    Even more importantly, ace Frank Viola was traded for 5 players that included Aguilar and Tapani, not to mention David West. These three players pitched a combined 384.1 innings in '91 to a 3.16 ERA.

    No, you're absolutely right. No team will overpay for his years of control due to his injury history, and he's so risky already nearing his career high in innings. But he's been very effective when healthy and would return a decent prospect. Maybe one that looks like Gabriel Gonzalez when he came over from Seattle, borderline Top 100. As a Mets fan, I constantly think in terms of what could/should the Mets send to make a fair trade. And I think someone like AJ Ewing or Ryan Clifford seems about right. Ewing a very athletic outfielder that doesn't look like he'll ever really hit for power, Ryan Clifford a power bat-only player that looks like he'll struggle to hit .240.

    Trying to imagine what this would look like. Duran for Mark Vientos? Or Ronny Mauricio? Concur with above, seems like the Twins expecting the wrong return and going to result in little activity.

    Bullpen arms are so overvalued, especially carrying forward due to their extreme volitility. Not to mention this bullpen, high in talent for sure, proclaimed as one of the best in the league the last two seasons has actually faltered with results in the bottom half of the league. They have the highest FIP and WAR since 2024? Cool. They are also 21st in ERA, 24th in LOB%. Resulting in the 23rd highest WPA as a unit. Trade 2 of the 3 of Brock Stewart, Griffin Jax, and Jhoan Duran. Trade Coulombe. Trade Topa if anyone's interested. Reset the bullpen because who knows how effective any of these guys will be in 2027, which is when the Twins should be building their roster towards. You'd still have Varland, Sands and a bunch of hungry kids that you can patch together with quality waiver pick ups. And as this article suggests, the return on these arms would surprise you.

    Brooks Lee is maturing into a very poor man's Brice Turang. Brewers love their group of lighter hitting younger players filling out their IF but unlike Brooks, they've prioritized athleticism in their roster construction meaning faster, more dynamic, and better defense. Brooks Lee biggest shocker is that he's so slow. He would have been the perfect prospect to flip after the 2023 playoffs or at the 2024 trade deadline to improve the team. The mediocre skills are very pronounced meaning you have to think his bat is going to become special, which could still happen but I don't see it.

    This is why I'm all for tearing down this team. The core is a pitiful collection. Looking ahead to 2027, who would you want to make sure was on the Twins roster? Buxton and...?? Correa I would trade away in an instant if anything came up, but let's say he's designated as the immovable veteran, a la Javier Baez. Royce Lewis was always thought of as vital and now has proven himself now 26 years old to be a fairly unathletic, poor fielder that has hit .206/.267/.324 since last June 22nd in a not small sample of 412 PAs. Brooks Lee has always looked like a someone that will top out as a fine every day player, now a 24 year old that has barely hit better than Royce Lewis in even more playing time. Larnach and Wallner, both DHs thrown into the corners and neither with good enough of a bat to outshine their terrible defense. One of these types of players is fine for a roster, but the Twins have a plethora. So, aside from Buxton you're looking at a batch of mediocre players and then hoping on the prospects. Not exactly the brightest of futures in the Twins organization. Perhaps refusing to choose a direction for 2 (soon to be 3) seasons had some ramifications.

    We've been hearing for two years now about how elite the bullpen is. At what point is the responsibility on them to show it?

    This "elite" bullpen is 21st in the league in WPA. I tend to look more towards FIP/xFIP which is what you're doing but results matter too, especially considering we're halfway through the season. And as much as I like Keaschall going forward, Twins fans have to hit the breaks expecting a kid that didn't even have an 850 OPS at either AA or AAA to save the offense based on a week of results in the big leagues. He's more likely to look like a more athletic Brooks Lee than he is a sudden boost to a struggling offense.

    I don't see how that's obvious at all. I give them credit for making an effort after 2019 to try to go for it. But 4 years later they decided to do the opposite. They had one foot out the door and clearly had no interest in building on the moderate success of 2023. And they proceeded to do nothing at the trade deadline. Tigers didn't have that attitude re: Baez, and they have the best record in the AL to show for it. I'm not in the business of lying to myself. Especially when that makes the organization worse.

