  1. I guess the other variable is parking. Sunday 5 PM game, toddler, infant, and grandma in tow, so closer is better and money is no object. Any tips?
  2. I like to move around too, although I will be with the family this time. My daughter liked the contests and games they used to do above the visitor's dugout at Midway, so I just got those same seats at CHS -- will report back.
  3. Thinking of going to my first game at CHS Field. Any recommendations on where to sit? I know at Midway, we loved being right above the visitor's dugout where the PA announcer was. Is there any preferred spot around the infield at CHS like that?
  4. Has the league become more imbalanced recently? Those are some crazy records for St Paul and Sioux City.
  5. Rosario should have just done a "self high-five", to save face.
  6. Don't think we can worry much about setting up for the postseason yet.
  7. Thanks for the updated info!
  8. Turner or any non-40 man guy would be "eligible", but would still require permission from the league. And AFAIK, it hasn't really happened at this late date since KRod in 2002, so it might be something the league discourages now (since that time, they have really made postseason rosters much more flexible in terms of the 40-man roster -- the August 31st 25-man is basically irrelevant now, but was the tougher standard that K Rod had to crack in 2002).
  9. Brock, could you link to your source document? I'd like to peruse it too...
  10. I know Berardino reported earlier that Santana would be ineligible for any game 163 tiebreakers too. Did that get corrected? I think it makes sense -- MLB doesn't want to confer an advantage to any suspended player over another suspended player, in terms of availability beyond the scheduled 162 game season, based on the timing of their suspension.
  11. To be fair, the Free Press report is just that Ausmus will be let go after the season, which isn't all that surprising. The Gardenhire part is just a columnist's speculation about potential replacements. Although Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweeted that Garderhire is the heavy favorite: https://twitter.com/BNightengale/status/642332674967793665 A little different than the original report here that Gardy was "all but a done deal". I'd be really surprised if they were that close to finalizing Ausmus' replacement with almost a month to go in the season, unless Gardy was an in-house candidate which he is not. There are a lot of moving parts (like coaching staff) and who knows what other candidates might become available after the season.
  12. Tell me what better FA options will be available for $45 mil (Shields' remaining guarantee less Nolasco's)?
  13. They still have Wil Myers and Matt Kemp. I wouldn't count on them putting Myers back in CF if Justin Upton leaves.
  14. Why exactly do the Padres need to "get out of James Shields's contract a few years early" as you say? It only lasts 3 more years guaranteed, so swapping him for 2 years of a lesser (albeit less expensive) pitcher in Nolasco is hardly a clear plus for them. (Shields also has an opt-out after 2016, and while it's unlikely he would exercise it at his age, it's not inconceivable if he stays durable and productive next year, especially if SD doesn't improve.) Your follow-up comment that "James Shields is one of the best starting pitchers in baseball" only confuses the issue more. Additionally, the Padres have zero room for Arcia on their MLB roster, and he's out of options next spring. I mean, the Padres might take a flier on him if he's essentially free, but you can probably leave him off this trade proposal, he's not really adding value.
  15. I wasn't sure if it would be a parody of "Let It Go" from Frozen, or "Let It Snow". For those wondering, it is the latter. I don't think we'd want to hear Judd & Mackey try to belt out "Let It Go." (Yes, I have two young daughters )
  16. Huh? Comparable ages? Pino was 3-4 year older at the same levels, and had a notably worse K rate (and probably other stats too) despite pitching some out of the bullpen. No eerie similarity here at all.
  17. Likewise, Berrios' K rate dropped in his first taste of AA, which is why I suspect Gonsalves could start out at high-A next year again.
  18. I think the original report comes from a blog called "Detroit Sports Rag": http://detroitsportsrag.net/ron-gardenhire-will-be-the-next-tigers-manager/ Kind of a strange site, I wouldn't be surprised if this was an inaccurate report. Seems kind of early to commit to Gardenhire, when they are letting Ausmus finish the year and there's almost a month left.
  19. Yup. It would have been one thing to not like Garza, view him as expendable, etc., and swap him for Young. I didn't necessarily like Young, but it's an aggressive move for a recently well-regarded prospect yadda yadda yadda. But we had to give up a lot more (a controlled starting SS) for that privilege! And once we gave up Bartlett, it forced us to bet on Adam Everett not being toast (we lost on that one) and eventually had to give up a recent 2nd rounder (Ladendorf) to patch the position with Cabrera, then a still-young Gomez for Hardy, then even perhaps forcing a sketchy international move in Nishioka and a not-implausible draft-for-need in Levi Michael... arg, why do people keep bringing this stuff up?
  20. Yeah, my "naive" comment wasn't really directed at the Sano signing. But most of his MLB moves looked pretty naive -- swapping Hardy for Nishioka (and perhaps Hoey for Crain/Guerrier), Capps for Nathan, Young for Hunter, etc. Lots of times he gave up real value to get a worse player on the team than the guy he was ostensibly replacing. Even if most of these ideas didn't originate with him, if he was letting Gardy, Antony, and others dictate nonsensical roster moves, that's a naive way to GM. The international amateurs he signed obviously didn't cost much of anything or get swapped for anyone, so they were fine moves.
  21. Seth, it has been reported recently that Vielma would be eligible for Rule 5. Both he and Valera signed in September 2011, so although they didn't debut until 2012, I think this would be their 5th Rule 5 draft upcoming.
  22. No, I don't think so. I think you can get an extra option year on a player who was injured or in short-season ball for awhile, but I've never seen that applied to Rule 5 protection. In fact, it seems players missing major time to injury are popular Rule 5 picks.
  23. The trend in these numbers may be different than what you claim, though. Could be that other changes are lowering the number of 21 year old starters on the cusp on MLB like Berrios, not necessarily that MLB teams are holding back those few 21 year old starters who reach that point. Drafting, low minors development, earlier TJ surgery, etc. You'd really have to look at minor league numbers and prospect lists to get a better idea. If I get time, I'll try.
