Article: Trending (4/7): Too Early To Trend
Old Twins Cap replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Twins need to play better. Then again, after sweeping all 7 games against the Birds last year, including four in a row in a miracle series when the Twins were all but given up for dead, can you really expect them to win game after game in Baltimore? Escobar. That's my trend. -
Article: Calling It: Miguel Sano Will Be AL MVP
Old Twins Cap replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Like the moxie of this prediction, but sincerely doubt MS ever gets there, as excellent as he is at the plate. And I hope I am wrong. -
Article: Trending (3/24): Roster Battles
Old Twins Cap replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I haven't seen much discussion about the outfield in the context of who will replace Miguel Sano in the late innings. That's a pretty regular gig in my book, if the Twins are winning. Santana is not a natural RF, but has speed and a good arm. He can learn to do it, but it's not like he is playing much RF at this point. Arcia is a possible late-inning replacement as well, but, let's face it, a year ago we were figuring who would play defense for him in the late innings. Best candidate would have been: Aaron Hicks, now a starting OF with the NY Yankees. Kepler could be that guy, over time, but we want him to play baseball and not sit on the bench waiting for Sano to come off the field. So, it's an issue in my opinion. Twins will figure it out, maybe Maestro makes it after all, but for now, must be Santana, an unnatural corner guy if ever there was one.- 42 replies

Article: Twins Banking On Murphy's Growth
Old Twins Cap replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
KC has Salvy Perez. St. Louis Yadier Molina. SF Posey. There's different ways to win in MLB, but catching is the glue. Gotta hope this guy has room to grow. -
Article: Monday Camp Notes: Roster Battle Royale
Old Twins Cap replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
One outfielder has to come in for Sano late in games and play quality defense. I guess that means Danny, for now. Switchhitting is nice as well should the game go into extras. And, for that late game quality at bat.... I'm not sure who a guy like Quentin or Arcia is supposed to hit for. Buxton? Escobar? Suzuki? I don't see a lot of pinch-hitting against AL clubs. NL clubs, sure.- 24 replies

Article: Twins Appear To Be All In On Buxton
Old Twins Cap replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hey, either he can play baseball or he can't. Everyone who scouts professionally has said he can play. Really well. He can play defense, he can run, he can bunt. He also has a good eye , and in MiLB, at least, he can hit. Let him play. See what happens. And enjoy it. He's a man now, let's live with the results. -

Sorry, I was trying to navigate to a Twins blog site. My mistake. All the best to the Birds! Where is that Twins site again? -
For me it's about watching him take an AB, the swing he puts on the ball, the way he works a pitcher. I'm not looking at numbers, I am watching him and seeing a professional hitter. He looks good right now, that's all.

SSS but Sweeney looks like a professional hitter, patient, thorough, puts a good swing on the ball. I could see those ABs, late in the game, really paying dividends. You hate to ever give up on a Santana or an Arcia, especially if Arcia's power ever comes back, but, the Twins do have a surplus of young talent and they can't keep them all.

Article: Cardinals 5, Twins 3: Super Tuesday
Old Twins Cap replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hey, wake up. If Nolasco pitches well, it's YUGE for the Twins. They got a contract with this guy. We bought stock in Nolasco. If that stock is valued, then its great for the Twins. End of story. What they do with that Nolasco stock is a different question. But for now, let us all kneel at night and ask God for one basic favor: please make Ricky Nolasco a highly effective and desirable pitcher so that we can off-load him for some decent AA reliever. Amen. -

Article: Is Eduardo Escobar For Real?
Old Twins Cap replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Recall that they tried EE in the outfield for a number of games -- he looked terrible out there, waiting to play the balls after they hit the ground or the wall. So, there's that in terms of super-utility. Compact body, compact swing, plenty of pop. Nothing flashy. We used to call that a ball-player when I was a kid. -
Ddi the Minnesota Twins Tank?
Old Twins Cap commented on Steven Buhr's blog entry in SD Buhr/Jim Crikket
The Twins tanked alright. They hired Bill Smith. -
Man, thanks for the history. I lived through it, all those names, dancing on the tables at Liquor Lyles in '87, won another series in '91. People forget, the Twins has a great regular season in '92, that was very fun season to be a Twins fan. Just didn't make it because of a great Toronto team which the Twins had surprised in '91. Knoblauch turned out to be a head case in the end, of course. (Read on the internet.) But, he was a key player in those early '90s teams and a good little hitter especially. These are like family trees, only made up of baseball players. Very fun to look back on.

