  1. Speaking of Sandoval, here is a blurb which confirms what we've all said, that the releasing team is on the hook for the entire contract: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/07/red-sox-designate-pablo-sandoval-for-assignment.html
  2. Actually release waivers can be requested on an injured player anytime: http://www.thecubreporter.com/book/export/html/3534 Sandoval was DFA'd. And it's possible they may want to outright him to the minors (with his permission), which can't be done to an injured player.
  3. I believe you correct, Gee is still on the 40-man. Hughes going to the 60-day meant the likely DFA of Gee was unnecessary.
  4. The full sequence of moves: Hughes to 60-day DL Vargas optioned Breslow activated Colon added
  5. Well, who knows how Berrios would have done in a pen role at the end of 2015. Does Duffey's 2016 mean the Twins were wrong to promote him in 2015? Wouldn't have cost them anything to find out, really. And the point was, they said the same thing about not messing with his starting routine, etc. Doesn't seem to matter that he never had surgery.
  6. Do you have any example where that hasn't been the case? Or a news report that the rule has changed? I think the burden of proof is on you. You are the only one who is asserting something different from what is commonly understood. The rule you are suggesting doesn't even seem to make logical sense. Some team was mad that they released a guy and had to pay him to play elsewhere? So the league and players association allegedly agreed to punish players released in such a manner? Because putting a high price on tag on such players is a clear detriment to their future opportunities.
  7. No, it is fully guaranteed. The team that releases a veteran still owes him his full contract. If the Tigers released Zimmermann today, they would still pay him for the next 3 years, but another team could sign him right away and would not be responsible for anything over the minimum.
  8. I don't know if technically this should be called his first full season back after TJ. He had the surgery way back in June 2014. They already slow paced his recovery and conservatively held him back in 2016 (probably his real "first full season back"). At some point you can't lean on that excuse anymore. Manage his innings and expectations and I think you can do whatever you want with him this season.
  9. The Twins employed some of the same excuses for the perfectly healthy Berrios a couple years ago...
  10. Cahill and Feldman are cheap/good enough that they won't clear waivers in August. They should get dealt in July.
  11. It works, in the sense that it shows the amount of thanks that each particular member deserves.
  12. But at that point, most contenders will have satisfied their need for SP reinforcements. Particularly the ones that are aggressive enough to meet asking prices.
  13. FWIW, Zimmermann is a central Wisconsin native. The author still suggests the Tigers would want a "huge haul" of prospects to get Fulmer, even with Zimmermann included. I expect that would be the primary source of any sticking point, rather than the no-trade clause.
  14. He seems to be doing a Phil Hughes circa 2014 thing with his walks (or lack thereof). I doubt the Giants view him as a net negative. Sure, he's not an ace or even a #2 right now, but he's not bad. Matt Cain is bad. The Giants don't have enough good starters that they can dump someone like Samardzija, especially with the uncertainty around Cueto.
  15. I don't know. The more I look at this deal, I don't know how you say no to Thrylos's hypothetical, and probably even more. For all of his injuries, Doolittle has pitched the bulk of every season of the last 6 except one (2015), has been consistently good while doing it, and is controlled cheaply for potentially 3 more past this one. Honestly, he may have been the best relief target available -- good, controllable, with just enough surface issues to keep his asking price down (as compared to Hand). And after missing 3 years, Madson has been healthy for 3 years now, and is pitching about as well as he ever has. Controlled for 2018 at a reasonable sum too (7 mil). We only have 2 trusted guys in our current pen, which is bad enough going into a pennant race, but Kintzler is a pending FA and Rogers has a 6.7 K/9 (not to mention Kintzler's 5.4). I really don't see how the Twins could pass that up. Once again, it pays to be on Oakland's speed dial, I think.
  16. Maybe Ynoa or Graterol would be better matches for / could be an offer of Luzardo?
  17. Other than his half-season with the A's, he only spent 1 year in the AL. And that year (White Sox) his ERA+ was only 79 but his FIP- was basically league average at 102, which doesn't really fit the recent Gibson model. Good note on the contract being backloaded though. 5/90, but he only made $10.8 mil the first year, so he makes $19.8 this year and the following three.
  18. Treinen had a 2.28 ERA, 8.5 K/9, and 1.34 average game entering leverage index last year. Duffey is at 4.74 ERA, 8.7 K/9, and 1.25 leverage index this year. Duffey is younger and has a year less service time, but they're really not that far apart in usage or performance to date. The Twins don't really have a better comp, I don't think (Pressly has a year more service time than Treinen, and is perhaps a bit more conspicuously bad this year).
  19. Sorry, I didn't necessarily mean your proposal was giving him away. I was actually more responding to the other poster who thought it was too much.
  20. The Giants aren't really hurting for money, and they are going to need starters going forward too, so they don't necessarily have to give Samardzija away.
  21. I think Duffey was the approximate Treinen equivalent. Balzovic = Luzardo, Blakenhorn = Neuse.
  22. Radke's shoulder may have naturally healed over the last 10 years, right?
  23. It's Billings, in the Pioneer League. It's officially rookie league, so I am not sure why some are calling it "Class A" (and I am not blaming the poster here, I just read a news story which called it "Class A" too): http://www.daytondailynews.com/sports/reds-give-green-light-greene-heading-billings-today/paVOhl670qYfDjKELpEZNJ/ And that's from the Dayton, OH newspaper -- the home of the Reds' actual Class A affiliate. You would think they would be aware of the distinction! Cincinnati doesn't have a short-season A affiliate (B-Ref calls such teams "A-").
