  1. I don't see why that would be the death of WAR. Maybe the positional adjustment is wrong or out of date but that could be easily changed. As it is, Gordon already has a full Win to make up on CFers or 3Bs
  2. Part of the solution, or part of the problem?

  4. Poulson fared a little better in his third appearance, going 2.0 with 1 hit and 2 walks, a HBP, and striking out 2. Both strikeouts were looking, and the other 4 outs were either pop ups or fly outs. http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?gid=2014_08_17_prirok_elirok_1&t=g_log&sid=milb
  5. These defenses of the 2-8 scale always seem very circular in their reasoning to me. "The 2-8 scale is an objective rubric of a subjective process because it loosely corresponds to skills that are exactly measurable."
  6. Is there any chance the Twins add Reynaldo to the 40 man and call him up in September?
  7. Yeahhh we Twinnin. We twinnin hard! (down 6-4)
  8. I'm not sure why Pierzynski winds up in every conversation about Mauer. Yes, AJ has logged more innings at catcher since 2010 despite being older. A lot more. So he's tougher, one of the toughest players in baseball probably. He's also allowed baserunners to steal at will, can't frame pitches, is a poor baserunner, and isn't as good of a hitter. So, he's not as good, and hardly any cheaper. In fact on a per WAR basis since 2010, AJ's produced 1 WAR per $4.7m. Mauer? 1 WAR per $5.7m. I'm glad the Twins have the better player, even if he's more expensive. I wish they would get a whole bunch more players like that. (I shall now go to the WAR thread and try to defend WAR.) All that being said, I think a lot of the armchair doctoring about Mauer is borne out of a frustration with the fact that the lineup is almost unwatchable without him in it. If the players around him were better, and the team didn't lose 90 games a year, Mauer wouldn't catch so much heat. Maybe its kinda like KG and the crummy T-Wolves teams earlier in the 2000s. KG was among the game's best players and still people said he wasn't "clutch" or whatever. Pretty soon he had enough of it and went and won some championships in another city. We're lucky Mauer seems to like it here a little more, even if some fans don't appreciate his output.

  10. Its intentional now, right?
  11. "Nooooo smoking in the Metrodome!"
  12. They tried Escobar in left field but he was a Bartlett out there. Nunez hasn't been much better. No way should either be put in CF IMO. With Santana, I think it all goes back to the Presley DFA and the repeat mistake of counting on Aaron Hicks out of ST. They did pick up Fuld in April when it became clear Hicks was going to stink again but Gardy wanted 13 pitchers and Santana's dual capacity as infielder/outfielder helped him do that. I also think Gardy wants Santana in the lineup as a switch hitter, speedy, buntable guy. So I think the FO let him keep his guy instead of telling him to go with 12 pitchers and use Fuld in CF. On top of that, Escobar is nearly as young as Santana, a switch hitter, etc - another Gardy piranha basically. So Gardy wants both guys playing, with the better glove at SS (Escobar)
  13. Couple of thoughts. 1. Have people watched Suzuki catch? He shrugs off every foul tip and ball in the dirt like nothing. The guy is tough as nails. So the depth/contingency plan is overly cautious given the durability of the guy he's backing up. If Pinto needs Suzuki to get hurt in order to catch, he'll never catch. 2. The Twins are paying Suzuki 6m/year to start, the coaches want him to start, by some accounts the pitchers want Suzuki to start - if healthy, Suzuki will start. That would put Pinto on the bench, and bench bats are easy to find/replace. Using Pinto to fill that role would be a waste IMO. 3. Age and options. Pinto is 25 and 132 days. He's not going to be any better defensively than he is now. By the time Suzuki is gone, he'll be 29. Look at his body, he's built like a fire hydrant. He needed some time off earlier in the year to recover from pitch blocking drills. By the time 2018 rolls around, I think Pinto's catching days could be done. 4. Garver, Turner, Navaretto, et al. There could be better internal options than Pinto by 2018. There could be better external options. What it boils down to is, Depth is good, waste is bad. Cash him in while he is still worth soemthing
  14. Poulson took the mound in the 6th last night, walked the first batter, allowed the next to single, got the 3rd batter out via fly ball, got the 4th out via strikeout (swining), walked the 5th guy, and then Poulson was pulled. He also allowed 3 stolen bases. His final line: 0.2, 1H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 1K, 0HR
  15. Yes he should be a trade candidate. He's blocked at C by Suzuki and at DH by about 10,000 other guys. He's killed AAA, his value can only go down.
  16. Good read - minor quibble. The strikezone might be smaller than it was 20 or 30 years ago, but since the pitchf/x era began, its actually grown around 5%, and also changed shsape (tighter left to right, bigger in the bottom of the zone). http://www.hardballtimes.com/the-strike-zone-during-the-pitchfx-era/
  17. I have ripped Parmelee in the past but I would be hesitant to cut bait with him at this point. The Twins just don't have any better corner OF options atm.
  18. Clearly there are missed opportunities with such a rigid approach. (Sign Ellsbury) edit: Sorry I couldn't help myself.
  19. I bring it up because there were calls last offseason to put Rosario on the trading block, with the rationale being that he was blocked at 2nd by Dozier and probably couldn't stick at CF. And with other options at corner OF he looked to be very far down the pecking order. http://twinsdaily.com/topic/8236-article-eddie-rosario-as-a-trade-chip/ Those trade calls were met with "give it another year to see if Dozier flops or Rosario dominates at AA," but nobody considered that Dozier would maintain and Rosario would flounder. Now the Twins dare not trade Dozier and Rosario's value is in the tank.
  20. Before the deadline Dave Cameron wrote a piece about why the Cardinals should be willing to deal Oscar Taveras http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/when-im-a-bit-of-an-oscar-taveras-skeptic/ High contact, moderate power, above average wRC+ AAA hitters who profile as corner OF players are among the most overvalued by prospect analysts. Rosario isn't at AAA obviously, but he fits the profile too doesn't he?
  21. I guess I see what you mean but I think calling it "full frontal passive aggressive" is a little extreme. The words in the article seem fair.
  22. I don't wanna hate but I refuse to ignore the peripherals. He strikes out 3.5 times per walk, and his BABIP is still very high. In July when he had a .311 BABIP his line was .263/.300/.342. That's probably closer to his true talent IMO.
  23. Can someone explalin to me what's passive aggressive about Rand's article?
  24. I concur with Black Jack. Santana's routes are a little rough still but he has the speed to catch up to most balls and... I like the quick flip short stop throws. I know you're taught to crow hop, get behind the ball yada yada. But it seems to me he gets the balls in just as fast, if not faster, by just gripping and ripping.
