  1. Federer is awesome- maybe be the greatest of all time, but Nadal has absolutely pwned the French Open where 9 of his 14 grand slam titles have come. Maybe a greater tennis mind can explain how that happens, do you need superior core strength to win on clay? Also does anyone know if they let women play in the Australian Open?
  2. Could be. Maybe he's a terrible teammate. I doubt it but that would certainly explain it. I tend to think he is a victim of the changing tide towards athletic, contact based baseball and away from strikeouts, where he is pretty prolific. But even so, his k-rate is basically the same as Vargas's or Park's. And then there is Grossman who shouldn't even be in the conversation IMO.
  3. I'm looking at buying more CAKE before their Q4 earnings call on 2/22. Made a nice little gain when they beat expectations in Q3 with $.70 / share. Q4 consensus is only $0.672 so I'm thinking they should have no trouble meeting that, and could beat it again. Its not a flashy stock but they have good fundamentals, happy employees and anecdotally I know its really hard to get a table at their Edina location so I'm hopeful sales will be strong again. And, they do most business domestically so I'm also hopeful they'll be protected from Trump's trade craziness.

  5. I don't think its such a crazy question either. Sure the Twins have a lot of candidates, but none of them are that inspiring. Its sorta like the rotation, about which people are clamoring for more upside. A guy like Chris Carter, IMO, would give them that. Dude just hit 41 bombs in a non-platooned role. He's healthy. He's controllable for two more years. He's not going to win MVP but he'd be at least as good as the in house options.
  6. I'm strangely hopeful about the rotation personally. Berrios still throws 97, has two wipeout offspeed pitches. He'll have a new catcher, he's got the raw material to be an ace. Santiago, Mejia, and Rogers give the Twins a trio of lefties out the gate. Santiago and Rogers are sure-fire big leaguers in my mind. Mejia looks like he could fill out a rotation or be good AAA insurance at worst. Gonsalves is one of the more interesting pitchers to come along in a long time. Typically I trash the soft tossers but there's no denying that every so often a guy dominates with 88 and guile. Weaver, Buehrle, etc. The minor league numbers are definitely encouraging. Then in 2018 you're looking at Romero and Jay, who might have more upside than anyone.
  7. I think Trump understands that a weak yuan and a strong dollar have been bad for US exporters. I don't think he understands much beyond that, either with forex markets, the Fed, deficits, or anything else economically speaking. Like, he says Yellen created a bubble in the stock market. What does he want to do? Repeal Dodd-Frank. He wants to rack up deficits because hey, money's cheap. But if he weakened the dollar, debt would get more expensive. He wants China to free float its currency, but if it did that now, it would probably tank. Etc. etc.
  8. The tools available to Trump present a lot of complicated conflicts and tradeoffs. He pretty clearly doesn't understand all of the possible consequences. Plus no matter what he does, the Fed and other central banks will react to keep their currencies and inflation in check. If he and Congress do pass a huge import tax, for example, there *should* be upward pressure on the dollar to compensate for that. He's way out of his depth.
  9. I can't believe the number of condos that continue to be built. $200-400 / month in association fees for a lot of them.
  10. The season is unfolding in such a perfect way. They were able to ride Dub's early on because they had a good amount of off days, now they have had a flurry of games but everyone else is picking up the slack. And, just in time, 3 days to rest. And yeah this club has a ton of depth. No stars but they seem to have no weaknesses either. I think Parise has the worst +/- on the team for cripes sakes.
  11. Stanley Cup bound
  12. Yeah, the main thing is to keep his bat in the lineup. What I'd do- flip flop Mauer and Sano across the diamond. No reason Mauer couldn't play third as well as Sano.
  13. Sano will be bad, but there is more downside with his surgically repaired elbow, the one that gave him soreness last August. That's my #1 worry by a mile.
  14. Rubio, yowza. Does he have any role in a late and trailing situation? Seemed pretty useless last night when it counted.
  15. He hit one of the upper walks, which resulted in an in-play ball, but it was headed out. First guy to hit it IIRC.
  16. I can't wait to play the Rays this year and watch Sano hit a 3 run jack off the outer catwalk against JDL.
  17. Didn't Passan say the Dodgers viewed JDL as a lesser talent than Buehler?
  18. Nobody's against reaching out. I'm just not going to couch it in religious mumbo jumbo when there are facts. People either accept them, or they don't. Besides, whether they believe cilmate change is real or not isn't as important as, how do we change our consumption and breeding habbits on a large scale? This is the brass tax of it. It would be nice if more people were amenable to facts, and its disappointing so many people can't see past their own nose, but it is what it is.
  19. I really think the ven diagram of people who have scientific concern about climate change, and the religious, would look more like a set of testes than an apple, but maybe I'm wrong about that. In any case, I for one can't be implored to make a religious appeal to stewardship, because anything I would say would ring hollow.
  20. I'm not a liberal, but like a lot of liberals, I'm not religious. That's kinda the thing about "believing" in science, or in my case, believing the professionals, and not a holy text.
  21. Ideally sure, everyone on the fringe has the skills they need to adapt to a changing economy. I don't think affordability is the road block for many of them.
  22. Have any suggestions? Seems like Obama tried framing clean energy into little packets of national security and independence but to no avail. Oil employed a lot of people 3-8 years ago and recapturing those jobs seem to be a bigger priority for folks, long term consequences be damned.
  23. Sad.
  24. Just to be clear, Molitor doesn't really talk about platooning more per se. He just wants to keep Mauer healthier, by resting him more, against lefties if possible. I don't think there are any plans to platoon anyone else.
  25. The market is just terrible right now. Second base? Covered. RH power? What? Screw it. Keep Dozier through 2018, offer a QO. Take the pick(s).
