  1. Fine. Call up Zack Granite instead.
  2. They aren't limited to one way. Perhaps that was their attitude and it lead to this disaster. They haven't drafted and developed pitching, I'm not disputing that, but it seems other competitive teams have been able to acquire it through different means, and not just signing 9 figure FA contracts. On the flip side, 9 of the 13 everyday guys are homegrown.
  3. And Santiago is a stretch to count as it was a bad salary dump. The lack of talent acquired through trade is by far the biggest problem of Ryan's tenure. It amplifies other aspects that weren't great but probably aren't worthy of the scorn they receive either.
  4. And drafted players (in original org) will skew heavily towards everyday guys over starting pitchers.
  5. Very fair, but the fact there is a new front office gives me some hope. They've started conservative, but I anticipate an aggressive push for talent acquisition over the next year and a half.
  6. I just use fangraphs and click through. I did a quick and dirty search last year, average is less than 2 per team.
  7. A lot of teams have no internally developed starters. For example, the most recent World Series Champion.
  8. Or try more credible analogies. The violence in baseball has really been on the downswing for years, and there are very few serious situations anymore.
  9. There is much to criticize about the Twins development, but neither of these strike me as all that convincing. The total amount of players on the roster drafted by the team is actually pretty comparable to most teams around the league. But what has really killed the franchise during the last 6 years is they have been so bad at talent acquisition from means other than the draft. They were so mediocre in their trades, not much for free agent signings or waiver pickups, very few of the sign and flip type deals. And for all the hot takes floating around about Buxton's development, I never thought I'd see that he wasn't rushed enough.
  10. Did you just compare that video to MMA?
  11. Yes. This is what I meant by escalate. Very little there. Headhunting is very rare.
  12. I would argue it very rarely escalates, 2-3 times a year. That's why we hear about them.
  13. Generally my opinion too. I would have liked to have seen them go big and bust their budget like many other teams did. But failing that, I expected them to spend their full budget each year. If they wanted to trade off between going big sometimes and spreading it out others, I had no strong preference. It seems they generally spent their budget each year, or at least got really close, so I don't really have any huge complaints.
  14. The first point is definitely true and usually the way it ends, and not much is heard about it. The second part might be true, but Machado is from Florida. I think overall baseball has down a pretty good job of cracking down on this, or perhaps the players just aren't as into it as they used to be. There are fewer and fewer incidents each year, which is good, but I'm not certain it can ever 100% be taken out. These are humans, playing competitively at a high level over a long grind of a season. Even if something is an accident like the Machado slide there can be lingering bad blood and it seems to work if there is some sort of an outlet. I generally say hit him in the ass the next time up and move on. Headhunting 2 days later is another story.
  15. Berrios is likely to get the next start when they go to 5. I just don't see how Gibson going to AAA does anything. If they had clear alternatives they might have a quicker trigger, but they are probably better off seeing if he can right himself.
  16. Leaving Santiago's hot start aside, losing a pitcher to injury and having a young pitcher struggling out of the gate are entirely predictable outcomes. To back them up with only vets on minor league contracts is asking for a disaster significantly larger than the one currently facing the Twins. The only way releasing Santiago would be defensible is if they signed another free agent to replace him, but as you said the free agent market was not great. That said, I do respect the willingness to stand by a position even if it doesn't look correct at the moment. Much more honest than, say, advocating for playing the young guys and then lamenting the lack of a good backup plan when they struggle.
  17. Right, my mistake. I think he would have to be knocked out in the second inning to even entertain the thought of not starting him after that.
  18. And he's going to start on Saturday. They won't give up on him this early unless he's injured.
  19. Sending Gibson to AAA would be pointless. I wouldn't be opposed to him going to the bullpen to get right, but the Twins aren't exactly bursting at the seams with good replacements. And Hughes might be even worse.
  20. I'm not surprised teams are emphasizing club seats and suites. He doesn't mention it, but Target Field definitely benefitted from a land constraint in the construction. Doesn't seem to suffer quite as much from the same problems he cites in other stadiums.
  21. Do you find yourself often getting excited about who the mop up guy in the pen is?
  22. Boshers down, O'Rourke to the 60 day dl. Needed someone to eat some innings backing up Hughes.
  23. Good list. I'd add some combo of Chargois/Burdi/Melotakis come up and pitch well. I'm more shocked in the short term by Gibson's collapse, but definitely agree that Buxton is in a class of his own for overall buzzkill.
