  1. I, for one, am well aware of this. After all, it starts in my pocket first. My understanding from the last few months is that 16 years is the magic number where it becomes a verifiable trend. Of course, I'm sure the right to reserve it for 17, 18, 19, or whatever makes the argument work is also in play.
  2. Damn...that sounds fantastic.
  3. I sense a lot of regret coming in that case.....
  4. Very true, the Twins have also never had a problem plugging young players in. I think it is very important to point out that it isn't what we perceive as risky, but what the Twins perceive as risky that is at issue. And I absolutely believe the Twins feel there is little risk in dealing for prospects, but feel there is significant risk in trading their own.
  5. Its unlikely but a few things to make this team fun to watch wold be nice.
  6. I'm curious...if Perkins is dealt (and hopefully guys like Burton and Fien too if the value is there) could we go the aggressive route and just plant Tonkin in the closers role right away? I know he's been flying through the system, but I'd kind of like them to go with someone young the second half of this season. Then next year slide a veteran in there and hope in the first half they can generate some saves-related value.
  7. I would have considered that risky, but I'm not sure Ryan did. I think he was confident in Hicks being able to play. So I would grant they take some risk in deals where they move established talent for prospects. But it's not as simple as money, because they also have never made any significant trades (especially at the deadline) that netted them an established star for prospects. So it's not as easy as saying "well they make risky trades" because even that isn't really true. It's very selective as well.
  8. One might have said the same thing about Ryan's decision on Miguel Cabrera way back when. People are making this about just Gonzalez, but this particular situation is symptomatic of 15 or so years of timid behavior towards risks. You bring up a lot of good points, but I think you missed Reusse's point. The Twins, regardless of resources available, regardless of talent available, regardless of team needs, and regardless of the avenue (FA, international FA, trading for established players) - just do not take risks under Ryan. That's what "timid" means. They have been totally unwilling to go outside of the narrow box they have put themselves in for team building and take chances. I think we have almost 15 years of evidence supporting this claim. It's not a reach at all.
  9. Would've been better if you absolutely adored alliteration. But who's counting?
  10. Well that's because you're being a nattering nabob of negativity. Clearly.
  11. I refuse to accept your reasonable alternative!
  12. Wow, I'm surprised with not having pitched for a couple months that Meyer is at 38. I think I'm going to go buy my Rosario jersey now, if nothing else for the power of positive thinking regarding our future middle infield.
  13. I'm going to guess Baltimore is the team that goes after him. They can mix Roberts in with the defense. Plus, I'm just not that sure the Yanks are really contenders.
  14. I would argue the TWins don't need any help with that. Three putrid seasons that have ranged from awful to unbearable to watch probably accomplishes more than anything Pat Reusse can write.
  15. He hasn't pitched for two years in part because he tried to escape. That is a flimsy reason. Plenty of time to stretch him back out to be ready next year. You were looking for anything to grab on to in your rush to defend. Gonzalez may not be a good fit but pretty soon a strategy devoid of taking risks will catch up to you. THat is the heart of Reusse's point and it is dead on, blind allegiance or no.
  16. For every entertaining, off-the-cuff thing he has said he's said something hateful and stupid. He was consistently voted one of the worst managers to play for and his most notable success came in what was one of the flukiest collection of career years and surprise performances in recent memory. Sorry, but I don't find him cute, funny, or particularly good at his job.
  17. One guy wasn't going to fix 3-4 integral young pieces under-performing.
  18. I really hope that huge mistake doesn't affirm the risk-averse in our FO. I hadn't considered that.
  19. That's what I was implying earlier, but much clunkier. This is the most baffling part.
  20. I'm ok with that. If you don't like one guy at a Sano-like level, then it's ok to spread out your resources. However, there is no such excuse when it comes to Gonzalez.
  21. Quite true, but nevertheless he did it. So you can't dismiss credit IMO. Your nerd in the corner analogy was amusing but I'm sure it will be totally lost on a bunch of guys who focus on stats and math when discussing sports.
  22. All those years of "play second, bat second" were just the red carpet for Rosario. I can get behind that.
  23. The Twins aggressively expanded their international scouting base under Ryan, which I still think was one of his best, most unheralded moves under his first tenure. I think part of their aggressiveness is going after their guys no matter how they are ranked nationally.
  24. Under Ryan the drafting and scouting teams show aggressiveness, but the timidity starts to shine through when he is directly in control. It could certainly be true the Twins scouts just don't like these guys, but its hard not to doubt money is a factor when it shouldn't be.
  25. To Reusse's larger point, I think one of my biggest concerns with Ryan taking back the GM role was that Smith was brilliantly aggressive in the international market. He went after a lot of players that his scouts liked and it was instrumental in the organization's resurgence. In particular, his decision to go heavy on Miguel Sano made up for one of Ryan's most notable mistakes in his tenure (Cabrera). One hope I had was that if there was any place Ryan was going to be more aggressive spending his money it would be in trusting his international scouting. So far that hasn't been the case and I think Reusse is right to suggest that we should be demonstrating more aggressiveness.
