I don't know how someone could either, but Varland has options. That simple fact could have Desclafani starting quite a bit more games than anyone of us would like to see. If their plan for him is indeed long relief and he is now the highest paid member of our bullpen, that is also laughable. Still time for them to change my mind but this move has limited a lot of options that were feasible before it happened. I do not like the implications of it
-
I don't know if we're getting one at this point, not during the offseason anyway. Desclafani will be on the roster unless we miraculously offload him on someone else. This FO is not the type to waive him and eat the $4M without giving him significant runway first. As of now he is on track to make double digit starts for this team in 2024, excuse me while I hurl.
-
Not a bad deal as long as Desclafani is not meant to be our answer for the rotation. If he's all that's added I'm going to be very pissed

Does Aaron Hicks Come Full Circle?
weneedneshek replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If it's cheap and we aren't promising him a roster spot I'm fine with it. He and Martin can duke it out in spring training and the best man wins -
The MSP metro area has 3.7 million, just Minneapolis and St. Paul proper have under 1 million. I imagine they were only using Cincinnati proper for the 300,000 figure. The Cincinnati metro has 2.25 million which is much closer

To begin, if a long term high dollar offer materializes for Bellinger this offseason, the Twins will certainly not be the ones signing him to it. The scenario I am curious to discuss is if one doesn't. Coming off one good year with suspect peripherals after multiple bad ones may cause a lot of teams to hesitate signing him to the type of 6/$150M+ deal he is probably looking for. Would a shorter term 'prove-it' deal similar to what Correa ended up having to accept be something the Twins would pursue? With a lot of signs pointing to the Twins procuring another quality starting pitcher via trade, that would leave some room in the budget for a signing of this type if Polanco or Kepler are moved. As far as fit there is a lot to like. Bellinger can play both 1B and CF to cover the holes Buxton and Kirilloff will inevitably create, and if Kepler is moved he can be our everyday right fielder when the former 2 are healthy. He also hit left handed pitchers better than right handed pitchers last year, a lefty bat we don't need to platoon would be a sight for sore eyes. In general terms I would think the deal could be anywhere from 1/$25M to 3/$75M with player opt outs after each year similar to what Correa did. Just another thought exercise that piqued my interest during this dull offseason

I imagine Austin Martin is also in the FOs plans to cover some of the CF duties (maybe even ahead of Gordon in that pecking order). But yea I am not comfortable with Martin/Castro/Gordon being our everyday center fielders if Buxton has another injury riddled year. Would love to see an upgrade but options right now are extremely limited outside of a trade

Five Remaining Free-Agent Fits For The Twins
weneedneshek replied to Lou Hennessy's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm not outlining the return they would get at all, I'm just saying IF they do move them then my signing would fit into this years budget. Maybe they won't based off past history, I am merely advocating for what I would like to see them do and it fits into the constraints they have shared publicly- 47 replies

Five Remaining Free-Agent Fits For The Twins
weneedneshek replied to Lou Hennessy's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I am aware, I am just saying that it would fit into this years budgetary constraints. If the FO is already planning to cut even more in future years then yea they likely won't, but we don't know that. The twins will only get a pitcher to fill Sonny Gray's slot by adding a top prospect along with kepler/polanco, that is what I am trying to avoid. There is no free agent hitter on Montgomery's level outside of Cody Bellinger who has even worse pricing actually.- 47 replies

Five Remaining Free-Agent Fits For The Twins

Contract predictions for Montgomery are between 20-25 million annually. How is that not in the realm of possibility if Kepler/Polanco are moved?- 47 replies

Five Remaining Free-Agent Fits For The Twins
weneedneshek replied to Lou Hennessy's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I just think I'd rather see young guys fill a lot of these roles than the people mentioned here, outside of Hoskins. And even then I would rather any potential Hoskins money go towards pitching. If kepler, polanco, or both are moved I think a Montgomery signing would be possible even with the self inflicted payroll cut. Imagine filling our pitching hole AND keeping Jenkins, Lee, and Julien? I like that picture- 47 replies

Should the Twins Restock the Garv Sauce?
weneedneshek replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think bringing him in would only make sense if we trade Jeffers as part of a package for some pitching or we find a way to get out from under Vazquez's contract. We need to be able to utilize him some games at catcher to free up 1B/DH for the Kirilloffs and Buxtons to maximize having him on the team. I don't see that being possible with both Jeffers and Vazquez on the roster. -
He has pitched 146 though, 162 to qualify as a 'full season' is not a stretch. The padres proved he could be ramped up and maintain the same quality numbers he put up relieving. I view his limited innings as a plus, very few miles on his arm for a 34 year old.

Agreed, they certainly won't be spending money for someone better than him though. Guess we'll see who we have to give up

Pretty bummed about Lugo, even with our self imposed restrictions we could've easily made that work and wrapped up our biggest need of the offseason without losing any trade capital

Who Do You Trust To Start a Playoff Game?
weneedneshek replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Asking this question really frames what the expectation needs to be for this offseason. I've slowly seen the window shift from 'top of the order starter' to 'middle of the order starter' as everyone gets comfortable with the front office's messaging. The minimum needs to be someone who is a clear upgrade from Ryan and Ober, anything less is a failure in my opinion- 52 replies

If we could package one of them for a young controllable starter to replace Gray I think that would be ideal (and line up with what this front office typically likes to do). Then we could spend our remaining budget on good CF and 1B options. Honestly I really like Bellinger since he can play both and had reverse platoon splits last year so he isn't a liability against lefties. I am very curious to see what his market ends up being. It does seem like the yankees are interested which would likely price us out of him though
-
I think Hicks is the only one I find somewhat intriguing. Could feasibly fit the Garlick/Luplow role we've had the past couple years but with a tad more upside. Id be fine with Odorizzi on a minor league deal if he would do it. I don't see any point in Sano

Yes but the intent is to lock up some free agency years at a steep discount by overpaying during pre-arb/arb. Similar to what the Braves have done with Acuna and Albies to great success
