  1. If you want it to be that way, shouldn't we write rules to that effect then? If baseball wants to insist on that "classy" model, then enforce it fairly and at an impartial level. Write actual rules - black and white, no butt hurt emotions. Right now your so-called "classier" system throws fastballs at faces so that someone doesn't celebrate their accomplishment. That doesn't really compute with classy.
  2. This is a good post, but I would say that there is still plenty of celebrating, fist pumping, and chest thumping in the NBA and the NFL. What both leagues have cut down on is the degree to which it happens in certain situations. In contrast, baseball allows nearly none of that to happen without retribution. The only time it appears to be allowed via the unwritten rules is walk-off celebrations. Everything else is frowned upon by threat of a baseball in the teeth. So there is room for the league to go further towards the two leagues you just listed too.
  3. Outright disrespect shouldn't be tolerated any more in baseball than it is other places. If a player does something deliberately to hurt another player, they should be penalized. But good for Harper to point out how much of this stuff is just about some guys being too easily butthurt about getting beat. You don't like that the guy fist-pumped during their trot? Don't give up the homerun. Let guys play with a personality and have fun.
  4. Yeah, they swapped Sansa for Alayne. I don't think that scene was handled well at all and it's easily the biggest choice the show has made that I question. I also understand where they are coming from. Book Sansa has basically spent several hundred pages brooding and doing nothing. You can sort of do that in a book, but if you basically have a character doing nothing and being no significant part of the story for hours on end in a television show, it becomes pretty obvious and problematic. That doesn't justify their handling of her character, but Martin's writing of some characters made the TV version really difficult to handle. (Though, for me, reading an endless slog of nothing happening wasn't much easier either)
  5. Yeah, the agent is pretty clear he's speaking with direct influence from his client. I'm not sure why we're trying to give Nolasco a pass here.
  6. Something like that - after there is a forced slash to college tuition rates. I'm ok with substantial subsidies to public universities too...provided they slash their spending significantly and agree to go back to some rigorous academic. I think one needs to demonstrate both need and ability to be granted federal aid. We need to go back to a time when you could pay most or all of your tuition while working during college. It really wasn't as long ago as so many seem to think.
  7. Sorry, I was piling on to your point, I didn't mean to come across as disagreeing. Not all European economies are collapsing. Germany is thriving and Bernie has actually used Germany as an example for what our college system should look like. Except, in Germany, at around 4th grade you get put on whatever ultimate track your intelligence seems best suited for. So for a large segment of their population, they don't even entertain the idea that college is appropriate, much less pay for it for everyone.
  8. High school sports are generally funded through participation by the athletes, so I'm not sure that's really true. I don't mind athletics being tied in with academics necessarily, but the current relationship in colleges is toxic to say the least. Sports have become one of the biggest billboards for student recruitment. So schools funnel money there hoping the next dumb kid who'll take 6 years to get through will join their school rather than their rival.
  9. Do I understand why they are? Sure, the government gave them a huge, juicy trough to eat out of an they are gorging themselves. Ultimately the problem falls on a really terrible solution. And Mike, it's not just gyms. Everything colleges spend those gorged out tuition rates on are advertisements to bring another opportunity to feed at the trough. It's all one giant scheme and actual education has become worse than a second thought, it's an after-thought. Bernie is doubling down on that mentality. Europe has cheap education because it also has ridiculously high standards for getting there - not a free pass for anyone that can print their name on a FAFSA.
  10. Baseball has priced my family out. We were once season ticket holders even.
  11. I'm getting closer and closer to just not reading it. I probably will out of hopes that the quality has returned to where it was in the first three books. But given the writing slog it's been, I'm guessing it'll be more like the last two with never-ending plots about Quentyn Martell, a fake Aegon, and what everyone's freaking dinner looks like. The show has made a lot of missteps, but the narrative is likely going to be much tighter and more intriguing when all is said and done. (Assuming we ever even see a novelized conclusion of the series)
  12. I think the only way Sweeney or Quentin makes it is in addition to Arcia and Santana. And I just don't think we'll carry that thin of a pitching staff to start.
  13. Yeah, I don't know if it's that or, if over time, he's actually started to believe it. Either way the result is the same - everyone acts like it's real.
  14. Yes, Sanders has some broader support, but the vast majority of his momentum is from the under 30 crowd. Those of us that have felt the real burn of liberal attempts to cheapen college love the idea of suddenly losing hundreds of dollars a month in student loan payments. I mean, hell, talk about an economic stimulus package right there. The problem is that "free college" let's the real culprits off the hook. In fact, it emboldens them to continue the practice of gouging young adults for tens of thousands in mediocre education. So while my monthly bills would love a dose of Sanders, I prefer someone who might actually work to real solutions rather than look for easy ones that generate enthusiasm. It's that sort of thinking that got us in this mess in the first place.
  15. I think it probably is a symptom of that, but Chuck and everyone around him continues to treat it like an actual, real allergy. And by sheer force of personality and the respect people have for him I think a lot of people still believe it is a real thing. Jimmy got a reality check he couldn't deny by that doctor turning on the bed and showing that it's all in Chuck's head, not an actual physical effect. Most people aren't privvy to that.
  16. It doesn't hurt to keep Sanders around, but I'm not sure it's really making that much of an impact. Everyone still sees Hillary as the only possible outcome of that election. Mostly because Sanders hasn't done anything to reverse his all-white voting base.
  17. They only thing they showed was that it clearly wasn't real. Beyond that we don't know any particular cause.
  18. Mike said "is that all you got?" - Just to make sure the cops saw what Tuco was up to. I don't remember from Breaking Bad, but when Tuco is introduced, did they mention a prison sentence at all? I'm waiting for Jimmy to snap and call Chuck out for his "disease" being a total fraud.
  19. Good to hear, I think this is one of the future "new wave" avenues of sports. Maintaining the health of your investments has always been a bit under-emphasized statistically, I hope the Twins are out leading on this issue.
  20. Looks like no flip. Maybe he's warming up. I hope he flips on every home run and doesn't care one damn bit about people whining about it.
  21. I hope it was an epic flip. Gotta get ready for prime time.
  22. That's a smart way to scout Ben.
  23. On some things, yes. But particularly on defense you need the less common plays to really tell what a guy can or can't do. Your average LF in 6 games probably isn't going to have an opportunity to show you much at all unless you get lucky. A lot of the defensive statistics take this into account as well, it's those uncommon plays that separate the "great" from the "good" from the "ok" from the "is your DH spot flexible"
  24. I appreciate that you try to do that, I worry sometimes how high the standards are for many scouts. I worry even more about those guys that are basically leaching off of scout's work. Even your standard is still a very small sample, so while your observations are certainly helpful, it's still something I'd take with a large grain of salt.
  25. I think it's highly unlikely that it's unlikely. But, I will say, a lot of my opinions may be colored by trying to vocally convince myself that voting for Hillary might not be so bad.
