It would be nice if the Twins would let a guy develop a little longer and then be able stay when he finally gets here, instead of rushing him onto the roster, expect him to rescue a team perpetually struggling with mediocrity, then bouncing him back to St. Paul when he doesn’t immediately live up to expectations.

I love the optimism and the public reminder to Tom Pohlad of what he promised. But I have no confidence that it's going to happen.

No more fixer-uppers until they have the current ones fixed.

Right now, Bell is doing what he does best, hitting the ball. And I think that has more value to a wildcard team (hopefully) than another low end bullpen guy.

When I was a kid, I figured they both were Harmon Killebrew with some sort of previously unknown superpower!
  23. mluebker
I stumbled on that as well. Maybe “deep, but cloudy.”

Put me down as a fan of this original and not so much of the various alternates that have become so popular recently. When you have a classic—Yankees, Dodgers, Giants, Red Sox, Cardinals, Braves—you showcase it.

We’re not going to see another championship team unless there’s an organizational shift from defensive versatility to defensive excellence. Too many young guys on the roster whose best option is going to be DH because they never learned to play a position well enough to own it.