    Exactly. No one wants status quo. Many people want to sell fairly aggressively. Not as agrresively as myself but more than just sending away Bader and Coulombe. This roster that's won precisely half of their games while playing in the worst division of baseball the last 18 months? This great window that is wasting the miraculous health and production of Buxton, still showing themselves to be nothing more than fine? Gee, I don't know. Fans shouldn't be satisfied with a front office that strives for 84 wins and a crossing of fingers that that's good enough to lose in the first round of the playoffs. This roster, at its best, appears to be even less than that. Contrary to what many fans will claim, this team has been pretty healthy over the last few seasons relative to other teams. It's not bad luck that's shown their mediocrity.

    How would it be in conflict with the message they've been sending the fans for the past 18 months? There's a reason their attendance is their worst since 2000. As for the players...I don't care if someone conveys to them they aren't good enough, because they've proven it.

    Because he sucks against them and he offers no secondary value. If he weren't a lousy fielder or baserunner he would have received more opportunities. That's precisely why Kepler was allowed despite only being marginally better against them. I don't know why you keep insisting on making the Twins offense AND defense actively worse by demanding they let their bad lefties face LHP man. Larnach isn't becoming Barry Bonds if he was allowed to fail for 500 PAs against LHP instead of merely failing for 250. And your constant excuses for his failures are so exhausting. The responsibility eventually falls on the player. 250 plate appearances, a near half seasons worth, and he's proven to be unplayable. How much more rope is he supposed to give him until we can finally say, oh, maybe it isn't such a bad idea to get a defensive upgrade against LHP that may or may not even hit better than him?

    Stearns doesn't seem like he's the type that will have the Mets overpaying for RP, or pitching period. I can see him offering a boatload for Buxton though.

    Many, myself included, don't think they can win 90+ in 2026 and are completely over this strategy of shooting for 84 wins and hoping it's good enough to lose in the first round of the playoffs.

    What? No, they haven't. The Twins the last two seasons have been a pretty darn healthy team compared to the rest of the league. I encourage you to look at the injuries for any other team at random. I wish fans would quit complaining about injuries like this. It's only second to fans excusing poor attendance by saying Minnesotans are unique and like to go to the lake house on the weekend.

    It's both lazy and often wrong. Someone else on this site used AI to try to convey their arguments and the data was just plain ****. Not to mention AI is just an extension of the flawed people that create and train it, yet again proven by the nazi Elon Musk's AI turning into a nazi that calls itself MechaHitler.

    What if you're passing up on the chance of him being Michael King? He struggled as a starter right away and was then relegated to the pen until he proved he had grown as a pitcher and was given another chance as a starter and has flourished. Bubic, moreso due to rehab was put into the bullpen last season but was given another chance to win a spot in the rotation and has done extremely well. The Twins haven't provided that sort of chance despite Jax saying he wanted to try to start again.

    Uh...there's been quite a few over the last 3 seasons. This is becoming a fairly common practice now, due to the low risk and high reward. 3 of those converted relievers to starters earned CY votes last season - Lugo, Lopez, and King.

    Man, he's struggled since he was sent back down. Not really a shocker, but in 139 PAs he's had an OPS of 0.638. Yikes!

    I was right there with you. It was dumb for the Twins not even considering it. We were definitely in the minority on this site though. And I agree that it would be incredibly dumb to attempt it midseason. He should be traded if we're being honest, but I can understand how many would prefer to keep one of Jax or Duran.

    This is more like someone's been a pretty decent cook, but shown in 254 attempts to be a pretty lousy baker. Keep throwing him out there, I don't care because this season is lost, but let's not pretend as if Larnach isn't also to blame.

    He didn't last season, so I don't know why we'd expect him to this season. There's a reason he was below replacement level last year. But I do wish to see him playing because I think this season is lost and next should be a punt (maybe something good happens!). But I have zero faith in Austin Martin being a competent outfielder and thus a decent big leaguer. I highly doubt any contender wants to roster either of these guys.

    Here's hoping he miraculously learned how to play a competent OF. Sorry to Austin, but I am such a hater. He's older than Julien yet for some reason a lot of people here are hopeful he can learn a new trick while happily giving up on Julien (which I'm also ok with). He's also somehow older than Aaron Sabato. Go figure.
