Or, look at it as Ricky Vaughn now being ready to face Haywood in the closing scene of Major League. Cue the music...

The White Sox have had two losing streaks of at least 14 games this season...and eight other losing streaks of at least four games. Good thing the Royals are done with them and that Cleveland has only three games left. The bats have been strong the last two games, and Ryan had a great start tonight. With a Cleveland-KC homestand beginning next Friday, these are promising signs. The playoff run is underway.

White Sox (Martin) vs Twins (Ryan): 8/2/24, 7:10pm
BH67 replied to Brock Beauchamp's topic in Archived Game Threads
During their losing streak, the White Sox have scored 2.2 runs per game and allowed 6.0. -
Then we're arguing over hearsay. A simpler route of discovery would be for the Twins to release audited annual financial statements. The Braves have done this recently, so there's precedent from which to request them.

On these pages, "money being an issue" is synonymous with "the Pohlads are cheap and squeezing out cash value like a private equity firm." I am not convinced of the latter, but I can be.

"The Pohlads, coming in as something around the tenth richest owners in the sport, want you to believe that television uncertainty circumscribed their plans. They were one of more than a dozen teams dealing with that reality, but were the last (even behind Oakland) to make a trade. Major League Baseball is subsidizing their losses, and the franchise took the most lucrative deal they could get this winter, despite shutting fans out for three months in the process." This hypothesis has become the irrefutable truth of the staff and much of the readership at Twins Daily. Perhaps you're right after showing that clip from Derek Falvey. Perhaps. If true, nothing will change this except either 1) a new owner or 2) the walkout of Falvine, combined with open sniping in the media by CC4 and other stars. So let's first determine if this hypothesis is indeed true by getting the Pohlad family to explain it. That will require a concerted effort by traditional and social media working together, of which Twins Daily considers itself a key player. The unmitigated accusations and fury being expressed here in the absence of such clarity makes reading stories here not worth my time.

Three of the Marlins' top 12 prospects per MLB just arrived in a trade for a relief pitcher who will be a free agent at season's end. If the Padres had to spend that much to get Tanner Scott, the market price for a difference maker for the Twins' playoff run was prohibitive. Falvine must make some prudent offseason trades given the surplus of talent now in the farm system. I'm skeptical that a fully healthy Twins team would marginally improve enough to justify such a price now.

Eighteen hours from "the sky is falling" to gleeful celebration. I'm used to that here, and so be it. A wise man once said that wisdom was proven right by its actions. After 107 games, there's been plenty enough wisdom shown to remain calm during a two-day power outage. And Pablo Lopez is rounding into the late-season form he showed a year ago alongside a dominant Bailey Ober. "Spahn and Sain," etc. My biggest concern after this series is bullpen depth, which beyond Duran, Jax, Alcala and Sands runs a high risk for failure. Here's hoping Brock Stewart gets sufficient time to rest and recapture two miles per hour with better placement. And Varland, Festa and Dobnak may be part of the October pitching staff. Calamitatis et miseriae to more than a few here but not yet justified. I remain happy that a team running at 70 percent of capability since the All-Star break is roughly .500 against some very good teams. The Twins will not last long or even get to October without better health and a deeper bullpen. But the wisdom shown to date justifies optimism, and perhaps more chicken soup with rally sausage.

Strong outing for Festa -- he's figuring this out and may earn a place for October. Good to get Alcala and Jax some work, and Thielbar was also good. The bats were, um, breezy. Good thing the White Sox are next.

Twins (Festa) vs Mets (Manaea): 7/30/24, 6:10pm

13 pitchers in October. Those nine plus Lopez, Ober, Ryan and SWR. I'll wait. -

Then hopefully Stewart's struggles this week can be reduced in September with some more rest. Staumont, Okert and Thielbar will be hazardous in game situations with meaningful leverage. Looking like the Twins want Duran, Jax, Alcala, Sands, Richards, Stewart, Varland, Dobnak and Topa to be available in October. Might open the door for Matthews as well. -

If that was necessary for the Padres to get Tanner Scott, who will be a free agent at season's end, then the cost for the Twins to get something meaningful today was prohibitive. And the FO's track record in getting marginal talent at the deadline isn't reassuring. I have no idea if the Pohlads are cheap. Lack of transparency doesn't necessarily mean that is true. I will note that many of the writers and readers on this site are furious when trades aren't made, and they're furious when an acquisition doesn't pan out. No-win situation for the FO in that case. -

Prospects, Players, or Patience? The Twins Must Choose.
BH67 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If the Twins want to add a genuine ace for the 2024 stretch run, they now have the depth in the farm system to make this happen and still keep elite prospects for the future. But only someone with considerably more upside this autumn than Tyler Mahle would justify such a move. -

Lacking video, I presume that Stewart is dealing with rust but that Okert may be slipping beyond recovery for October. Clarification is welcome from those with eyes. -

For precisely that reason I'd be delighted to include Julien in a package for a 2024-only ace starter. I love Julien in much the same way that I love Luis Arraez. -
The caveat is that this won't make them a World Series contender for 2024. I agree fully with the reasoning but still want an established ace for this autumn only -- and there's surplus talent in the farm system now that a genuine ace should be attainable without impairing the Twins' future strategy.

My favorite moment tonight was not four home runs or both Lee and Vazquez reaching base four times. Instead, Baldelli kept Lopez in the game after he loaded the bases in the 7th with nobody out. Pablo had to clean up his own mess, and to his credit he did without allowing a run. Maybe this will remedy his evident anxieties when runners get on base. Of course, we're ready to complain when the Twins look inconsistent, such as -- hold on: The Yankees have lost 24 of their last 35 games. Anyway, such as that moment when...

Twins (Lopez) vs Tigers (Montero): 7/26/24, 5:40pm

From the top floor of the Detroit Athletic Club (the large building behind Comerica Park just left of dead center field), the view of those must have been fantastic. -

The Tigers' recent surge -- they are now only 5 games back of the third wild card spot -- makes me less inclined to think them sellers. Hoping tonight that Lopez avoids an OOTI ("one of those innings"), sadly common for him in 2024 when the leadoff hitter reaches base. -
If Diamond Sports's respirator will soon be turned off, the Minnesota Twins must secure a visual media solution that reaches a market similar to that of Diamond Sports. As streaming video services become the standard for distributing such content, finding digital partners that can reach the bulk of the viewership who access pay-TV by various means is difficult. That simplicity is lost with the phasing out of cable television. I once managed a government finance office that collected tax revenue from people of all ages. Younger residents wanted to tap their phones. Older residents wanted to hand a tangible paper check to the cashier. All needed to be accommodated reasonably. The future Twins media solution cannot easily accommodate to a similar degree -- and what is perceived as "revenue hoarding" by team ownership can be explained as planning for revenue uncertainty in the next two years. I land there. The $8-15M revenue influx apparently on its way needs to be spent on the 2024 playoff run, and quickly given the impending trade deadline. What follows is going to make a lot of Twins viewers adjust from what is familiar in purchasing home entertainment. I hope this transition can occur smoothly with a durable certainty to broad access and maximum revenue received.
