  1. Not that young, they start a senior and 2 juniors. Maryland starts 3 freshmen.
  2. Should have trusted my instincts.
  3. It is true that said schmo needs a level of interest slightly above nonexistent to play RF. Important lesson indeed.
  4. I'm an irrational, optimistic homer, but why can't we have nice things? A committed Sano can go 280/390/560 40 bombs, 120 rbis. Would make 80 wins seem a little more realistic.
  5. I'll make a hot prediction. Napoli signs a 1 year deal, Vargas starts at AAA, and Park never plays another mlb game for the Twins.
  6. That would be the logical follow up to last year when he was dead accurate about Sano.
  7. Putting him in RF might have been a mistake, but I think this point is obvious. That said, I do think the bigger issue than moving to RF was he didn't seem to take last offseason seriously enough. Happens with young players, especially if they have some early success. Does seem he has learned from his mistake. We shall see.
  8. Roethlisberger went 11 and the other QB from the round (I'm not counting Houston) went #1 overall. Seems that half outside first round is a fluke more than a plan.
  9. I do think the instinct to call people who aren't on the same page stupid or a bigot needs to be curtailed.
  10. While this is true, for better or worse it doesn't matter. In many ways you represent whatever the narrative says you are. I'm an Evangelical Christian, I live with this all the time.
  11. But it is very real. It's not like the opinions and actions of the vast majority of people are under consideration in our political culture. It's the extremes that inflated and then bludgeoned. Boring moderation doesn't sell anything. While appreciating that some things are not perfect in our country, people have really underestimated the risk of taking a blowtorch to what we have. They'll find out when The Thing happens.
  12. More fuel to the point about De Leon being a classic example of the analytics/scouting split. I personally lean the Law direction more than the Cameron direction, but that outcome is far from certain at this point.
  13. Here's an interesting read: http://thefederalist.com/2017/01/23/donald-trump-first-president-turn-postmodernism/ I'm skeptical of some of the grand conclusions of post-modernism, but I think it does explain some of the reason his support didn't collapse in the run up to the election. I'm pretty sure his Administration is going to be a disaster, but the question is then now what? Will it be a doubling down of the same old, or will be this allow people to rethink their positions and methods and tactics. I suspect a whole lot of people have been turned off about much of politics for a long time (the unique talent of Obama, combined with some honorable opponents, masked it for a little bit longer). What will come out of these ashes?
  14. I think they screw them in wages, but the entry level bonuses would not be that much different for about 95% of people entering baseball. For some of them it might even lead to a bigger bonus - those drafted after round 1 but before round 10. I also think if it was true free agency for amateur players it would lead to competitive disadvantage in the long run, with highest revenue teams consistently spending on the best talent. The reason we don't see that in the international market, for instance, is that it is done in the context of constraint. Lift that and there will be different outcomes. I think it is a harder situation to thread than is usually suggested by analysis that is overly simplistic in my mind.
  15. Correct, total pool isn't cut, just the top slots were flattened a little bit. Upshot is that there is less of a gap between the top pools and everyone else. Like I said, that is probably the best long run move, just unfortunate that the Twins couldn't get the benefit for one more year. International pool too.
  16. Maybe the most elite guys. For the vast majority of them it works fine.
  17. Flattening the value of picks was a good change, just wish it wouldn't hurt the Twins right out of the chute.
  18. On the plus side, Defense seems in good hands. I do wonder if some of the Departments can be scaled back or even eliminated. But I would like to see this down a little more strategically, a little less on the haphazard side. Ultimately this will all be fine for the Administration and Republicans until an actual crisis occurs. That's probably why they want to jam everything through so quickly. Once a blunder happens they're all going down.
  19. I imagine part of the reason is that 1 year contracts for good players are rare. They are often injury risk or performance reclamation guys, so they have to stay healthy and perform. Twins actually did it last year with Abad. Minor league deal, pumped up his value, flipped for a prospect before he collapsed.
  20. I'm not proud of the actions of my fellow Evangelicals this election cycle, but I suspect this would be an issue where a massive wedge could be driven if it is opposed correctly. Not all, perhaps not even majority, but enough to cause serious cracks in the coalition. Plus, as you said, it is just a terrible, evil position to take.
  21. They had the men and capability to invade by 1942, they were in Africa and soon after Southern Italy. They didn't get into France until June, 1944. It may not have been successful or led to larger casualties, but the capacity was there. I'm not saying it was wrong, to wait until success, but I also imagine they weren't going full go while Germany and Russia were slugging it out. It was strategically a good thing for the West.
  22. Crimea
  23. Yes. He talks with no meaning. He is a terrying combo of bad ideas, narcissism, no impulse control, and general ineptitude.
  24. So in 6 days he got an ally to cancel a diplomatic visit and all the senior level employees at the State Department have resigned. Diplomacy is off to a flying start.
