  1. Yeah, I may have wanted Rasmus at the money he got, but I definitely would have been psyched had that Aoki deal been with the Twins instead. 2nd year is even an option, if I remember correctly, so the team is locked into even less of a commitment.
  2. This is the first list I've seen (for this year) with Berrios behind Meyer or Stewart. Did BP give any detail on that?
  3. Speculation: The reports on Molitor pushing for a reunion with Hunter don't include that Molitor's offer was to be more a veteran bench player and part-time starter than a full-time outfielder; Hunter went looking for a team that would offer him regular starts and either found TEX, SEA and BAL willing to do so, or found no offers of a starting role and started to prioritize a contending team at that point. Torii's known for spreading good will everywhere he goes, isn't he...
  4. I read this post the other day quoting Shane Victorino saying he expects to be starting in the OF for the Red Sox even after the Ramirez and Sandoval signings. The Sox are in a position where most likely they'll either move Hanley to the outfield or look to trade Bogaerts for a pitcher. Assuming it's the first option, they'll have to trade an outfielder. Victorino has some health issues (his back, I think), and I'm not sure what the timeline for his recovery is. That should be a concern, but if healthy he seems to make all kinds of sense for the Twins - good defender in the outfield corners, right-handed bat that can play at the top of the lineup.
  5. I've always had a hard time getting the meaningful information out of the defensive stats at baseball-reference, but perhaps someone could interpret that. Is this perception of Hunter's D as better than those two based in fact?
  6. Not sure where this idea that the Mets were a 66-win team came from, but it seems to be spreading now. The Mets finished 2 games under .500 last year. I think the Cuddyer deal is dumb, but it's not hard to imagine their front office thinking they'll sniff contention again soon.
  7. As a MN-native New Yorker who tries to keep up some semblance of allegiance to the Mets as well as the Twins, I find this disappointing. And... yeah. Three years older and more injury-prone, he's getting the same annual value he got on the Rockies deal.
  8. Rick Renteria might be a good candidate for the coaching staff now that he's officially unemployed.
  9. Markakis, Rasmus and possibly Aoki are free agent OFs I'd hope the Twins would look at. A little leery of Aoki since he was lifted for defensive replacements so much in the playoffs, but supposedly his longer track record on defense is OK.
  10. My next thought on hearing the Maddon-Rays news, after the first thought of "obviously! go get him!", was that if Friedman's departure prompted Maddon to opt out of his contract, would he really want to go work for Ryan, not nearly as analytical a GM by reputation and perhaps a less savvy one overall? Apparently, Maddon's opt-out was only triggered when Friedman left the Rays organization, but Maddon claims he "didn't even know" of the clause in his contract. I'm skeptical, but it does seem like the emerging story is about Maddon deciding to explore his options because he could, perhaps follow the money elsewhere once the Rays org went into flux, and less about choosing to leave the Rays because Friedman was gone. That's the only interpretation that gives me hope that Maddon could be interested in the Twins job.
  11. In theory, variety of handed-ness would be a factor in choosing between pitchers of similar overall ability. In practice, a team rarely has unlimited options and a pitcher's ability is much more important than which arm he throws with. Also, the Twins play half their games in a park that plays much better for right-handed power than left-handed power. That may make the presence of a LH starter even less important.
  12. DJL44, on 12 Sept 2014 - 10:25 AM, said: Handedness doesn't matter at all if the pitcher is effective. Exactly.
  13. Is it really the smart move to trade Nolasco this offseason? I think they might have gotten more for him at the deadline, when a pitching-hungry team would have seen any veteran with a halfway decent track record as an upgrade, than in the offseason when he'll be judged for the generally crappy full season he's had. Who knows what Ryan can pull off but I kind of think the Twins would be better off waiting at least through part of next season and seeing if Nolasco builds his value back up either to trade partners or to them. The Twins are stuck paying for him, but I bet they don't treat him as stuck in the rotation. He has one more year on his contract and I think they can stomach having him around as an expensive reliever or AAA starter.
  14. Getting Adam as the trade return at first glance looks a bit like getting Gilmartin for Doumit last offseason. A pitching prospect who's fallen off the map a bit and could be tweaked or coached back closer to his upside. Since Gilmartin is doing decently this year I'm interested to see the results of this one too.
  15. This is probably a little too crazy ever to become reality, but what about Nolasco for Ethier or Kemp? Both sides take on a bad contract so it's a little more palatable for each (maybe a prospect or cash goes in the deal to even it out); Dodgers were rumored to be looking for a rotation patch; each team addresses an area of relative need; and Nolasco has pitched well in LA before.
  16. I didn't know until yesterday about that unusual clause in Lackey's contract that triggered an extra year on his deal for $500,000 because he had Tommy John surgery. Gotta say, I'm kind of stumped that the Red Sox traded him, considering that they seem as likely to reload for next year as to rebuild from the ground.
  17. Does anyone more wonky than me about stats, pitch-fx, etc. have any insight on this? Gibson's minor league K rates were between 7.5 and 10.5 per 9 (the latter inflated by pitching beneath his level on a rehab assignment, but still.) Based on that you wouldn't expect him to be especially bad at missing bats, but are there mechanical factors or other factors we don't see?
  18. Apologies if this is a redundant post since I didn't read through the entire middle of this thread, but on the new site just as on the old I'm getting some of the sidebar ads automatically playing sound, either little split-second chunks or full extended sections. Kind of a nuisance at any time and especially not good for anyone reading the site at work (not that I'd ever do that...)
  19. MLBTradeRumors reports that Suzuki's agents are seeking an extension in line with Ruiz' and Saltalamacchia's free-agent contracts. Yikes. Avoid.
  20. They can extend him in mid-season. Or they can get the ball rolling with him and his agent on a new contract to be signed after the season. Suzuki's making like $3M this year, and even with a good season he's not going to have the illusion that he should make $15M per year in his next contract, so I really doubt that there's any hardball to be played with the qualifying offer.
  21. This is not to take anything away from your overall take which is an interesting one, but two-way players headed into the draft tell teams scouting them their positional preference all the time. I think there's nothing below the surface there.
  22. If I remember right, part of the line on Suzuki was that overuse at the catcher position was a likely reason that his performance declined after a strong few years earlier in his career. I'm fine with re-signing him if he stays productive, and I think re-signing him after he makes good on a one-year deal fits the Twins' tendencies, but let's be ready for some decline in his health and/or hitting if he stays a full-time starter. I'd rather see Pinto earn back some organization trust as a catcher and Suzuki slide into a part-time role.
  23. Does the tuition money mentioned above pay for Gordon to attend school in the offseason or does it go to a fund for him to go back to school after (or later in) his playing career?
  24. Honorable mentions have to go to Kirvin Moesquit, Jarrard Poteete and Mat Batts.
  25. It's not just that the organization has this tendency. Beyond the reasons spelled out in responses above, players across the sport also simply move off SS regularly. Does moving off the premium position of SS exist as a risk with Gordon? Of course, but I don't think any of the players you list came into the organization with the high ratings for their defense that Gordon currently gets.
