  1. Followed up with saying Iran is taking more of Iraq by the day. War is coming.
  2. I don't think it should ever be 100% only hitters in 1st round, but especially early it should be a pretty much surefire college arm (and even that doesn't work all time, ahem, Mark Appel).
  3. Another issue with funding is Federal mandates for children with disabilities. Huge expense, very hard for smaller districts to meet, thus the need for more Federal block funding. Some states distribute in a competent manner, others not so much. Among the many concerns I have about Trump and R control, I do worry about mandates/regulations like this. They are not the most economically efficient methods of providing services to people with disabilities, but it does provide the most dignity. I like and approve that our government does its best to provide the most people with the most dignity. It would be easy to cut and shift under the guise of saving money, but would have significant costs.
  4. Not this offseason.
  5. If they would have drafted Benintendi or Happ, for instance, they would have someone to trade for a pitcher.
  6. Draft hitters, acquire pitchers through other means, either trades or through developing high school arms selected in later rounds. True free agent aces are pretty rare anyways.
  7. I did like the pick, and when compared to the alternatives of the draft it has actually worked out pretty well for the Twins. It's not sexy, but getting decent value out of a pick in the 20s is a win. Even more so when compared to the alternatives (outside of Trout of course).
  8. That's true, which is a failing of scouting department. If they two most successful franchises pop a college bat right after you that is either really good (Benintendi) or on the come (Happ), it is good to look again at processes. This isn't even a hindsight complaint.
  9. Does this imply he wouldn't throw hard to get out of jams when he was a starter?
  10. Morneau chatter originated with Mike B right? I'm not interested in trying to crack the Dodgers-Twins negotiations in that other ridiculous thread happening.
  11. Of course the media is biased. People who work in (and especially run) large media organizations are well educated, urban, international and usually socially progressive. Everything they do is interpreted through those lens, which is why they were caught off guard by populism. Even the media that tries to pretend they aren't these things actually are.
  12. Considering the reporter, very easy to give the Twins the benefit of the doubt.
  13. Gorsuch is a masterstroke by Trump.
  14. Beyond those 4, some relivers have a higher WAR, then it is Shelby Miller, Garret Richards, and Dustin Ackley. Miller was certainly spun into a lot of value, but also drafted ahead of Gibson. Gibson might end up the best of all the rest. I just don't know what you expect from 22. It was a good pick.
  15. Look at the draft, there are only 3 guys who are clearly better (in the 1st and 1st supplemental round), Trout and 2 guys taken before Gibson (Stasburg and Pollack). What expectations do you have? EDIT: Sorry, I missed Mike Leake too. Also taken before Gibson.
  16. There's nothing bad about it. Like you said, it's baseball. The profession is based on throwing stuff against the wall.
  17. I actually liked the Gibson pick a lot. He was pretty highly ranked and slipped because of an injury. That strikes me a good risk in the back half of the first round. And aside from the small matter of missing Trout, his performance has absolutely justified the pick. I accepted the Jay pick at the time, but never liked it.
  18. Indeed that's an interesting complaint regarding that pick. My complaint is it was too much of a gamble that high. There were safer college bats available.
  19. I do think that's when it all crumbles. Unless, you know, they instigate the violence themselves to scapegoat a vulnerable minority.
  20. Makes sense. It's early though. Will be interesting to see if he can keep the coalition together.
  21. The AG can be whatever the Senate allows it to be. I certainly agree with the last sentence. They may view it as a "win" to force opponents to so publicly protest something that their base supports, but when the narrative is incompetence, that is hard to shake, especially when challenges arise and aren't met.
  22. We're primarily liberal elitists that comment in this section, but I think it is important to realize that a significant portion of the people who vote for Republicans approve of all that Trump is doing. The Republicans in Congress are not in a place that it makes sense politically to come out strong against Trump. Tonight is going to be telling in my mind. It represents a chance for Trump to strengthen his support. If they nominate someone who splits conservatives, he'll be in a lot more trouble. Ultimately, Trump works as long as two things happen - the economy stays relatively strong and The Thing either doesn't happen or is responded to in a competent matter.
  23. When it is no longer politically tenable to support him. They do value their jobs.
  24. The difference of course is that Mike B is theoretically a professional.
  25. Perhaps, but it is still amateur hour in so many ways. They won't have control of military and the Senate will stop him eventually. If nothing else, we may get an Amendment out of this. We almost have to. Because the next one will be much more competent.
