  1. Bosses are responsible for the productivity of those working under them. I doubt Steve Jobs was personally on the line in the factory assembling iPhones, but nevertheless it was going to be his credit/blame if it prospered or failed. As it should be.
  2. Winning games in 2019. Flipping him for assets if he has a bounce back and they aren't winning games. Exclusive negotiating window after the season if it's a good fit for both sides. Hopefully competent bridge to Gordon/Arraez/Lewis if one or more are ready by 2020.
  3. Where his salary ranks on the roster has nothing to do with whether he was bought low or not. He's coming off a disastrous season, and was non tendered a year after getting MVP votes. If he were hitting the open market after 2017, he'd get 5+ years and $80+ million. It's absolutely buying low.
  4. I for one really like this signing. It's the type of buy low, high ceiling type of signing that I always wanted Ryan to try more of.
  5. There are two posters in here saying that Kepler is easily replaceable, and suggest trading him for a front of the rotation pitcher. Why on earth would a team trade us front line pitching, the second hardest position to fill in all of sports, for such an easily replaceable player??
  6. I think the odds of him signing an extension are extremely low, which is reflected in the ho hum return. And why would he sign an extension? He's only 1 year from free agency.
  7. But there is a reason why people will line up to do this for free. McDonalds isn't getting any takers if they put this same job post out. The internship has value that outweighs the lack of compensation, clearly, or people wouldn't be willing to do it. I consider myself liberal, mostly, but I also place great value in the free market. If two parties agree to terms, I'm almost always leery of getting in the way of that, so long as it's not exploitative, which I don't believe this is. Again, maybe I'm romanticizing something that isn't real, but I believe that if someone is hungry enough for this opportunity, they'll find a way to make it work financially, even if that means they don't sleep for 5 months.
  8. Are we really going to start criticizing the FO for things that Doogie is "reporting"? I think we'll get more accurate results posting what a magic 8 ball says.
  9. If they give $50 million to DJ, I'm out. And no, that's not even a realistic offer for Kluber, not close.
  10. You don't think pitchers tend to nibble more at a place like Coors? Of course walk rates are going to be higher there.
  11. Ahhh, "sources". I smell a contract extension on the horizon. Or, at least more money added. Do these college football coaches have the greatest racket going or what?
  12. Great strawman Brock. A cursory glance at my posting history shows that I clearly think Washington is humming along perfectly (not). If you're saying that people with wealth and power have a massive head start over those who don't, well yeah, welcome to the real world for as long as wealth and power have existed. Nothing we do will ever change that.
  13. Why are you splitting the difference? .673 career OPS away from Coors Field, .698 last year.
  14. Curious where Barack Obama fits into this theory that poor and working class are shut out of politics?
  15. You are probably right about it being bad policy. But, as I outlined previously, there are plenty of hours in the week to work two full time jobs. Medical Residents work as much as 130 hours per week. Perhaps not everyone can handle that, or don't want to, but I suspect that part of the reason for these highly sought internships being unpaid is to find the people who are driven enough to work 100+ hours a week and eat ramen 3 times a day, if that's what it takes. But who knows, maybe I'm romanticizing something that doesn't exist. Maybe it will just go to some rich kid that has daddy paying his rent.
  16. It's not similar. This is a short term investment that is practically guaranteed to pay dividends in the future. Minor league a baseball has no light at the end of the tunnel for 95% of them. But, like I said, you make some fair points. So I amend my original response from, "I don't know any anyone would have a problem with this being unpaid", to "I don't have a problem with this being unpaid." I view it as an investment. We don't pay people to attend college, and that's 4+ years. I don't think that someone who really wants this opportunity, I mean desperately, will endure any amount of misery to get it, which right or wrong, is probably the type of candidate Schumer is looking for, is going to let the financials get in the way. But, I could be underestimating how much impact that will have, I don't know.
  17. Those are fair points. It would be more of a grind for someone without support, that's for sure. But it's relatively short term, someone who wants it bad enough could make it work. I worked 85-100 hours per week for almost two years when I started my business, so there are enough hours in the day for someone to take this internship plus another job if they are dedicated, and willing to be miserable for a few months.
  18. Buxton has 4 years of team control.
  19. Interning for the minority senate leader is the opportunity of a lifetime. People will be lining up for this opportunity. Most of them would PAY big money for this internship. I don't understand why anyone would have a problem with it being unpaid. It's an investment, like college.
  20. They already signed Adrianza to a guaranteed contract. I get it's not a lot, but they didn't have to, and they did, so they aren't cutting him now.
  21. How does Harper make our pitchers better?
  22. None, but the entire FO was cleaned out during the offseason. McCarthy was the lone holdover.
  23. That's interesting, because I think one of Zimmer's biggest weaknesses is how undisciplined his teams are. They are constantly taking emotional penalties, especially the defense.
  24. I don't think it's fair to say that anyone who wouldn't trade Lewis thinks that Thor isn't "worth" a top prospect. There are plenty of things at the store that are "worth" their sticker prices, but that doesn't mean I want to buy them. If the Mets will take Kiriloff instead, then go for it. I'd rather keep Lewis though. Prospects often bust, or don't become the stars they are supposed to, that is true. But, sometimes they become superstars. And we could use one of those too, maybe more than we need an ace, even. I'm not trading Lewis for anyone, even though there are plenty of players who are worth a prospect of his stature.
  25. What would an .816 OPS from a guy that can play 3B cost on the open market? A lot more than $4.8 million. If you want a guy with 3B/1B/DH/OF flexibility for 4.8 million, you are probably looking at a 60 point OPS loss. The FO clearly thinks he made adjustments that make his .816 OPS sustainable, or they wouldn't have guaranteed him a contract.
