  1. I'm not convinced May is doing worse now than Correia or Nolaso were doing in May. Ditto Pelfrey and Worley in early 2013.
  2. I assume they backloaded because Lester and Cruz and whoever else they sign this offseason have bills to pay and they need the cap space to pay those guys now. I fully expect them to be back in the hunt this time next year, just like they were in 2013 after finishing last in 2012.
  3. Sounds like any other organization really. I know I've been on the ground floor when some decree is sent down from on high, you don't know where it came from, whose idea it was, what their thinking was behind it. Probably your manager doesn't like it either. You try it out for a little while but pretty soon you're cheating it and only after things get really bad does someone show their face and you start a dialogue where everyone can air their objections and then management can go back and tweak the policy to make it better and make everyone happy. I think its important to get the manager on board first, then approach the grunts with a united front. Give them a chance to respond, tweak the policy if necessary, and then implement the patched policy to get the best results quickest, and earn some respect from employees in the process.
  4. I'm sure he'll bust, these Cubans always do, especially the pricy ones. Then the market will adjust and the Twins can make their move, signing a superstar talent at 3 years / 9 million
  5. Its not that easy. Pitchers have preferences at catcher, and by some accounts there are guys on this staff that prefer throwing to Suzuki. So its natural for a catcher's off days to line up with one or maybe two pitchers (right now that appears to be Trevor May and sometimes Gibson). Obviously this will not always lineup perfectly with the handedness of the opposing pitcher or the rest days of your first baseman or right fielder.
  6. Better results lately but he still gets burned on good waist high fastballs. Struck out on another one last night from Kluber.
  7. Really interesting read http://grantland.com/the-triangle/2014-saber-seminar-mlb-sabermetrics-gets-soft/
  8. Kinda funny - everyone expected TF to solve Hughes' woes but he's actually done a little better on the road.
  9. What happened to the ignore feature?
  10. Here's that no-handed catch by Suzuki in the 4th
  11. FWIW my comment about the pythagoran trend of this club was about 50% joke. Obviously year to year changes in runs scored/allowed aren't linear. And actually, comparing the 2014 team to teh 2013 team using pythagorean record paints them in a more positive light than looking at actual W-L record, since they overperformed it last year and are underperforming it this year. edit: and I have watched about 50% of the games, if we are going to go down that road.
  12. Last year at this point they had a pythagorean W-L of .436. This year its .459. An improvement of .023. If the current 1-year trend holds, the Twins will be a .500 team in 2016 and a wild card contender in 2018. So yeah, smoke em if you got em, I guess.
  13. Interesting observation. Maybe he learned something from one of the big league coaches in his stint here before going to AA (Molitor)? Or maybe someone in AA was able to give him a tip. Or maybe just SSS noise. Something to keep an eye on for sure.
  14. Seriously though, can anyone explain what the Twins are doing with Pinto? How does he fit into their plan? He is wrapping up his 9th minor league season. He's crushed the highest levels. He's even crushed MLB in his short time here. TBH if I were in Pinto's shoes, I'd be getting kinda pissed
  15. I wouldn't be opposed to sticking Pinto in Left, provided he hits enough.
  16. We can't seem to shake that guy!
  17. I used to catch part of the Antiques Roadshow and it always amazed me when people brought in priceless ornaments and crap they found at garage sales. What neighborhoods were they going to? All I've ever found were used diapers and trashy romance novels but I have plenty of those at home already
  18. Fair enough, he probably did give a sign. I still don't like the use of "automatic." Gardy may be onto fangraphs but has he ever looked at a win expectency matrix? I kinda doubt it. If he did, he wouldn't consider it an automatic decision. I realize WE doesn't take context into account (like who is due up after the sacrificer), but I think its probably safe to assume its at best a coin flip decision - hardly automatic. Hearing Gardy say that just reinforces the perception that he's both unfamiliar with advancements and dogmatic about playing small ball. I also think it makes for a convenient excuse if the runs don't score - the player didn't execute.
  19. Impossible question: what would Vargas fetch on the trade block?
  20. Gardy considers it such an automatic sacrifice situation that he doesn't even relay a bunt sign? Interesting
  21. Ugh. That was not his best PA. Takes ball 1-2-3, then takes strike one, and then swings at ball 4 for strike 2, then swings at ball 5 for strike 3. It looked to me like he pushed it because he didn't want to take a walk after Santana had risked the SB of third (successfully). Any ball in play would have scored him.
  22. What role then? Backup C? RH bench bat?
  23. If you are going to do that, should you also expand the notion of replacement level 3Bs and CFs to include the players who are stashed in LF because their bats are too good to keep out of the lineup? The defensive threshold may be lower in LF but players out there are expected to hit better. Overall, a -10 run penalty seems to be in the ballpark.
  24. I also invite Gordon skeptics to read this: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-value-of-alex-gordon-not-using-his-arm/
