  1. Who said it wasn't impressive? I actually thought it would be higher. They traded one of the top handful of starters in all of baseball.
  2. At the very least, it's a bizarre topic to explore in a series of articles.
  3. I am strongly in favor of civil disobedience and protest, and will probably become more so over the next four years. I just wish they wouldn't throw things at police officers. I greatly admire the courage of police officers who stand in the line of fire and don't overreact. It is an unbelievable gift for our country.
  4. I found it interesting that the White Sox, for all their sound and fury this offseason, is still only rated at #10 right now.
  5. Reminds me of the I94 protest from last year. Just missing the fireworks. Police officers who stand in the face of that and don't overreact are truly courageous.
  6. And the Dodgers would do it in approximately 0.5 seconds and say thank you sir can I have another.
  7. I wouldn't trade Polanco for Strewart. But I'm also pretty meh on Stewart.
  8. And so it begins.
  9. Without question those are the two jumps that are the toughest. The longer I look at prospects, the more it seems like a 4 step process (college guys usually combine the first two). Get in the system and be a professional (Rookie ball) Handle a full season (A ball) Fine tune and master the apprenticeship (AA and AAA) Big leagues
  10. Keith Law, who hates the Twins, will probably be the high man on the system, and by a few slots too.
  11. I think they are both no doubt, should be easy first ballot, guys too. It was interesting to consider the Griffey vs Jones point. I'll agree with you all and say Griffey too, but it's not an absurd statement to consider Jones.
  12. They are different types of hitters and the career arcs are different, but for the totality of a career, Beltre is a very interesting comp.
  13. Even though I'm not a huge WAR guy, I think historical perspective is a decent, directional, contextual use of the stat. He never exceeded 7.3 (his number in 99). Very, very good season, but doesn't strike me as amazing in context of the time. (And, to be clear, this is not a reference to PEDs, but the watering down of pitching in context of expansion. Raw numbers are not as valuable). I think the genius of Jones, as you allude to, is the long stretch of really good play.
  14. I understand the position on Jones. He never had an amazing year, but his 96-03 stretch is really impressive, with the 07, 08 coda. He played 18 seasons and never dipped below 1.9 WAR, and it was only his last 3 that he was below 3. That is a really impressive career. Griffey had an amazing 12 year run, then did very little else.
  15. I think an argument can be made that Jones is better than Griffey. My quick impression is that Griffey had the better peak and was the more dynamic player, but Jones was on the really good tier for longer.
  16. I'm sure he is too. I think most systems have a few guys like Kiriloff and Javier, potential stars that are a long ways away. I generally will accept pedigree early, but I can't get all that excited until a prospect handles full season ball.
  17. Twins are ranked #11. http://www.espn.com/blog/keith-law/insider/post?id=6115 Summary is that the Twins have some depth of talent in the minors but lack star power (the potential stars are currently in the bigs). "A half dozen or so mid rotation starters, a slew of hard-throwing relievers and a few high-probability position players." Seems fair, but also not a disaster. A Dozier trade to the Dodgers doesn't seem like it would solve the underlying issue, but having the #1 pick and a few other hight picks with money saved will help reload the system.
  18. Sickels generally values floor and probability much higher than others (Sickels is generally the highest on reliever prospects). De Leon would still probably be around the #10 pitcher for mlb.com, so it's not *that* big a difference.
  19. I'd want 3 to 6 additional years, but I'd probably wait another year before inking that deal.
  20. I agree with this. For me, unique players like Vlad earn extra HOF credit in my mind relative to a more straightforward data analysis.
  21. Injuries to a pitcher do that.
  22. Feliz goes to the Brewers, 1 year, $5.35mil (and incentives). Between that and the Casilla contracts, the Twins could have added a veteran closer at a reasonable price. Still some more options.
  23. Come on, I'm trying to get optimistic here.
  24. If Sheffield is now on the table, seems like there's finally a first and third piece. Wonder who the second piece will be.
  25. The Souhan burn was especially cruel.