Twins are not contenders in 2016, unless they prove they are on the field. I would not make any of these moves now. Wait until the season is two months in, see what you got, try some of the kids in MiLB, especially in the bullpen, add, subtract, deal with injuries and positional depth. Make any changes in June or July. Yeah, I know, maybe June or July the Twins are out of it. But, you know what, if that's true, they were never contenders to begin with. In MLB, you don't win on paper, or in projections, or in theory. You win it on grass. And when you sense you have a chance, you build in what you need through trades.

Article: The Offseason Of Trevor Plouffe
Old Twins Cap replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This idea that somehow GMs play a multi-level chess match through the press, pretending to move players to the outfield when they are really just trying to increase the trade potential for an infielder -- that's just crazy online thinking. GMs don't casually jerk players around. They don't make fake moves hoping some other GM will give them more for a league-average player. No team is going to give more or less for a player based on the other team's situation. GMs job is to put together his team. They are judged on how their team performs. If they make a move, they better get quality back. It's straight forward. Plouffe stays. He's a piece of the puzzle. The Twins have pieces they can field a team with, trade from, and replace injuries with. For once. -
Article: Max Power: Assessing Kepler's Timeline
Old Twins Cap replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm not an expert on GMs and what they look at, but Plouffe is going to Arb this week and will likely settle with the Twins at @7M. I'm not sure, if you are the GM, you trade for Plouffe until after his contract is settled. After this week, it will be. Who wants him? Sure, he's injury protection for the Twins lineup, a nice luxury to have. But, he's also a league average player at a position the Twins have a potential game changing all-star. So, lots of cringing to this point that the Twins haven't made a move, but maybe you don't make a move like this until after the Arb contract is settled. -
Article: Twins Winter League Update
Old Twins Cap replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
For the record, everyone coming to the Twins camp is in "the best shape of their career", whether ripped, jacked, humbled or swollen. That's the way spring goes: optimism, hope, glory and gumption. Gotta love it. And take it with a mountain sized grain of salt.- 26 replies

Article: MLB's Youth Movement
Old Twins Cap replied to Teflon's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
One thing for sure: the young players are playing a lot more baseball at a young age than in the '70s,'80s and 90s. Every level of baseball, youth leagues, development leagues, extended Spring training, -- in the US, in Latin America, in Asia. Kids are coming to Professional Baseball having so many more games under their belt. Video, coaching, weight lifting, endless training, year around camps -- the real issue, IMO, is that single sport athletes are focusing in and developing skills in young people, quicker -- there is a tremendous incentive to get really good, really young. There are millions of dollars on the table if you can be really good at a young age, the market is driving this on several levels. -

Sounds to me like the usual off-season debates and contests for positions. This is MLB. Even the Royals have their off-season question marks. There will be more: injuries, slow starts, clubhouse chemistry issues. What do you want? A completely decided upon roster and lineup on December 6th prior to Spring Training? This is the fun part, the hot stove cooking, the intrigue that makes a season something special.

Twins First Winter Meetings Trade
Old Twins Cap commented on jorgenswest's blog entry in Blog jorgenswest
On the radio, the announcers gushed about the "dangerous" Cesar Tovar for the Twins. All he did was win games. He could hit, hit for power, run, steal bases, catch the ball in the outfield -- Tovar is one of my fondest memories of what the Twins stood for. And his "elbows first" batting style was one I imitated in the sandlots for a decade. God Bless Pepe! -
Article: Twins Have Deal With Byung Ho Park
Old Twins Cap replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks. I don't see anything terribly risky in his name, but, then I am not a moderator at this blog site. I was once cited for calling a Twins decision "stupid" so I don't know what level of paranoia grips the powers that be. May "Pak" hit a thousand long flies into the dying embers of night at Target Field.
