  1. 1 more base runner and it is a save situation. Probably should have optioned O'Rourke a couple weeks ago for a player we would actually use.
  2. Someone will need to be removed from the 40-man for Fryer too.
  3. Boston can certainly afford to sign a more established arm, but Dombrowski's record isn't limited to that. He acquired Scherzer when he was inexperienced too. But yeah, trading an asset like Swihart when you have Boston's resources seems unlikely.
  4. Yeah, I could see it being unlikely (especially from Boston's perspective), but I can't see it as a definite NO from the Twins side either.
  5. Why Santana on Sep. 1? There is no way he starts up here while Escobar is healthy. I guess pinch running? I'd rather have him keep swinging a bat for another week in AAA in case Escobar got hurt. Also, you don't think Berrios will get any kind of look? I'd like to see a pitcher capable of long relief on Sep. 1, preferably Berrios but Darnell would be in that group too. No sense going another week without a long reliever despite expanded rosters in a pennant race, short starts absolutely destroy our pen right now.
  6. Swihart is not just some random young catcher. He was a top 20 prospect coming into 2015, probably equal to Berrios rank right now, and his bat is starting to come alive in his rookie season. If you have two equivalently ranked prospects, trading the pitcher for the position player is probably a net positive quite often. Not saying it would be here, I haven't really seen either player, but you'd have to at least consider it strongly.
  7. We all like performance, but I don't like to bank on 10 starts worth of mostly singles from a guy with Robinson's track record when making playing time decisions in a pennant race. He's a fine 5th outfielder. But that shouldn't mean 3 starts a week (Hunter's caddy lately). Buxton can be the 4th outfielder / Hunter's caddy. If his bat comes around, he's got a much better chance of sustaining an .830 OPS and being a postseason asset.
  8. I used to be critical of the wave when the home team is batting, still a little critical when it's a close game (not sure 3 runs in the 9th counts). But with a 3 year old, it is another thing to interest her and extend her time at the ballpark. I support it. Also, unlike a lot of other annoying things at sporting events, you can't really replicate the wave anywhere else. It's a whole ton of people, sitting captive, in a circle formation. If that crowd wants to take some communal action for fun, go for it. For those that don't participate, its direct effects (blocking one's view) are very brief by definition, and given the pace of the sport, unlikely to obscure much action.
  9. That's 10 starts. And anytime your description of a player encouragingly notes 3 doubles in nearly a month, that is probably not a player you want to roll the dice on in a pennant race if you can help it.
  10. Given his performance, I think the complaints will be muted as long as Robinson isn't starting over him, and as long as Hunter doesn't continue his hitting slide.
  11. It's not much of a dilemma. He can develop fine taking Robinson's starts, plus a few more if Hunter's bat doesn't heat up. He can also see action from the bench through aggressive pinch running and defensive substitutions.
  12. Berrios is still listed as the Red Wings starter for tomorrow (Monday Aug. 31) which is a shame, because if he is on any kind of innings limit, it's a waste to use them at AAA that close to roster expansion.
  13. The Red Wings are 5 games out with 9 to play. I sure hope they are not waiting for the end of that season to call up players, especially given our bullpen (no long relievers right now) and bench (no pinch hitters).
  14. FYI, Buxton uses "Flashlight" by Parliament for his walk-up music. Might be the best walk-up song in our current lineup.
  15. And this is where discussing service time seems kinda silly. It is almost certainly the least of the Twins concerns about Arcia right now.
  16. No. He could have perhaps qualified for Super 2 if he had a full MLB season this year, but that was out the window after 20 days or so in the minors. Arcia can't be sent to minors again next year (out of options) unless he clears waivers.
  17. You are probably right, but Swarzak was cut before his 2nd Arab award last winter. Fien probably gets the Duensing treatment but his precipitous dropoff in K rate 2 years in a row has to be concerning.
  18. Re: 40-man, if Nolasco and Pressly don't come back this season, they can take the spots of free agents (Pelf, Torii, Boyer, Duensing, Cotts). Nunez and Robinson might get non tendered. Thompson and Wheeler are two guys who could be dropped today. Darnell doesn't appear to be in our plans either.
  19. To be fair, I read the Perkins comment as more of a criticism of his extension, which may still end badly. His original contract ran through 2016 (team option).
  20. To be fair, most folks weren't pro-Drew but rather anti-Florimon, which was correct. And Drew was shipped out during the season just the same as Kendrys Morales, so he wouldn't have blocked anybody for too long. Maybe Escobar would have seen more corner OF time in place of, say, Parmelee.
  21. Considering your argument is that service time for a young pitcher is vitally important, you might want to shelve the argument until you have time to do more research to actually support it. Otherwise, the evidence I've seen, about Rays pitchers, Cardinals, Mets, etc., suggest it's not nearly as important for pitchers as position players.
  22. You said our GM invested significant money in short term immediate fixes while rebuilding, unlike Houston.
  23. TR hiring assassins to take out opposing players would also have the same "underlying logic."
  24. Sure, if the Twins decide that it's important, I'd be fine with keeping Berrios down a bit longer next season. You generally don't see such service-time shenanigans with pitchers, though, because their future value is much more speculative than position players. Still waiting for someone to come up with any Berrios comparables (in terms of talent, health, and experience) that were subjected to such service time games.
  25. Yes. As much as "everyone's a contender" early in the season, it's also fair to say "no one is a contender" yet either. The calculus should be very different when you're in a playoff spot only a month away from the finish line.
