  1. I'd go with Darrell Jackson (1978-82) over Mike Lincoln. Lincoln's time with the Twins was brief and his numbers were worse than Jackson's over that time.
  2. When the starting pitching gets lit up, the first thing Gardy is going to do is blame the outfield defense.
  3. I think Bombo raises a good point. We know Gardenhire likes speed in the outfield. By the end of May, it wouldn't shock me if Willingham and/or Parmelee is relegated to DH duties and the combination of Mastroianni, Hicks, Benson is holding down at least two spots in the outfield.
  4. Am heading down there next weekend for the opening exhibition games. I've been to most of the camps in South Florida and I still like the Twins camp the best. The ability to take a seat in the shade right in between all the minor league fields is something we take for granted. Last year we met some friends up in Clearwater at the Phillies camp and they close off the back fields to the general public. Plus the Twins camp is less than a half hour drive to get ribs at Michelbob's!
  5. I think DeVries will get the nod before Gibson. Gibson has not proven he's back to 100 percent following his surgery and he's never had a prolonged successful stint at AAA.
  6. In retrospect, I think some of the pummeling RD has taken from Twins fans over the years has been misplaced. Many relief pitchers can't make the transition to closer. This was clear with Davis early on, yet the Twins kept sending him out there almost every night with the game on the line because they had no one else. If anything, RD's failures speak to the overall failure of the bullpen in 1984.
  7. When you do your Twins top prospects list next year it wouldn't surprise me if Berrios is #1.
  8. No way Gibson comes north with the team. He's coming off of Tommy John and has never pitched a significant amount of time at AAA. The last spot in the rotation will go to Hendriks or DeVries. It'll also be Butera over Hermann. Also, Pressly has the inside track on the last spot in the pen because of his Rule V status.
  9. Another reason McCarty's stint with the Twins was so disappointing is that he was viewed as the heir apparant at first base. When Hrbek's body finally told him it was time to retire, it left a void at first until Morneau arrived.
  10. I concur with the logic of "nicksaviking". I'll even go further and say that Fein is close to a lock and the Twins have to keep Pressley on the major league roster or work out a trade. While I wouldn't have any strong objections to Capps as a 7th-8th inning guy, he's just not a good fit given the Twins current situation.
  11. Mike Lamb, Rondell White, and of course NISHIOKA! In terms of dollars committed and total futility is there any more deserving to be on the list than these three?
  12. Put me down for "better". I can live with the inconsistency at the plate if he just improves his defense. The left side of the infield was once again a complete mess in 2012. However, I do believe experience really counts when it comes to defense, which is why I think he'll be better in 2013. He reminds me in some ways of Cuddyer. Is/was very inconsistent at the plate but seemed to settle down once he found a permanent position in the field.
  13. Didn't the Twins also trade Kevin Tapani that year to the Dodgers for Jose Parra? Another bad trade, although I think we also ended up with Coomer in the deal. Gotta add Mike Lamb to the Worst Twins list. Others were just as futile, but not for that kind of money.
  14. DeVries! When the Twins were desperate for starting pitching last year DeVries was the only one who stepped up and kept the Twins in games on a consistent basis. Not Hendriks, not Deduno, not Walters, and definitely not Blackburn. He's earned consideration for that last spot.
  15. I don't understand this Shaun Marcum fixation people have. He missed two months last year with arm trouble and the Brewers have made no attempt to resign him. Doesn't this concern anybody? We also don't know what his asking price is. A large multi-year deal on a soft throwing righty with a history of arm trouble is not in Twins best interest. I know they need starting pitching, but I don't see the point in throwing away lots of money on stop-gap solution (see Kevin Correia) until younger guys arrive on the scene.
  16. I think the comparison to Mauer's trajectory to the big leagues might be a little premature. Keep in mind Mauer hit .335 at Ft Myers and .341 at New Britain. They could trade Pierzynski because there was no reason to keep Mauer in the minors. Sano is going to have to improve his plate discipline if he's going to be a quality major leaguer. You can have all the power in the world, but if you can't make contact it's useless.
  17. By my count, with the addition of Pelfrey the 40 man roster is now full. I don't see them going after any more starting pitching unless that person is willing to sign a minor league contract. Assuming Pelfrey is ready to go by April, that leaves only one spot in the rotation for DeVries/Deduno/Blackburn et. al. Jerrjens is the only one I can think of that might be available on a minor league deal, but even that's unlikely in this market.
  18. The Revere trade. At a minimum, we know Worley will pitch for the Twins, and then they received some possible help for the future as well with May. While Alex Meyer may have more talent than either of them, the chances of him ever pitching for the Twins are slim. He could get hurt, have difficulty making the jump to AA etc..... So few of these high end prospects ever make it. I wonder if Ryan could have received more for Span if he had waited. I'm not sure anyone anticipated Angel Pagan would get such a large contract, and with Michael Bourn holding out for who knows what, trading for Span would have been a much better option for several teams.
  19. C'mon, who'll ever forget the time Jim Hoey struck that guy out. In between walking 3 and hitting two. I forgot;-)
  20. I don't see Delmon as a fit for the Twins. OF is the one area where the organization has some depth and they need to keep the DH spot open to get Mourneau/Parmelee/Mauer/Doumit at bats. Any money spent on Delmon is less that can be spent on pitching.
  21. It's half full, but the problem is I don't see how they're going to fill the rest of the class with some halfway decent starting pitching. It's unrealistic they can fill out the rotation via free-agency and I think we need to be realistic about what the Twins can get back via trade. Teams with pitching hold on to it. So what do the Twins do? Blowing the team up leaves no guarantee of future results and would cause fan interest to evaporate. The best they can do is patch a rotation together somehow and keep the team competitive for a couple years until some of the younger pitchers step up.
  22. I agree the timing is odd. Maybe there were other opportunities he wanted to pursue and asked management to speed up their decision.
  23. Very classy move by Nishioka. I'm surprised he wasn't even able to negotiate some kind of buyout. I wish him the best. I had high hopes for him when he first came to the Twins. I saw him down in Ft Myers in March of 2011 and he was constantly getting on base and looked very promising. I thought maybe the Twins found a diamond in the rough. Alas...it was not to be.
  24. To answer your question...there's really no one on their roster that interests me. We know all to well that Mets prospects are suspect. I'd love to have Johan back, although I admit that move probably doesn't make much sense for the Twins.
  25. I'm sure the Twins would love to have Niese, but I don't see that happening for Span straight up. Niese is their second best starter and I don't see why they would trade him for an outfielder. The Twins would have to sweeten the pot. I think the Twins place a lot of value in Span, as well they should. But I don't think other teams value Span enough to part with good pitching for him. It's for this reason that I think he'll be on the Twins 2013 opening day roster.
