Article: Twins Sign RHP Michael Pineda
Danchat replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like this move. It's all contingent on Pineda recovering, but if he does, he brings some badly needed strikeout ability in the rotation and, as mentioned earlier, getting out of Yankee Stadium should do his HR/9 wonders. There's still plenty to be done for 2018, of course. I've heard the Twins are targeting Steve Cishek, and that'd be a great signing if it happened. -
Article: Winter Meetings: Reliever Roulette
Danchat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Here's hoping they add a reliever who's at least better than Fernando Rodney. I'll pass on him, we've had enough with older relievers with volatile performances. Most of the other names would suffice, though I think they should focus on finding a guy for the 9th inning. -
Let's worry about the Mauer situation once the 2018 season is over. He's not going to run off elsewhere in FA for big bucks. I think Rooker will be the future 1B and we'll see where his progress is at by that point. He's still a below-average offensive 1B and he could decline further in the future, so that's why I'd rather play the situation on a year-by-year deal instead of giving him a 4 year extension.

Article: The Impending Rochester Rotation Crunch
Danchat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Whoops, I had forgotten about how the Twins had tendered all their RFAs, so Gibson's under contract. I don't imagine they'd get much in a trade but it could be worthwhile. I wanted to believe this guy could be a #3 pitcher, but his performances are just so frustrating, fluctuating between a legit starter and pumpkin over the 2017 season.- 102 replies

Article: The Impending Rochester Rotation Crunch
Danchat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Enns looks like a bullpen arm to me. The rest of the logjam will fade when injuries hit, not worried about that. I expect the Twins to add one starter, but I’d really like to see 2 and have Gibson non tendered.- 102 replies

Article: Can Phil Hughes Surprise Us?
Danchat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The first surgery partially removed one of his ribs, and the second surgery removed the rest of that same rib. -
Article: Can Phil Hughes Surprise Us?
Danchat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I see Hughes as a guy who'll have to pitch his butt off to make the team in 2018. He was terrible last season and after more surgery, I don't see any reason for optimism. Hopefully the FO is willing to let him go if it's clear he's going to be a liability. -

Article: The Twins Should Be Shopping Ervin Santana
Danchat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would be OK with a Santana trade if: 1 - The return is good and the Twins get player(s) that can contribute within the next year or so. 2 - The rotation has been filled with new/better options, not having Gibson and May/Gonsalves penciled in 3 - The FO is convinced Santana is going to regress harshly The chances that all three of these combine is very unlikely, so I don't see a trade happening. But I could very well see Santana regress big time and post a 5.00+ ERA in 2018. Hopefully this doesn't happen and Santana can be a solid #2/3 starter as they push for the playoffs again in 2018. -

Article: Byung-Ho Park Signs With KBO’s Nexen Heroes
Danchat replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I was very confident in early 2016 that Park was going to pan out... it wasn't quite like the Nishioka experiment in its glorious and colossal failure, but it was once again another blemish on TR's record. Hopefully the Twins will recoup that $6.5M they owe him. -
Article: Twins Add Three Players To 40 Man Roster
Danchat replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I find it fascinating how different some people's opinions on Diaz are. Some are absolutely sure that he'll get claimed and stashed because he's such a good prospect and many believe that nobody will want to keep a single A 1B who didn't even hit that well in 2017 on the roster.- 127 replies

Article: Twins Add Three Players To 40 Man Roster
Danchat replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting, I was expecting more names to get added. I think the three names added are good adds. I think the guys left off the list will be fine - I think we tend to overreact about losing our own guys. Maybe one of them will get claimed (maybe Reed or Bard?) but I don't think it's anything to worry about.- 127 replies

Article: What's Next For Kennys Vargas?
Danchat replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If they can find a better DH option in free agency, I would approve and they could move on from Vargas. But if they can't find a deal they like, I think they could try Vargas for one more season and see if things work out. It's just so frustrating how he bounces between a good hitter and one who whiffs every other pitch. -
Dozier wasn't the most egregious Gold Glove - that'd have to go to Hosmer, who was one of the league's worst defensive 1Bs (according to metrics). He has won several before and hit well, so I guess that's what earned him the award?

