  1. I think you have it completely backwards. I imagine virtually all Democrats have no problem with gay marriage but can't say it too loudly because public opinion hasn't reached a tipping point as of yet. I imagine Bachmann is sincere in her beliefs, but many Republicans are much more cynical about this, as they personally are probably in favor of (or at least indifferent about) gay marriage, but play up their opposition to play to the worst impulses of their base. So, as in so many political debates of our time, we have a titanic clash of the gutless vs the cynical. Good times.
  2. Cubs did get better prospects, but it wasn't a huge haul (it was a 3B instead of an OF). Goldstein ranked the 43 prospects that were traded, ranked the Cubs guys for Dempster as #8 and #15. Pedro Hernandez was #23. Escobar was no longer a prospect, but probably would have been mid-teens. Dempster had more value than Liriano so these returns seem about right.
  3. What else would you have had him do? The only other option could have involved him waiting for one more start before moving him, but I think it is doubtful it would have made a difference. This was his value.
  4. Left game with a thigh bruise.
  5. False. Have some patience. Getting through the minors is not a race, it is about developing players and for the marginal guys like Herrmann there is great benefit to playing every day at a level he can handle rather than being pushed too high to play less.
  6. Butera is not blocking him. Butera is a defensive guy who plays once a week. I have never seen a scouting report that Herrmann is close to Butera and there is no way the Twins would have him on the major league roster to rarely play.
  7. Rivera obviously is terrible, but its not like any of those other three are really forcing the issue.
  8. I would imagine the team expected more out of him this year. He'll have to hit consistently before they move him to AAA and good for the Twins, make him earn it. Comparing him to marginal and non-prospects doesn't really do much to elevate him.
  9. Radio just announced that Valencia was traded to the Red Sox and optioned to AAA.
  10. It's true that everyone hits at Elizabethon, but if the hitter is under 20 it can often be meaningful. Polanco just turned 19 and he does have some pedigree as a highly ranked prospect when signed. That said, I personally want to see someone get to Beloit before I get too excited.
  11. Small point but Hicks didn't start in Beloit until May, so he did have some time in extended spring before starting full season ball. I think they are a little more aggressive with Buxton because he is better, was the #2 pick, and is a little on the older side for his high school class. Makes sense to push him.
  12. Yea, I don't know how anyone could seriously plan on Deduno doing anything going forward. Nice little story but he is 29 with more bbs than ks. This won't last.
  13. I went to batting practice in Pittsburgh and Revere was hitting bombs into the right field stands. I think he eventually hits 5-10 a year.
  14. This is awesome on too many levels.
  15. Only team ever?
  16. I don't know about this, but could be an OK stick at a corner.
  17. I predict he will need Tommy John, labrum and rotator cuff surgery and will miss the next 17 seasons.
  18. I don't see it as a huge difference. He wasn't pitching in the majors next year either way.
  19. You could replace "Twins" with "Baseball teams" and you would still be right.
  20. Great get might be a stretch. He barely averages 5 ip a start and has an era a little under 5 in the NL. Marquis has actually put up better numbers with SD than Bedard has with Pit.
  21. Burton? And Terry Ryan had nothing to do with Nishi. I still think Zumaya was an acceptable risk.
  22. Crazy deep pitching free agent class? Please expound on that point.
  23. That is a not a deep class of free agent starting pitchers. If they sign one decent guy, trade an OF for another and take a flier or two that would be a success.
  24. The best part is the two non strikeout outs came against the Twins affiliate. Pitching to contact!
  25. I had no problem with how Gardy used his pen. Obviously you try to win every game but what is the point of blowing out a pitcher at this point of the season? Burnett, Burton and Perkins had all pitched the previous two games. Frankly I didn't want to use any of them, and if Gardy was only going to use Perkins if the Twins were up in the 9th I don't have a big problem with that. The issue is that his other five options were Fien, Gray, Robertson, Manship and some guy whose name I still don't know. That is more a Terry Ryan issue. I don't think Guerra needs to be called up yet until he has proven he is back healthy and effective, but probably time for Olivereros and Waldrop to be up. Fien might be worth to keep around, but no reason for Gray or guy whose name I still don't know to be here.
