  1. I think this is a fair complaint, though I think saying nobody is willing to do anything about it is a little unfair. They did fire the GM. It is probably impossible to radically turn over a MLB roster. I think they have to make a change to the field staff after this season. I thought Gardy was a goner but I think he may hang on. It would be crazy to have two bad seasons and keep the exact same coaching staff. That will be the true test of whether this is an old boys club or not.
  2. Because they have done nothing to prove they can consistently hit major league pitching? If you trade Willingham you are conceding a complete rebuilding year for next year, I don't think they are ready for that for a variety of reasons.
  3. I guess I don't see how Hicks and Arcia are ready for this level yet. They are doing fine at AA but they clearly have things to work on and they aren't quite forcing the issue. There is nothing wrong with having them put on more polish at AA. Herrmann is probably ready for AAA, but there isn't exactly a place for him on the Twins and won't be at the start of next season either. He'll bump up out of spring next year and be ready to roll if someone gets hurt. I don't really get the idea of making the minors some huge race to the top. Just because you can read some numbers and think they have done something for a couple of months at a level doesn't mean quite as much on the ground. Twins are definitely conservative in general, but they'll push a guy when he is proven to be ready, not push a guy until the point where he fails.
  4. Because none of them will be ready at the start of next year.
  5. He has much more value than he would in the offseason. Teams are trying to win now and need him for a playoff push. In the offseason there are other ways to acquire a player similar to him. The issue is that if the Twins trade Willingham at the deadline they will basically be punting next season. They might be able to sign a guy or two, but I would argue the Twins have 2 holes they have to be thinking upgrade this offseason (2B and RF), and if they move Willingham that adds another one. Add to the rotation and that is a lot to change over. Obviously if Ryan is bowled over he should move him, but I don't see that happening.
  6. I don't know. If I worked for a company for ten years and then knew I had to up and move at a time not of my choosing to work the same job for a different company, even if I was being paid well, that would still be a pretty stressful time in my life. Sure it's nowhere near the situations you mentioned, but I used to get stressed when I had a 10 page paper due in less than 2 days. Think how insignificant that is in the grand scheme of things.
  7. There is a balance in this situation. You need to rest players so they will be good and able to perform over the long haul of a season and the years they are part of the team. If they pitch Burton, a guy who has been injured most of the past couple of seasons, too much and too frequently he will break down again. Slightly increasing the odds of one victory is not worth the risk of the player breaking down for the second half of the year, or being able to contribute next year. These are the tradeoffs managers need to make every year. I often thought that this was a hidden strength of Gardy in the past decade. They would rest players in a manner that seemed excessive, but they were always a team that finished the regular season strong (and then get smoked in the playoffs). Obviously the last two seasons have rendered this moot.
  8. It costs service time for the Twins, costs extra money to keep bodies on the 25 man roster, causes potential 40 man issues, and prevents the players from development time in instructs, or just getting some rest or preparation for winter leagues.
  9. Hicks is having a fine season for sure, but what benefit is there to not letting him finish a full season at AA. There is little to gain by rushing people into AAA. He should be there next year and ready to join the Twins by mid-season.
  10. I think he makes sense on a one year deal for both on the field and marketing reasons. No idea what he would cost or if other teams would have interest.
  11. A good prospect in A ball is more valuable than the arb draft picks. Still almost certain that Liriano is traded.
  12. I can understand the argument that people don't think the current leadership can break through (I would disagree, especially about Terry Ryan), but I think the idea that people don't expect more and haven't expected more is a complete strawman.
  13. I would argue that trading veterans for prospects is the greatest skill that Terry Ryan has shown in his career as a GM. Hope he can do it again.
  14. I wouldn't expect a ton. 2-3 pitchers and a couple of bats. They won't call people up just to call them up and have them sit on the bench.
  15. Bad assumption. Reusse's no fan of women's sports, but he especially knows baseball, and a little basketball and football to boot. He took a little bit of a contrarian stance and instead of praising Adelman suggested that he needs to prove a little by developing Williams and to a lesser extent Johnson. I don't see how that's a big deal.
  16. +1, I almost exclusively check out the forums.
  17. Is there a way to change the color scheme within a specific posted topic. The blue that denotes an unread post is hard for me to pick up (because of color blindness). BYTO had the baseball icon for unread posts, any chance to have something like that rather than slight variance of color? For clarification, I'm talking about the the colored in box that appears next to the date/time that the entry was made. Is there a way to change the color or change that to an icon instead of a color? Light blue is a problem.
  18. I don't see a problem with this column.
  19. The dream would also be having the Low A squad in St. Paul, perhaps share a stadium with the Saints if the new one gets built.
  20. I like it a lot too. Gardy has really stumbled into a solid way to close out bullpens by using Burton or Perkins depending on matchups. The question is whether he can maintain that for a full season or if he has to have a designated closer.
  21. This. And its the right way to handle the situation. Because of the contract Blackburn will get one more chance and Gibson does need to have his innings monitored.
  22. I don't see what this has to do with Dick and Bert. Dude has gone 217, 217, 223, 221 IP the past 4 years with good eras, solid k rate and numbers that are getting better this year as he is entering his prime. He is a top 5 pitcher in baseball, the favorite to win the NL Cy Young. How is that not an ace? I generally agree on the others, mostly because the rest of them have had injury concerns and Bumgarner is still a little young.
  23. Wow, Cain is a #2? High standards.
  24. Of all the problems hitting our economy right now I would say outsourcing is pretty low on the list. Playing up stuff like this is why I will never be a full-fledged Democrat, but its not like the Republican alternative is all that attractive. The Obama campaign is not stupid, the one place they can get movement into the Romney coalition is with blue collar whites. Ads like this can only help. As an aside, after all that has happened in the economy and our country I am pretty surprised that no coalition has formed as strong anti-bank and anti-buyout. There is some noise but neither party will take up that mantle. Shows how corrupt our current politicians are in regards to the large banks.
