  1. Actually, "most" of the time he doesn't. He just goes on some really good short stretches to keep himself alive as a starter. There simply isn't a statistic in existence that verifies this claim. (Unless you revise it to say - "he actually looks like a major league capable hitter when he's in the box against lefties") He was a first round pick. If your first round pick doesn't have promise - it was a bad pick. But his promise also stems from his herculian stretch last year too. So yes, there was reason to hope he could become a viable part of the team as a starter. He has completely obliterated that notion this year. Your entire premise is flawed. Just because there is a lot going wrong doesn't minimize that he's one of the parts going wrong. No one is claiming Plouffe sunk the 2013 season. No one is making him the "Most Wanted" criminal for dashing our hopes. No one is saying our Albert Pujols in the making went David McCarthy. People are just irked that this guy that tantalized them with hope now infuriates them with every inept play and at-bat. It's perfectly justifiable.
  2. Some others handled this, but to put it succinctly - he represents lost opportunity. He was one of the guys we had to hope took a step forward and he didn't. That's going to make his failures hurt a bit more.
  3. Better not to ask.
  4. Personally, I hope the Pohlads do become more involved in the spending on players. It may be the only way we see Terry pushed off the cliff to actually do it.
  5. The Twins have the 6th least errors. Still pretty good, and driven largely by a very good middle infield, but probably not a good measure of the team's overall defense.
  6. Very true, which is why I'm hoping we very aggressively pursue Tanaka or Abreu.
  7. I've thought that parts of the last draft and next years were going to be the ideal trade candidates - not the guys currently slotted to arrive at the same time. Just to throw in one more reason Rosario shouldn't be among the group considered for trade. Oh, and for Dozier - I'm guessing the Twins just let him ride out a successful season at 2B and worry about SS next spring. I hope they give him a shot at it there again, it would be a huge boon for the team if he could hold it down and Rosario is legit.
  8. He asked, other than Sano: Did they go big internationally, before or since You then proceeded to list Sano as part of the group that proved this wrong. The other two - Pinto and Arcia - were not "big" international signings by any imagination. They were good ones, but completely irrelevant to the question asked. It was in reference to spending significant money to bring in players. Instead, you made it about what you want to keep saying, not about what the point actually was.
  9. You missed the entire point of the post you quoted. He is making a valid point about whether this current group has the guts to go big on an international free agent or any other for that matter. It's a legitimate concern that does need to be shown before more talk is going to pass muster. I like quite a few things about the "Twins Way", but like any mantra of how to do things, without perspective it can lead to as many problems as it solves. Chief among them is that this team has gotten far too comfortable promoting from within and being too insular from outside ideas/perspectives.
  10. Awesome! Hopefully both are still utilized, the zany bleacher-like thread is fun to pop in on so hopefully that doesn't lose steam.
  11. Well, yeah, of course he will say that. Time to start revving the PR for retaining season ticket holders. Whether it comes true is another matter entirely.
  12. I'm going to go out on a huge limb, but I don't think Willingham getting hurt tanked our playoff chances. Pretty sad that it's the best Terry has to explain this failed season. I can think of dozens of better "GM-speak" cliches that don't sound half as inane as that.
  13. Dave Martinez is nice, I still think I'm in the Molitor camp. I like what he'd bring to this team that still has some of what the core of the team has been for years (strong fundamentals and smart baseball) but also a lot more aggressiveness in attacking the scoreboard. I would, however, like him to fill his bench and coaching staff with outsiders.
  14. I know sacrifices will have to be made....I'd just like it not to be the first legit middle infield prospect since Knoblauch. At least not until we're 100% sure Dozier and Rosario can't play SS/2B together.
  15. i would suggest the concerns indicated here that the current game thread is already doing this to some degree. I know I haven't bothered a time or two just because I thought it would get lost in the non-baseball chatter.
  16. Thats fair. You're right the camps are pretty divided on him. Personally, I hope they absolutely suck this year with the QB class coming out - this team needs another high pick to fortify QB and a few defensive positions.
  17. To slightly add to this, if you do pop in to comment on a game event it gets lost in the sea of extraneous comments. Maybe, as a testament to this threads remarks on it, the game has two threads - one devoted to bleacher-esque fun and zany antics and another more in the vein of those who fill out stat sheets and are 100% focused on the game. Might help soothe some of the concerns. Just call one "in the bleachers" or something.
  18. Agreed....and I was wrong above. We were up 14-6 by some miracle when he lobbed it to Detroit and they drove to make it 14-13. He almost single handedly turned 17-6 (minimum) into 14-13 with a comically awful pick. Lets be done with excuses is my thing.
  19. Your question is irrelevant to the issue. The percentage number came up in regards to how to set payroll expectations, you are twisting the argument to fit the refrain you have brought to the thread.
  20. Good for him, he has sure earned it.
  21. I'd be upset if they posted less than 40M. They have tht much in saved in payroll this year alone.
  22. The scenario is different, the man making the calls is not. As I said, I think this is far more about Ryan's principles. Guess we will see what kind of flexibility they allow.
  23. Historical trends are pretty compelling. Certainly more so than hypothetical scenario building. I hope it happens, but please don't portray sensible hypotheticals as anything more than that.
  24. I appreciate the effort by Nick, but there were similar arguments to be made last year too. Until we actually do it, skepticism is really the only justifiable position. Frankly, this is more about Ryan's principles than it is about circumstances.
