  1. I have heard that reading baseball webpages with intelligent baseball analysis and that have thoughtful, compelling discussion makes one about ten to 15 years younger than their chronological age.
  2. I think there is a glaringly obvious exclusion from that list. Someone who was with the Twins the last time they won a play-off series. Someone who could bring veteran leadership as well as show an incredible range of skills all around the diamond. Someone who grew up during a time that he would be able to bring break dance moves to the dance party. Someone who is really available and ready to get back into the game where he was meant to be. Of those listed above - AJ fills a need, but I would love to find someone other than him. Is the league that lacking in catcher depth? It would be nice to have more than a one year band aid who has potential to be a club house distraction.
  3. In addition to the reoccurrence of the concussion symptoms, wasn't a big part of DL stint last year due to the neck issues flaring up again? It seems like his body is really giving him quite a few signs to back off. I feel like he is an injury away from having life time health issues, if he has not already passed that point. It has to be incredibly tough to walk away from something you really love and the only thing you have ever really known as a career (as evidenced by Jerry Kill this week). He is one of my sentimental favorites, I can understand why he still wants to play (and imagine he would love to return home so to speak), but I don't think the team has greater needs and I think it would be in his best interest to contemplate stepping away from the game (as hard as that must be).
  4. I am not sure what you mean by that... http://sportsnaut.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/0143.jpg I thought it was a bad decision to bring him back -- I was wrong -- I think it ended up being a positive movie. I am also glad he is not coming back - I think it might have had shades of Favre 2010. Still kudos to him for a great career and retiring in a way that will not cloud the off-season or next season with speculation.
  5. True -- we do not have Canada's perfect record of producing great musicians. http://assets-s3.usmagazine.com/uploads/assets/articles/57928-justin-bieber-why-i-wore-overalls-to-meet-canadian-prime-minister-stephen-harper/1353939694_justin-bieber-article.jpg http://image.slidesharecdn.com/celinedionthecanadianlegend-140224191034-phpapp01/95/celine-dion-the-canadian-legend-1-638.jpg?cb=1393269088
  6. Damn - just when I was going to share my you always remember where you were sports memory of when my small town defeated Grand Rapids in hockey 4 to 2. No - it was not even a tournament game, but sometimes in a small town you need to cling to whatever sports victory memory you can get. Our other big sports bragging is one of our alumni was on the 1980 hockey team. My grade school band played home on the range for him when he made an appearance at the school to sign autographs. Not exactly game 7 excitement - but damn close. I am kind of bitter I can not find a clip of any of this on youtube. Oh well - at least there is chicken dinner tonight.
  7. I remember we were almost late for my sister's confirmation because we were watching the end of the 1980 gold medal game against Finland at my grandparents. The championship game was actually scheduled for a Sunday morning - doubt that would happen now. A lot of people were walking into the church at the last minute. I think it was an early afternoon service. As much as people rightfully remember the US-USSR game, the championship game was not a bit of a nail-biter at times as well.
  8. It is a long season, no one associated with baseball feels 100% once it is September. This is when you can see who the greats are when they turn in work product as if they are still as energized and sharp as they were when they were coming out of spring training.
  9. I don't think it was him just putting it into words - I think he was speaking from experience.
  10. It does not surprise me he and Chief were classmates. He actually used a lot of Chief's ideas in his writings.
  11. Did you name the child Bert in honor of his big game (or simply because you really admired him)?
  12. Attempting to anyways -- sadly I do not know or remember many knock knock jokes.
  13. It is now hard to imagine a world without the Twins Daily page, but it was not around in the 80's and 90's. Now you have thousands of fans that would rather follow the game on a TD game thread and are less likely to go to the ball park.
  14. I looked up people who were born on Sept. 20th to see if I could determine your true identity in the real world. I have it narrowed down that your real world identity is either Sophia Loren or George R.R. Martin. You have the worldliness of sophistication of Loren (and it clear English is your second language) but your writing has the focus and brevity of Martin's style.
  15. I think the Vikings are going to have to make it without me tonight.
  16. Ye Olde Chicken Dinner as Chaucer foretold.... http://pcwww.liv.ac.uk/~pelagic/images/Canterbury%20Tales.gif
  17. I found this quote about the Canterbury Tales: "Chaucer's characters each express different—sometimes vastly different—views of reality." It seems like his story really might have just been a premonition of TD game threads that would centuries later..
  18. If after the opening series against the Tigers last April, if you were told, when these teams meet in mid-September one of these teams will be in the central cellar the other will be in serious play-off contention, how many people would have predicted the Tigers being the cellar team and the Twins being the play-off contender? [i know you should not put too much weight in April baseball but I was not feeling overly confident about the season at the time -- I was very knee-jerk]
  19. Anyone remember when Buckwheat was shot? It was SNL spoofing how often the news showed Reagan getting shot. Sadly, that was nothing compared to how redundant and/or exploitative the coverage would be now.
  20. Chief was mixing up his Presidents-- he meant to say he was of a similar age when Lincoln went to the Ford Theater.
  21. http://www.thegauntlet.com/pics/abe-celebrate.jpg http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/photo-19.jpg
  22. Probably like the chicken Brian made last month.
  23. Isn't this the speech Herb Brooks told his team right before they went to play the Russians?
