  1. Isn't the usual protocol for a team to let a new draft pick finish the first year with his usual mechanics and then try to make the needed adjustments over instructs? I wonder if the Twins have plans for him this offseason.
  2. I can't take Honus Wagner all that seriously, way too long ago, such a different game. I'll take Jeter.
  3. But the easy counter is that it would be a stretch to think they are actively hurting the team by signing them either. A team can try to compete in the short term while also building for a better future. You, among others, say there is no plan, but I would argue this is what they are doing. They are trying to patch in the short term and try to be competitive while doing nothing to compromise the long term future of the organization (i.e. trade prospects). I don't think calling up prospects before they are ready is very helpful, and I don't think playing marginal big leaguers like Parmelee and Colabello instead of signing legitimate mlb players does much of anything either.
  4. I certainly agree with your last point, they aren't trading Dozier.
  5. The movement for this franchise will come from Buxton and Sano, hopefully some improvement from guys here (Arcia, Santana, Hicks), current established guys (Mauer, Dozier), the development of pitching, and perhaps a surprise or two. Bridging the gap for a year or two with Morales and/or Suzuki does nothing to change this.
  6. 1. Polanco and Rosario aren't going to be ready by opening day 2015 2. The free agents are lacking 3. Why would a team trade a really good 2B and then try to turn around and trade for another one? This isn't fantasy baseball. The other question would be what exactly do you want for Dozier? Pitching prospects? Good long term but doesn't do much for 2015. Trading Dozier is punting any slim chance of competing in 2015 that currently exists.
  7. I think we can say with pretty good confidence how good Colabello and Parmelee will be. Opening day next year is probably a little early to expect any sort of sustained success for Vargas. There would be nothing wrong with starting him at AAA and having him ready in case of injury and break him in on a more reasonable timetable. I wouldn't want Morales for more than a year (unless it was a cheap two years, which is unlikely), I find it hard to believe another team would give him that. The question is all about Pinto. If he is in the plans to catch next year Morales makes sense, if Pinto is not in the plans to catch, probably need to keep DH open for him.
  8. Season isn't over yet either. He has trended up slightly over the past week and I would expect a better second half than he has so far.
  9. Another interesting part is that Aiken and Nix have the same advisor and the team is trying to leverage him. They are offering Aiken exactly the 40% of the slo threshold needed for a replacement pick next draft. This seems very fishy. All within the rules, but my general attitude is that baseball is still a person business and if you mess with enough people it will bite you eventually as an organization. If Houston doesn't get really good in the next year or two this front office will fall hard.
  10. I for one am a fan of shifting a bunch of defensive positions and making them all worse.
  11. I would offer those exact deals. DHs with minimal positional flexibility just aren't in much demand.
  12. No one is worth that money. But it won't stop people from complaining about the Twins FO for not signing a great FA OF in the offseason.
  13. Would you go multiple years on Span? I'm not sure about that. And I wouldn't want Parmelee anywhere near a regular job entering the season.
  14. I'm generally on board with this. I don't think you can count on Vargas being anywhere near the lineup on opening day next year. My question would be what they truly think of Pinto. If no chance he can catch then I wouldn't want to lock in a 1B and DH for next year (with also the possibility of Sano ending there). If Pinto can catch, or at least part time catch, then I would be all over this for a year, possibly two, if the money was right.
  15. This is an important point. I will say this about Lindor, I was as impressed with him as anyone yesterday in the Future's Game. So smooth at SS. Russell and Crawford will almost certainly stay at SS too, but I think they other guys have definite question marks about their ability to play the position. That is why those three are ranked that high even without the plus offensive tools.
  16. I didn't mean it for you specifically (or even primarily) - probably shouldn't have quoted you. People can talk about whatever they want. I would just say using free agency signings in 1991 like it has any bearing on free agent signings in 2014 probably hurts your credibility.
  17. Why do people keep bringing up a free agent signing from 1991 like it has any bearing on what happens in today's game (and free agency)?
  18. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/top-25-prospects-a-midseason-update/ Five in the Top 24. That'll play. Other news is that Buxton is now actually #2.
  19. A more likely explanation is that the past offseason had actual pitching options worth signing in free agency.
  20. Fans, by their nature, have irrational expectations of what a front office can do.
  21. It seemed a little overhyped to me, much more gimmicky than anything all that revolutionary. It was a very controlled environment/lines and staff on hand to make sure people weren't too drunk (and also of age). Plus with all the good beers at Target Field, not sure why anyone would get beer from there anyways.
  22. Mocking the Vargas double was a little unfair, that was a rope. But he did look a little overmatched on stuff on the outer half. Berrios had much better reviews from other analysts at the game. My personal view is that his fastball wasn't as straight as I thought it would be and change was great too. Breaking ball left a little to be desired.
  23. The 2012 free agency class was historically awful while the Twins also desperately needed pitching. Terrible combination. My argument has always been that people wanted the Twins to sign a caliber of pitcher that didn't exist that offseason and Correia hate is the projection of that. EDIT: I should add that Correia has done pretty much exactly what the Twins expected when he signed. He took the ball every five days, ate some innings, and bought some time for depth to be developed behind him. As a bonus, they might even be able to flip him for a prospect in the next couple of weeks. He certainly wasn't sexy, but ended up being just mediocre enough not to be a disaster that everyone thought (hoped?) he would be.
  24. More fans overrating their own prospects. I'm as guilty as anyone admittedly. If the Cardinals actually do acquire Suzuki, it would be fun to check back and see the response based on what they are assuming the cost in prospects would be.
  25. I hope you are right. And I think you are.
