  1. Certainly has the talent to be the best OF in the system and was BA's #2 prospect in the system (after Sano) coming into the season. Nothing out of Benson/Hicks/Arcia good or bad would really surprise me.
  2. Probably true, but people in the organization (ie Molitor) have been talking up Bigley for at least a couple of years. He won't be a star, probably not even a regular, but might be able to carve out a role for himself on the big league club.
  3. Different financial reality for the team at this point than last time Ryan was GM. It wouldn't make sense to do a trade like that now, mostly because a losing team should be hoarding prospects instead of trading them, and none of the Twins prospects have enough value to get a worthwhile player at this point.
  4. I'm going to see it tomorrow, looking forward to it.
  5. If offers were the same I would trade Span, as I think Willingham is a more valuable player and Span is more easily replaceable. I guess I don't get the speed to trade Willingham. He fills an obvious need for the team and I would think the team would take a hit with the casual fan if they trade him. It's possible he gets seriously injured but it's also possible he hits relatively the same for the next calender year and you can move him at next deadline as well for pretty much the same package you'll get right now.
  6. Barring injury, I would be pretty surprised if he doesn't get another shot in September. It will be a guarantee if Span is traded.
  7. Yes. These notions of a "reasonable" extension are laughable. And I wouldn't pay what he ultimately is going to get this offseason. Get value why you still can.
  8. Liriano and Capps traded. Oliveros, Walters, Blackburn, Hendriks, Parmelee back on. Deduno, DeVries, Gray or Fien off. Whatever injury replacements are needed.
  9. I think you can only be disappointed if you have unreal expectations. They are not going to blow up the team. Liriano and Capps are almost certainly the only people that will be traded before August 1 (Pavano could be a waiver trade), and neither of them will get will bring a huge package in return - though the Liriano return will be OK. Span gets traded during the winter.
  10. I don't follow. It shouldn't be surprising that marginal MLB regular level talent would struggle during the first go around in the bigs.
  11. Disappointing that they didn't use up all of the pool, or even go a little crazy and actually tap into the extra 5% and buy a few more guys out of their commitments. Even though it was a weaker draft class, this was a real opportunity for the Twins to add some talent and it feels that after Buxton and Berios they punted.
  12. Interesting stuff, thanks for posting Curt.
  13. What are you possibly basing these generalities upon? Most of this comes down to talent.
  14. Later rounds have a slot of $100,000, not a cap. So you can sign a guy for $300k and that counts $200k against your cap. However, if you sign a guy for under $100k in those rounds, you don't get to bank the difference. Only in the first 10 rounds can you bank the savings of the slot number. That is why some teams (like the Blue Jays), took seniors in rounds 4-10, signed them for $10k or less and then used the savings to pay above slot for some early picks as well as some picks after round 10.
  15. I think this is pretty much exactly what happens. Twins trade Span for a starter (Zimmermann?), sign one of the second tier guys (Colby Lewis?), sign Hunter on a one year deal, sign a bullpen arm to replace the soon to be traded Capps, maybe get another infielder, and take another bunch of fliers on arms and hope to hit on a couple. That could be a good enough team for 2013.
  16. I was listening to Common Man today and they had flirted with giving this article a Preposterous Statement Nomination. That would have been great for publicity for the site! No chance it happens but still fun to think about. What the last months or so of .500 ball has shown is that pieces are in place to be good again next year. Too much broken with the rotation to fix it in season, but with $30 mil to play with and piece that can get a starter in Span, perhaps moves can be made.
  17. Not much has changed. Nice to see Hermsen do OK, but realistically no one has really broken out.
  18. That's not true. If you don't sign a pick from the first 10 rounds you lose that specific draft pick's slot in your draft pool. You can't pick someone, not sign them, and then use that money elsewhere. What you can do is draft someone, sign them below slot, and then use the leftover slot money for another pick.
  19. Wait, Fanatic Jack had a knee jerk reaction that turned out to be wrong? I do miss the opportunity to see Slowey get lit up every five days or perhaps be a grossly overpaid AAA pitcher.
  20. This got argued over in another post, but for developmental purposes there just isn't that big of a difference between AA and AAA. He is fine playing full time in AA, may even get a September callup.
  21. Its funny to read some of the comments here again after reading Ryan's fangraphs interview and to learn what he truly thinks about statistical analysis.
  22. I loved this interview. I found it a little funny that people were pushing back on the accountability aspect. Does Terry Ryan strike anyone as the kind of person who would like discipline or firings of lower level staff? Or would he ever use someone as a public scapegoat? This interview affirmed to me just how no nonsense he is. I imagine he is the type of guy who treats everyone with respect but will light someone up if they aren't doing their job or are taking shortcuts or being lazy. I also really appreciated his answer on statistical analysis. In my mind he pretty much nailed it.
  23. Is he the most interesting prospect the Twins have? Could end up anywhere between flaming out in A ball to becoming a superstar.
  24. Don't really want to argue, but if you are on the major league roster you accrue service time. I don't think that would be a significant factor for the Twins, just one of many. I think it will be a case that he isn't deemed ready and they don't want to call him up to sit on the bench. Just because the Twins are out of the race doesn't mean they are going to suddenly bench Willingham, Span and Revere. It doesn't work that way. And I would think Benson gets first crack at a September callup. Of course, and as I said, if there are enough trades and injuries it might open up a spot for Hicks, but a lot of things would have to happen for that to occur, not the least of which is he needs to keep up this pace for the next 2 months and not hit a cold streak as he has done in the past.
