  1. This just goes to show how infectious Dick Bremer's ideas can be if you listen enough.
  2. The armchair GM: Mogul and OTB are both options for this and I know there are many here that use them. I'm into mogul and could help there if people are interested. My suggestion: more direct prospect observations like jokin posted this week. Maybe have your own prospect scout attending games for a week to get some real nitty-gritty dirt on guys?
  3. While that's true about Ortiz continuing to use all fields, you have to remember how this works in action. It isn't that the Twins didn't let him pull the ball, it's that they asked him to back down on trying to hard to pull with authority. Where you see the spike for Ortiz from 2003 on isn't in how his spray chart looks...it's in how he went from being mostly a line drive hitter with some flyballs to being a balanced flyball/line drive guy. That's where the power surge came from - he was not only turning on balls but he was allowed to unload on them as well. When you're worried about plate coverage and going the opposite way, I can see how that would limit the authority you swing with on inside pitches.
  4. Teaching pitch recognition is just fine! You aren't reworking a swing then, you're just helping the player lay off what they aren't going to hit. Gladden's issue was with them basically deconstructing hitters in order to remake them as slappy all-fields players.
  5. Absolutely, working with pull hitters to drive an outside is fine, just don't rework their bread and butter. The part that Gladden is spot on about is the point that no one is muscling Willingham into being a "spray the ball the other way" guy and nor is the team trying to force Mauer to yank the ball for power. Let a guy be who he is and work to improve that rather than tearing the whole thing down to start over. I think we're seeing that with Arcia - they aren't telling him to tone down his swing, but they are trying to position his hands better and working on pitch recognition. That, to me, is perfect. 10 years ago we might be trying to force Arcia to slap the ball for singles to left. It's been a welcome change.
  6. Plus, who cares? It's at the expense of Willingham right now, as it should be.
  7. Not only that, but could Brian Dozier increase his average by 40 points? Sure, he might also cut his homeruns in half. Or worse. Let a guy do what he does well and help on the things Brock mentioned.
  8. I think Bruno has changed some of that mentality. The problem Gladden is speaking to isn't that you can't help a hitter become more complete....it's the mentality that I think was here at one point that taught that approaching every at-bat with an "up the middle or opposite field" mindset. And, I think, was punitive to hitters that didn't take that mindset. I think that was harmful for some hitters that came through our system at the time. I've personally seen the emphasis decrease substantially over the last decade. Particularly under Vavra and now Bruno. It's a change for the better IMO.
  9. Sorry Chi...I'm not longer a Chicagoan. Took my lovely wife and moved back to southern MN. I get down there a lot so I don't have food withdrawal too badly.
  10. He also talked about that in the context of Kenny Vargas on the Judd and Mackey show today. I think his point is not to force someone to be something they're not, he credited the Red Sox for allowing Ortiz to be himself as one of the reasons behind his breakout. Just an interesting perspective from one of the Twins' voices.
  11. He said much the same on 1500 today saying something to the effect of: "You can bet no one has told Willingham to go the other way" as a reason to just let some kids be what they are. Is this something he's aware of in-house or is this just his observations much like a fan?
  12. The pressures of MLB hasn't stopped the Twins from keeping Arcia up as he's flailing. My biggest issue last year with Gibson and now again here is the rationales offered by the Twins. Mostly because there is nothing rational about their rationales. I hope they are making some kind of sense to Meyer behind the scenes (how I have no clue) ....because all the messages being sent by the team's words and actions would seriously irritate me if I were him.
  13. You mean via waivers we didn't pick up an unblemished future superstar! I'm aghast!
  14. Exactly. The way I see it we're basically rebooting the Hicks development process, so let's treat it that way.
  15. I'm pretty sure next to insufferable in the dictionary is the picture of the morning crew in question. Dick and Bert have their flaws....but their flaws could be FAR worse.
  16. And yet our offense is littered with guys that AA pitchers were fanning at alarming rates and up they came! I just don't get that double standard.
  17. It's bad baseball and the weather is beautiful, I've tuned out. With some good call-ups they might get my attention back.
  18. I'm a little excited because at least this wasn't a burned out former Twin with no upside. Baby steps.
  19. I'm sorry, but are you really leaving anyone the ability to answer this question or is this just an exercise in stubborn skepticism?
  20. Awesome so we can expect him to be up by....oh nevermind. http://schoolx.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/sigh.jpg
  21. Hicks will see plenty of fringe MLB starting pitchers in AAA, that's where he needs to go next. We know he can't hit MLB pitching so there is no need to run him out there for another couple hundred at-bats to watch weak contact and flailing from the left side. Let's get him right - that's so much more important for the long term.
  22. Exactly, Brandon Moss was a flyer by the A's. The Twins should try out more of these guys for lesser roles and hope for good things. Especially when they aren't in the way of anyone.
