  1. Pinto has never been outrighted before, so he can't refuse it.
  2. The Rays and Royals have both exceeded their international spending caps recently. Somehow the Twins haven't, apparently, despite spending virtually 100% of their pool on one guy...
  3. All of these stats are collected in one page at MLB.com too: http://mlb.mlb.com/milb/stats/org.jsp?id=min
  4. I think that will be close, but it might be hard to send Duffey to AAA. Also, although Tonkin is out of options, I don't think his spot is guaranteed.
  5. Not only is the sample small, he was basically a rookie -- you'd expect he would perform better in the second half.
  6. Do the recently released players still get to keep their gift subscriptions to the jelly-of-the-month club?
  7. A triple pitching change! Best of both worlds!
  8. Urias to MLB at age 19 would be fun too!
  9. Not to that degree: http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/split.cgi?t=p&lg=AL&year=2015#times Although that is a small sample, and there is still plenty of time for May to improve upon it too (maybe rookies do worse in this split?).
  10. There is virtually no technically correct usage of the term for baseball player contracts then, unless the player dies while under contract. Wow, it appears I'm not even in the top two nitpickers on this site anymore! Not sure whether I should be relieved or worried...
  11. Nolasco missed almost the whole season (basically 5 of 6 months), and another starter (Santana) missed half the season (the same half that May started). Within the context of one season, I'd say at least the former if not also the latter classify as catastrophic (although some of us welcomed the respite from Nolasco).
  12. I love your optimism, but basically every guy we've signed to a similar deal in the past 5 years has made the team. Remember Sean Burroughs? I would guess that it will be virtually impossible for Abad to pitch his way out of that in his ~10 spring training innings.
  13. Please let's not make this into an abstract technical discussion of "sunk costs", I think we all know what the poster meant in baseball terms.
  14. This is incorrect. Nolasco can refuse the assignment and keep his salary too, which he almost assuredly would do. The Twins would then have to release him to clear the roster spot, like the Cubs eventually did with Edwin Jackson. Otherwise, you would see lots of underperforming veterans on big contracts outrighted to AAA, as the player would have virtually no financial choice in the matter. Rules here: http://www.thecubreporter.com/book/export/html/3531
  15. Difference from what? Kubel's minor league contract with MLB salary clause? Bartlett's? Recently Twins history suggests that Abad's salary and opening day roster spot is virtually guaranteed at this point, that's all I'm saying.
  16. There might be something to that, although the sample is still very small. Apart from hardly having a chance to fully "warm up" as a MLB SP so far, May has also been on a bit of a short leash as SP too, mostly for circumstances outside his control (MLB debut in 2014, then late spring start and some full season innings progression pacing in 2015).
  17. For the record, while I am one of the most vocal proponents of FA relievers around here, I don't have a big problem with May in the pen. (I am less enamored of Nolasco's potential return to the rotation.) My issue is I think the pen could use more immediate help than just May, 3 years and $20 mil is not that expensive even for the Twins, and not all reliever acquisitions this winter have involved commitments that high (Lowe, K-Rod, Benoit, etc.). It should also be noted that Jepsen is set to hit free agency next winter, and Fien is still year to year and might very well not be worth his arb award next winter. Even Perkins is only guaranteed salary through 2017, and those 3 guys represent the sum total of our future salary obligations in the bullpen. So there is still plenty of flexibility in our pen apart from May.
  18. Iwakuma NOT to the Dodgers, but back to Seattle: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/12/mariners-resign-hisashi-iwakuma.html I wonder if this pressures the Dodgers to get Jose Fernandez? That would be fun. I can't see them being terribly thrilled with any of the remaining FA SP (Chen, Leake, Gallardo, Kennedy, Kazmir). They could also take Shields contract if the Padres so desired (and the two teams traded last winter, despite being in the same division).
  19. Swarzak actually started the Twins 3rd game of the 2012 season, and stayed in the rotation for a couple more turns until a 2.2 IP, 3 HR, 6 run performance. After a month of long relief, he returned to take Jason Marquis' spot in the rotation again in late May, and gave up 6 runs on 9 hits in 3.2 IP. In spring training that year, he also had 2 starts and 15.1 IP in 6 games total, which was the 6th highest IP-to-G ratio on the staff (behind only starters Liriano, Pavano, Blackburn, Hendriks, and Marquis). http://cleveland.indians.mlb.com/stats/sortable.jsp?c_id=cle#playerType=ALL&elem=%5Bobject+Object%5D&tab_level=child&click_text=Sortable+Player+pitching&game_type='S'&season=2012&season_type=ANY&league_code='MLB'&sectionType=sp&statType=pitching&page=1&ts=1450459756475&team_id=142&sportCode='mlb'&split=&active_sw=&position=&page_type=SortablePlayer&sortOrder='desc'&sortColumn=ip&results=&perPage=50&timeframe=&last_x_days=&extended=0 So presumably he was in the running for a rotation spot throughout that time, had he been able to perform. I had forgotten he had some good starts in 2011, although he also had a few real clunkers too. He finished the year with 6 starts, and despite 4 of them being quality starts, he managed a 5.85 ERA and .323 BAA in that stretch. And of course, all of this was after his atrocious 6.21 ERA full season as a starter at AAA in 2010. Up through that point, he had been an exclusive starter as a pro.
  20. It's interesting that this feeling still persists among pitchers. I know relievers still don't make as much money as starters, but they're definitely way above bench players in the modern game, in terms of respect and value (and even salary). Heck, amateur teams have closers, etc., so it's weird to see some pitchers still resist the move. I guess it's another thing I won't understand about the pro athlete psyche.
  21. Since he is listed at 6'5", I think we'd all have to agree with this statement.
  22. The fact that Abad was expected by some observers to get a major league deal would support my point, no? His minor league contract with salary clause is likely a de facto major league deal that doesn't cost us a roster spot right now, a strategy the Twins have used numerous times over the past 5 years.
  23. Love the old clip of Kepler, I had never seen that before! That's a swing I can relate to...
  24. He's definitely more aggressive than he once was, although it has primarily been a reactive (and often late) aggressiveness. Our big FA SP signings, the Jepsen trade, even the recent Murphy acquisition, he was kinda forced into doing them after his conservative Plan A's blew up, sometimes spectacularly for a full season or longer. The Revere and Span trades remain one of his rare examples of proactive aggressiveness. As much as he's known as "Trader Terry", he really hasn't made that many unexpected trades (or free agent signings) of significance.
  25. For starts by position, check B-Ref's "Defensive Lineups" (under the "Other" tab) and look at the bottom of the DH column: http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIN/2015-lineups.shtml For stats by position (including all appearances at the position, not just starts), you can look under B-Ref's batting splits for the team, and clicking on a position brings up the player-by-player breakdown: http://www.baseball-reference.com/play-index/split_stats_team.cgi?full=1&params=defp%7Cas%20DH%7CMIN%7C2015%7Cbat%7CAB%7C Or at Fangraphs, select the position in the Splits drop-down menu: http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=0&season=2015&month=44&season1=2015&ind=0&team=8&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0
