  1. The Rays went to the WS the year of the trade.
  2. With a 4% bb rate and an iso of barely over .100. And a mediocre (at best) defender in a corner. Age aside, if the Twins went for a guy like this today they would get killed, and rightfully so. I also think this was a prime example of how analytically the Rays were running circles around the Twins at the time. EDIT: And I know "age aside" is a significant caveat, but he was already trending down, and a better understanding of prospects no would not be fooled as much by age relative to level.
  3. While true, the main core of this team is aging, I would personally have gone for it this year and the money would still be freed up after the season.
  4. Of course it is Ryan's fault it didn't work. They obviously traded for the wrong guy or didn't spread the risk enough by getting multiple pieces. His process was still better. Your first sentence/paragraph doesn't come close to squaring with your first sentence in the second paragraph.
  5. I'm surprised they are selling too, but I'm curious how it will all shake out by the deadline. They did have seven free agents coming into the deadline, would be interesting if they move almost all of them. I still think they are saddled with some less than favorable contracts going forward and this is going to be a massive talent drain.
  6. I agree on the horrible defense - that was clearly not a priority, and a mistake, especially considering the pitching. And perhaps not coincidentally when they started to emphasize it more the team has done significantly better. But I do judge trades and free agent signings different.
  7. Why would you criticize Bill Smith like that?
  8. Hardy came two offseasons later, Pavano was an August guy a season and a half later. And as I stated - difference in timing between a rebuild and a reload.
  9. Looking back I realize I didn't mention corner OF but thought that would be assumed - ridiculous hypothetical aside.
  10. Only if it is also stipulated that signing from a limited FA pool should have different expectations than using your best trade assets. And I assume the hole at SP question is rhetorical. They traded their best SP.
  11. A 20/0 k/bb ratio in 15.1 ip will play. But of course he should be at AA at least.
  12. The other difference is that Ryan was straight rebuilding at that point and Smith was rearranging the roster for a future run. The Smith trade acquired a (ahem) limited defense corner of with a brutal bb rate and created holes at sp and ss that were never really filled when they were competing again. I guess I shouldn't argue semantics so much, but I see "praise" as more the admiration side, stronger than mere acceptance and understanding - which is what I saw in the responses at the time. I thought the Span trade was acceptable, the thinking in a context of a rebuild made sense, but I was a little surprised they didn't get a second piece in addition to Meyer to spread out the risk. This proved to be a valid concern. I was never a fan of the Delmon trade - though, like usual, I tried to give the front office the benefit of the doubt for a couple of years.
  13. This is awesome. And that is full extent I can contribute with my creativity and Simpsons memory.
  14. Agree with this.
  15. I'm on they are still in the lead for the wild card and should still go for it side. Just wouldn't give up great prospects for rentals. And also on the side that expects them to be better next year too, so I wouldn't trade players that would help in that endeavor for prospects. So bad idea all around.
  16. Funny how you provide a critique and a rebuttal to own critique in a sentence.
  17. KC too.
  18. Not at all. Still a bad idea.
  19. It would stick with saying everyone thought Ryan fleeced them, fits your point better.
  20. Oh, so now it was a fleecing? I look forward to your next description of this trade.
  21. What rule?
  22. I generally think decisions made by Smith can be considered his fault. Do you suggest a different standard?
  23. Praised? You overstate that. I think people accept the process considering where the Twins were at at the time. Trading a SS and SP for a corner OF and a utility guy is a bad idea.
  24. Fair and just semantics. I included him because he'll almost certainly be prospect eligible after the season.
