  1. Within a few weeks Trump will be worse for Republicans than Democrats. Tonight might be the last good chance to reassure conservatives.
  2. Good rule of thumb for AG is ideologue is much preferred to a lackey.
  3. Not really an overreach. AG is a political position. Makes sense he'd want someone to do his bidding.
  4. I stand by this. Clicks and conversation. Name dropping a former Twin makes it doubly so.
  5. At best Jay is a #2 starter. He's not that bad of a prospect, 100ish in baseball, but certainly not what you want from the puck. Missing on Benintendi is a disaster, but I wouldn't weep about Fulmer yet. The draft isn't a race to the bigs.
  6. Executive Orders in and of themselves are overhyped as a menace. They are just guidance on how the branch is to carry out duties. The problem is too much power and discretion concentrated in the Executive. Been trending this way for decades and not exactly clear how a divided Congress pushes back.
  7. I do think the value of a starter over a reliever is overstated in the short term, such as half a season or less. This is especially true when he was not a clear upgrade over a handful of starts. Certainly massively more upside, but not clear he would have outperformed the rest of the year. Development is nice, but winning is even better. The blunder, as stated, was putting him back in the bullpen in 2016, or at the very least not moving him to rotation soon after it was evident it was a lost season (so, week 2).
  8. Those concerns about starting are well founded. Didn't last that long in the rotation and ended up with an injury (albeit minor). Even a dominant lefty reliever at the #5 pick is an undesirable outcome.
  9. I agree with this. I look say it would be a mistake to have Berrios penciled into the rotation on Day 1 as Plan A, but absolutely he can earn his way into the opening day rotation. It's not like he's beating out a bunch of studs. But saying he utterly dominated AAA, which is debatable at best, and saying he has nothing to learn at AAA, which was proven pretty wrong from his debut last year, so put him in the bigs, is a massive mistake. I'm confident no major league front office would do that. He definitely has to earn it.
  10. Fair enough. It's a big board, lots of opinions welcome.
  11. Again, his stats provide hints that his command was not as sharp last year, combined with reports he was struggling throwing quality strikes and lacked plane on the fastball. Not surprising that he struggled with walks and bombs in the bigs. This isn't utterly dominating to me.
  12. Maybe Law is right about Berrios.
  13. Because it's not clear he utterly dominated AAA.
  14. Quick scan of game log suggests the back to back wasn't exactly rigidly enforced. My skepticism that it was caused by relieving over starting remains.
  15. It's a Sid Hartman scoop!
  16. I've heard him say that and it's certainly possible, but I'm a little skeptical it was from relieving and not just pitching. Pitchers get hurt. And even if that is the cause, Twins wouldn't have known that in 2015.
  17. I also don't think May would have been a clearly better starter in 2015. I would even consider the idea that it was better strategically that season to roll with the better upside reliever to finish the season (though that spot start was epic roster mismanagement). The big mistake was not getting him into the rotation last year, though health might have been a factor. May on the radio yesterday said he never felt good going into the season. Maybe 2016 was going to be lost no matter what.
  18. I think half of what Mike B posts is trolling fans like us.
  19. I don't have anything against Sano, I have high hopes for him. I think what happened to him can happen to young athletes who have success. And I think his response this offseason speaks quite well to his character and effort. My position comes from comparing his weight at the end of 2015 compared to the start of 2016 combined with various reports that were released throughout the offseason.
  20. I think two guys are on the opening day 25 man that aren't in org yet.
  21. I think the Twins last year would have been ecstatic if he had merely gained none over the offseason. If he had put his full effort into making rf work last year and failed, that would have been 100% on the Twins.
  22. I understand what you're saying, but 3 guys in all of baseball hit 35 jacks with 110 rbi last year.
  23. This is probably true, but it makes all kinds of sense to try every avenue before you give in to a 23 year old full time DH. Especially because he has such a cannon arm and some potential athleticism if he can keep the weight off.
  24. This may be true, but also possible that he started to struggle once pitchers started to figure him out. The new front office has nothing invested in him. My speculation/hope on Vargas is that the front office has a new hitting approach and plan for him and will want him to start in Rochester to develop it. I generally agree with the thinking that having a couple of veterans is valuable for developing young players. Napoli seems like he could be a fit in that regard.
