1. Not to nitpick but any contract signed by a player for above the minimum is a risk. Are the Twins getting their 7 mill worth out of Willingham this year?, whatever out of Doumit? They were not Ryan's contracts but a win on Mauer thusfar, a loss for Morneau. Risks in signing players long term. Burton gets extended. He can only pitch about 3 times a week. There is risk in signing a pitcher like that. You probably were trying to say once again that he does not sign FA to four year contracts while ignoring the trend of GM's to avoid those types of contracts. Only 5 or so are given out per year lately.
2. Brock may think you are kidding, I doubt it. 32 thousand gun deaths in 2011. Yeah right, 16000 people wre doing somethig pretty stupid. Lastyear thev4000 pedistrians were probably doing something stupid in your book when they were hit.
3. The interesting delema for the sellers is what to sell. You really can't sell of what you hope to build around unless you are wanting to start all over again. How many years have the Cubs wanted to get rid of the Soriano contract? Is Miami going to try to build around Stanton? How many of the older players do the White Sox get rid of? What can they bring in return. Isn't it about the same team that stayed near Detroit last year? Change of scenery do some of them good? The spare parts from most of the team will not help win a championship. Fading players are available. The buyer will hope the chase for a champion will elevate the older player's game.
4. So the number 9 prospect in the International League last year by Baseball America is considered a suspect and not a prospect. Those people at Baseball America>>>>>>>>>>>>
5. what is your criteria to judge. Santan, Mauer and Morneau all did pretty good under Gardy
6. I probably should have phrased it improved as a pitcher your examples of players improving is quite small. Marquis pitched all of 7 games after missing a portion of spring training. Never had a chance to improve his bad start with the Twins. Dickey was a work in progress and still took a few years to develop. Slowey had a great start in a new league and then where did his numbers go? Guerrier was designated for assignment last month. K rate improved, pitching suffered. Lohse and Garza should not have been traded for what they got in return. Pelfrey as he comes off injury has an improving k/9 rate. Correia it could be argued is pitching better than average for his normal stats. Worley was told to get the ball down lower in the strike zone. He is hopefully working on that. His ball appeared to be more up this year. All suffer from the dreaded SSS in terms of is there really a difference.
7. Did any pitcher leaving the Twins become better at striking people out? Anderson would be blamable for poor pitchingif there were good examples of that happening.
8. The players who have played baseball for all of their have not figured out the fundamentals by the time they reach the majors it is not the major leaugue managers fault. Throw out the whole system if you want to use lack of fundamentals as your excuse. Players not playing up to their potential as an excuse? Where were the accolades then for Gardenhire that Willngham had a career year? Players tuning him out as an excuse? Find me a quote. This is by no means support of Gardenhire, the excuses are seeming lame. Yes managers get fired after multiple losing seasons. The quote from the GM usually goes something like "Well, you can't fire all of the players"
9. There would have been someone like Gomes available if an outfielder was needed. Ryan gave a non answer to the question. It is a skill that he has. It is almost like why bother with an interview because he won't explain much.
10. Coulda woulda shoulda. Saunders and Marcum are not having good seasons. If Ryan signed them there would be people complaing that Ryan can't judge talent.
11. Think for a minute. Ryan traded Span and Reveere for what he thought was good value. If there was a good offer Willingham would have been traded. The fans will never know because Ryan rarely leaks what he wanted in trade. I think the Span for Storen was to set the value for future trades.
12. There must be a couple of players the Dodgers want. They took on salary to get the some of the Cub's international signing money.
13. The reportsMRI was negative. Do you have some inside information or just having pessimism? Proven innings eater was out two months. I guess that is the qualification you are calling innings eater. Below average era for the NL to boot.
14. Do you really think that would have been possible. Any dimwit agent would have his client test the market before signing a lowball contract. Liriano had a $12 million contract until he broke his arm.
15. From your article wwas the following table. nine years:
YearPitcher SO/PA BABIP 2010 Jon Lester 26.1% .291 2009 Tim Lincecum 28.8% .288 2008 Tim Lincecum 28.6% .310 2007 Erik Bedard 30.2% .284 2006 Johan Santana 26.5% .271 2005 Mark Prior 26.8% .281 2004 Randy Johnson 30.1% .267 2003 Kerry Wood 30.0% .275 2002 Randy Johnson 32.3% .291
League average BABIP over that time appears to be somewhat near .290. I would ask what the correlation coeeficient between BABIP and SO/PA before I got too excited about it. If you only look at two numers you are not going to get a clear picture. Would you want a pitcher who stuck out 16.5% of the batters he faced and a career average BABIP against of .281?
16. Can a sub 500 team really be considered a buyer? It would be pointless to add an expiring contract. It would be wise if there was a talent out there the other team did not want to pay for to go get it.
17. Drjim and Leviathan must have not seen this comment
18. Fact: Valencia 935 OPS Willingham 753. Valencia does not have enough AB to qualify to be on a leader board. Nor is he in the lineup 1/2 the time. To use Valencia as a reason to trade for Willingham is ignoring facts. Ignore that Willingham is in the bottom half in wOBA for LF, about 75th in baseball overall of qualified plate appearance. Bring all players with 50 plate appearances (Valancia's total and there are 126 better players than Willingham. All facts as you would like to call them. Yes I went from decent to great on describing the prospect. You are trading away someone you expect to be a productive starter (5th best wOBA if he were a DH, even if he is in a down year) for the next year and a half. Wouldn't you expect to get someone who could develop into a productive player for a year and a half. To get anything less than that as a prospect would mean that you are salary dumping
19. Ryan did not have to see him play to move him from GCL to Elizabethton last year. Where does it say every promotion needs to be eyeballed by the GM?
20. And people make mountains out of a grain of sand in an effort to say someone should be fired.
21. You said the yneed to bundle a decent prospect then mention Turpin and Pugh. Serious here? You think a GM could be fooled into thinking they are getting a gem here? Why not try convincing them with the right coach Cole DeVries could be their ace because he does not give up many runs when the ball is not hit 400 or more feet.
22. More than one statistic would be beneficial when assessing a pitcher. The idea generally is to miss a bat. Looking at swing percent of balls out of the strike zone and walks given up would give one an idea of how well a pitcher can fool a batter. Looking at what the batter swings and misses at in terms of percent and number of pitches thrown would give you an idea. Actually scouting and seeing how many mistake pitches are made and hammered would be important. The notion that one number is going to tell you what pitcher is better than another is myopic at best.
23. Yep Terry Ryan is a 2 time executive of the year. He must have done something right. Nobody has accused him of charming his way to the award. Those people at SI. It is not Sports Illustrated, it is Such Idiots.
