  1. Pomeranz may turn out to be good, but mainly I am disappointed the Twins didn't make this trade happen. Would have been very optimistic at Anderson's upside.
  2. What is this "platoon" concept you speak of?
  3. I think a useful comp is the Gio trade last year...Nats traded four guys, none ranked in the BP top 100...Peacock, AJ Cole, Milone, and Norris. A package starting with Harrison and Baxendale (or maybe Berrios) isn't crazy, in my opinion.
  4. Not interested. He, unlike Anderson, would cost a king's ransom. Much rather try to sign Garza, trade for Anderson, or Bailey.
  5. I was thinking of Baxendale and Harrison as well. Willingham would be a good add, and you are right the Twins should cover some of his salary. That sounds like a great offer to me. Might be laughed at, since we undoubtedly view the Twins prospects too highly. Would also really hope for a 4/40 extension or something like that after 1 year.. longterm rotation of:Anderson, Meyer, Gibson, Nolasco and Hughes. Nice.
  6. While it appears that he wanted an NL team and the west coast, it also appears that the Twins weren't active in pursuit of him. Ryan said he liked him but that he wanted $10mm, and that wasn't going to happen. After hearing that, it seems like the Twins bowed out. Who knows if he would have considered Minnesota if they had made a run at him? I'm not too upset, but it seems strange that we hear "willing to consider any one-year expense" and yet the pitcher with the highest upside available...is too rich at $10mm?
  7. If the Twins manage to sign Garza and one of Kazmir/JJ/Arroyo/Nolasco (or even Hughes), I think that could have a pretty dramatic effect on their competitiveness.
  8. Right on! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?!?
  9. JB-Iowa....good post, and thank you for keeping it clean by asterisking the u in b*tts!
  10. I had to change from +12 to +1,213 because my message was 3 characters too short
  11. It actually make sense in terms of the Twins modus operandi. Wouldn't cost them a draft pick, and it wouldn't be spending huge free agent money on a stranger. Garza was traded away for (although it pains me to say) the top prospect in baseball. Getting him back in the organization when he becomes a free agent seems very plausible. Plus, he is the best arm available this winter! Would love to see it. (With JJohnson or Hughes as the second piece...)
  12. I would rather the Twins use the relationship with the agent to sign Josh Johnson to a deal that includes a second year option, than Nolasco. However, I like Nolasco better than Arroyo.
  13. Ok, I know nothing, but I will play, too: 1-Buxton 2-Sano 3-Meyer (Gibson) 4-Stewart ('14 pick Kolek/Trea Turner/Gatewood) (Arcia) 5-Rosario (Hicks) 6-Gonsalves 7-Kepler 8-Berrios 9-Walker 10-Thorpe 11-Polanco 12-Pinto 13-Santana 14-Jorge 15-Baxendale 16-Eades 17-Rosario 18-JD Williams 19-Wimmers 20-Minier
  14. That was a really fascinating read, much different than the usual. Thanks. (And still hoping they spring for JJ.)
  15. [debating whether to take credit for iPhone autocorrect.] I personally think a rotation of JJohnson, Ubaldo, Gibson, Deduno, and Hughes/Worley would make the Twins pretty competitive, actually. And a lineup of Hicks, Mauer, Arcia, Willingham, Colabello, Plouffe, Parmelee, and Florimon...actually could be productive too. Meyer and Sano waiting in the wings. Then Josh Johnson can start and win the Wild Card game, and get extended for 4/50.
  16. How about the Twins sign Ubaldo for 4/52 AND Josh Johnson for 1/11 plus hopefully an option year for 12-14? Can the Twins find 24mm in salary space for this year for both of these guys? Getting Johnson the Twins roster, even on a 1-year deal, is the best way to keep him for an extended time (see Pavano, Carl.) Then I'd like to see Ryan round out his über-aggressive pitching spending spree with a flyer on Phil Hughes (3/18?) or Johan. Would anyone else sign on to this plan?
  17. Were you really struck by lightning four times?
  18. Wow. That really is pure gold. There really hasn't been much sporting joy for Minnesota fans.
  19. Is the Twins' FO a "buy low, sell high" advocate?
  20. Ok, I'll play: Dellin Betances, New York Yankees, career K/9 10.1, 2013 K/9 11.6 (turns 26 a week before your April 1 deadline) John Lamb, KC Royals, career K/9 8.5, 2013 7.1, turns 24 in July Manny Banuelos, career K/9 9.1, 2013 n/a, turns 23 in March Betances has terrible control, Lamb fell apart in 2013, and Banuelos missed 2013 with at TJ. I think the 2013 K rate is a bad criterion. If they were good last year, Willingham and Doumit wouldn't net them. This exercise should be about finding guys who were very good a few years ago, and have fallen off track. Pitchers can take several years to put it all together at the highest levels, so finding guys with good lower minors track records should be the starting point.
  21. These weren't just some projects that were viewed as some as not successful. This is overall end product of a $200 million revenue, high visibility organization in an ultra-competitive industry. The results have been extremely poor, and as a result, the organization has lost a significant amount of revenue, with more revenue losses on the horizon. The "promote from within" mentality is definitely meritorious, and could be a advantageous strength as this sort of loyalty can shield organizations from making rash reactionary choices that can hamper long-term progress. However, the organization needs to couple employee loyalty with a culture of innovation and learning. I don't see that learning from this manager, nor a particular desire to make any changes in his approach. I don't see any defensive shifts, or maximazation of platoon advantages, or creative bullpen usage. And I don't see successful development and integration of young players, which is the single most important skill the Twins will need in the coming few years. I appreciate the "big picture" view of this decision, but in my view, the big picture view shows that long-term success is most likely found under the guidance of a new leader.
  22. Lefty-leaning line-ups will also gain a bigger platoon advantage. Switch hitters get 100% platoon advantage, lefties get 70%, righties get 30%. So the Twins gain advantage by batting lefties and switch hitters, although we know that they never platoon.