Article: The 5 Best Pitching Gambles In Free Agency
Danchat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If we're talking about moving one of these guys to the bullpen, sure, that could work as we will likely lose Gee, our long reliever. I wouldn't pencil any of these guys into the rotation. -
Article: Busting 3 Myths About The Twins Offseason
Danchat replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Absolutely. In my opinion the Twins do need to add an impact starter. I find it unlikely that Santana will be able to repeat his very lucky 2017 season. He is prime for regression. I also don't trust Gibson whatsoever. Mejia is just a #5 starter right now with the potential to improve. The Twins cannot go into 2018 with Santana, Berrios, Gibson, Mejia, and May/Gonsalves for the rotation. I don't see a team with this rotation making the playoffs again. -
Article: Supplementing The Twins: A Rotation Trio
Danchat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Chacin screams "trap!" to me. He should stay with the Padres so he can maintain those numbers. Cashner's stats confound me and I think it's unlikely he'll put up anything close to a 3.40 ERA. That's a hideous K/9, I'll pass. -
Article: Buxton and Dozier Gold Glove Finalists
Danchat replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Dozier is a defensively OK 2B who might be a bit below average... so he shouldn't be a finalist for the Gold Glove, but I guess hitting is still a factor, even if it's small. I can't understand how Mauer isn't even in the conversation... I've never liked the Gold Glove awards and they haven't done anything to change my mind.- 35 replies

Article: Diving Into The Offseason: A Dozier Extension?
Danchat replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Dozier is a good 2B, the problem is that most teams have pretty solid 2Bs, so they won't be giving up a lot of prospects to somewhat increase their 2B's hitting. Playing defense there isn't very hard compared to SS and 3B and you can stick a decent bat at 2B. Dozier's trade value would be much higher if he could play SS well, then teams would be jumping at the gun.- 85 replies

Article: Diving Into The Offseason: A Dozier Extension?
Danchat replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well, you definitely don't trade him now. There just isn't a trade market for 2Bs. We should be trying to win in 2018 and trading him for peanuts is not going to help us win. I think he will play out the final year of his deal and we'll reevaluate things at the end of 2018. Did he have another great year? Is there any middle infield prospects ready behind him and Polanco? How are we going to afford Dozier from 2019 to 2021? Plus he's not going to take some 3 year $40M deal. He's going to be well paid by someone, and that's not gonna be us if we lowball him.- 85 replies

Article: Decision On Paul Molitor Looming
Danchat replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This was the right move to make. Molitor had a squad that was falling apart at the end of July and they pulled themselves back into shape and made the playoffs. Buxton melted down in April, but he figured things out. Polanco had a meltdown of his own in July, but then something in his head clicked. Berrios was just garbage in 2016 and he rebounded back to where we'd though he might be. I don't know if Molitor was responsible for any of these, but so many players took steps forward through 2017 and I have to give the manager some credit for it. Don't get me wrong though - the incessant sacrifice bunting, poor bullpen usage (yes, he had poor options, but there were certain points of complete ineptitude, like using lefties wrong, leaving a pitcher in too long and allowing a runner on at the start of an inning, using Belisle (early season) / Pressly / Rogers at the wrong times), and relatively poor lineups (I will still not get over Gimenez in the #4 spot), Molitor has a lot to improve. But he deserves more chances to figure these things out.- 129 replies

Article: NYY 8, MIN 4: It’s Over
Danchat replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
While yes, I do agree with this statement, the fact remains that this is a team in the midst of a rebuild that just so happened to catch the AL's 2nd wild card spot while the rest of the AL cowered away or built for the playoffs. This team was not built for a playoff run and the focus should remain on the future. So with 2017 being the opening of the "playoff window", every effort from now on should be to build this team into a yearly playoff competitor that can go up against New York/Cleveland/Houston. My hope is that 2018 can be the first of many seasons where we say "this is the year!" instead of "let's get competitive in 2019." Let's just hope that Buxton doesn't run into a wall in Spring Training and tear an ACL or have Sano step on third base but have his leg randomly explode. Those may be more Viking-esque misfortunes though.- 54 replies
