  1. How many years must a young hitter consecutively post an OPS of .800 before it's worthwhile to augment the team around them? What Moore did was anticipate and trust the talent on his team. Why would any GM act in any other way?
  2. You call me out for that small distinction after you comped Shields to Cliff Lee? Cmon, you know what I was saying. He wasn't a rental and the dollar sign on the price tag was EXTREMELY reasonable. As for "wasting" it - they're in the playoff hunt right now. I wouldn't call that wasting anything.
  3. Not at all. You're minimizing this by suggesting there is some kind of regular market for aces in trade. Shields is an ace with several years of affordable team control (who pitched for a pretty good team) who isn't aging or possessing an albatross of a contract. So your Lee/Arcia comp really doesn't work here. And, many teams that are young or trying to make that next step are doing so because all of their talent is in the majors and their trade chips aren't significant enough to pull such a deal. I have a feeling your tune on how easy it is to acquire top-flight pitching might change in a few years when we end up needing it and struggle to find it.
  4. Completely agree, there are some intriguing names on that list that might be able to put things back together. I'd probably be higher on Ubaldo Jimenez than many.
  5. Well, other than the availability of such a starter in trade and a sufficient piece to move to get him. I'd argue that's a whole heckuva lot more than "nothing".
  6. Here's the part of that you missed. Cmb said he didn't like the price and the injury history with JJ. How do his local ties eliminate either of these issues? They don't, yet people continue to say the first (I don't like....) but then say "but maybe since he's from here....." and the implication is very clear. I don't deny his ties may help the Twins avoid wildly overspending to sign him. What I deny is that his ties here are going to make the contract he may command less risky. Maybe we get lucky and he gets the Marcum treatment and doesn't command a long-term contract. Unfortunately, that scenario doesn't exactly encourage me from experience either. That's the real problem no matter what FAs we examine for being a good fit.
  7. Can we please just do away with this notion now? Johnson may indeed come here and his ties may indeed help that, but there is always the implication that he'll come cheaper or at a less risky price. The price is always going to be too steep and too risky if you're looking for "safe" deals. It's more about who you choose to roll the dice with.
  8. I'd shell out the very risky dollars it would take on Johnson and Lincecum and hope that one of the two of them finds their old self.
  9. I disagree...I mentioned Josh Johnson and how putrid he's been. Just ask my fantasy team.
  10. I, for one, am shocked that a discussion of team finances and payroll came up in a topic about free agency this offseason. Shocked. I came to this thread expecting a discussion on Sano's batting stance and was just blown away.:shoot:
  11. Well, there has been a similar circumstance. And an overwhelming tendency of behavior. Can we know for sure....no. But most reasonable people can come to the same conclusion about what was most likely to have happened.
  12. This quote is incredibly confusing then: They went from an organization in shambles in 2011 to probably the #1 farm system in baseball. Now what big change happened two years ago? "Shambles" seems strong - BA had them at 12 going into 2011. The quote above implies Ryan gets the credit for that with no effort to mention Smith's work setting that up. They both deserve a lot of credit (and a lot of blame) for where our organization is now.
  13. To the point of the thread - this is a pretty motley group of FAs. One of the guys most of us here like (and I'd still take a chance on) is Josh Johnson who has been brutal the last few weeks. As teams get more money in their coffers the next few years, I imagine we'll see resignings happen before they even hit FA. At this time last year Hamels and Cain were still impending FAs for example.
  14. How is that any different than you utterly ignoring the work Smith did to turn the system around? Ryan has done a very nice job continuing to push the system in the right direction, but he is hardly the sole reason and the truly ridiculous claim is to try and give him all the credit. I'd argue Smith is still more responsible than he is considering some of the elite talent he brought in he did without having to use top 5 picks in the draft.
  15. Before we worry about moving anyone, anywhere....maybe Dozier should keep it together for the next two months and the first two months of next year. Then we have a decision to make. While he has clearly shown the ability to field the position, we're a long way from relying on him to hit at the position so much that we should worry about where we move one of our most exciting prospects.
  16. Kab just crushed it. That's exactly the point. You aren't going to find players his age for nothing but cash commitments in FA but for extremely rare exceptions. Cuban or other international FAs that fall through the cracks like this have to be a place we are willing to take some risks if we aren't willing to in normal FA.
  17. one of the common unwritten rules is about bunting with a lead. We see BS like this all the time with guys getting thrown at for bunting as if its bad form. Yeah, a good deal of this is Garza being a pissant for not being able to field bunts.....but I'd argue tht is exactly how every single unwritten rule gets started.
  18. It indicates more the teams he has played for. If there is an unwritten rule against bunting in a one run game - my dog can fly. The problem with unwritten rules is that they are basically vague BS that jerks who can't handle being bested use to justify their tantrums/stupidity.
  19. Yet another spat over players not liking someone else beating them well within the written rules because it violated some nonsense. The whole unwritten rules thing is easily my most hated part of baseball.
  20. It appears all that Moore bashing may have been a bit presumptive. KC fans have to be really excited about the way their team is playing. If not for two similar streaks in the division they'd be in a playoff position. Still only a few out of a WC.
  21. This new CBA didn't make tanking any more or less effective. We are just in a cycle with a lot of savvy small markets having success - they tend to be more conservative with the assets they trust which is why you see less player movement. High draft picks are nice, but the Twins have to add talent when they can. Waiting for the stars to align is an expression we use more flippantly, but when you look at it literally you get a more realistic picture of what it means: it can take a very, very, very long time. And it certainly doesn't happen frequently enough to start making baseball decisions on that philosophy. I doubt even Ryan believes any such thing, he's just diametrically opposed to spending money outside a self-selected set of parameters.
  22. You are right about Smith and we may still have him as GM had Ramos' injury not derailed a Cliff Lee deal, but I am not a believer in the "all in" trade philosophy. I think the Rauch, Pavano, etc type of deals are wiser, cheaper, and ultimately more productive moves. though Ryan has even shown hesitation on those moves historically. So not sure it's all that comforting a thought.
  23. Yeah I struggled for an apt description, but looks like you got the jist. I dothe same thing in fantasy ball - hawk for mid 20s guys with a new opportunity. Its borderline criminal how much room for opportunity the Twins have and the non-talents or aging no-values they are using it on.
  24. This is satire. Good satire, but satire.
  25. Chomping at the bit.
