  1. Ah, it's hard sometimes to keep track of who is actually defending this stuff. It is similar though, it's taking out someone defenseless with no net-gain to anyone if you do. Baseball, at least, has finally caught up to penalizing that sort of thing.
  2. If you missed Jon Oliver's take on Trump last night, you should google it. It's worth every second.
  3. Never have I heard that. Ever. Not even in jest. Guys are taught against that because punters are protected and the penalties are harsh even for the slightest bump. There are most definitely shady practices in all sports (football has more than a few, Talib was putting on a demonstration of them in the Super Bowl for instance) but at least in football you are starting from a point of physical play. The takeout slide is ridiculously ineffective at anything but hurting people. There is nothing "tough" about it. It's a dirty play and should be penalized as such, not encouraged as part of how you play the game.
  4. I don't think so. At least from my experience they stay pretty mum about that stuff. They were trumpeting the "Plouffe is not for sale" sign as soon as was humanly possible and haven't wavered from it.
  5. How does karate kicking a prone infielder make you tough? How does throwing at someone's head for some alleged slight make you tough?
  6. I figure an armed classroom will have a direct effect on my grading practices.
  7. Sure, but I think you just kind of made my point. So long as it remains Trump and both Cruz and Rubio...there's almost no chance the same guy wins both Ohio and Florida. Unless that guy is Trump.
  8. Except we're using advanced polling (polling that has largely been reflective of the results, if not underselling Trump if anything) and a variety of other measures. If you want to see the reality setting in, just listen to the Republicans scrambling to deal with this. They seem to think it's all but inevitable. And it's also not true that we saw anything like this in 2012. Cruz/Santorum are similar, but in all the other early states Trump is outperforming Romney.
  9. Look, there are a lot of people way better at statistically projecting these things than me that disagree. Here too. And we already saw the StoneyBrook model. I don't like it, the guy is a whack job, but things are looking his way in an overwhelming fashion right now.
  10. Another quote in the STrib today that he was never on the market. You could read that as TR read the market beforehand or that he just held on to Plouffe for loyalty, but can we please just all accept that Plouffe was never shopped? It's been made as plainly clear as humanly possible.
  11. Sure, but his 82 is still 65 more than anyone else. He's got five times what anyone else has and he's running away with primaries. If Super Tuesday goes the way it looks right now, he's basically got this thing sewn up.
  12. Let me say at the outset that I don't like the conclusion I'm starting to come to, but at some point you just have to accept what you don't like. Let's start out with maybe the most important point. We're talking about primaries - the insiders game. If there is anything Trump shouldn't be winning it's primaries. He's an outsider dominating the insider game. That alone should call any assumptions to be questioned. Then look at the exit polling, Trump had even support in Nevada 47/45 in the male/female demo. It was 36/29 in South Carolina. His strongest demographics are 35+ - a group far more likely to get out and vote for Republicans. Despite bashing latinos he overwhelmingly took that element in Nevada. In South Carolina he pulled in twice as many independents than anyone else and roughly half the self-described independents who voted in Nevada. I think people are paying attention and I think he is tapping into something...strange. We'll see how things go, but if he can win the Republican vote and bring in enough moderates - he can win this. And if you had told me that 3 months ago I'd have dismissed it. But here we are and I don't think he's going away easily.
  13. Yeah, they chose that character because the budget didn't allow for anyone significant so they picked out some D-list X-character instead. Hard to believe they made that movie with 58M, that's a helluva profit margin.
  14. Right, Bernie has one state sewn up and Clinton has 7 or 8. Super Tuesday will just cement what Dave and I were saying before - without at least some of the black vote, Bernie just isn't a viable candidate.
  15. Curry has a long time to cement his legacy....but he is well on his way. My god I hate David Kahn.
  16. I didn't care for the Watchmen adaptation, but this move just isn't right on many levels. The marketing is Michael Bayish, the plot as we know it is nonsensical (could redeem), and it just seems to be focused on being big rather than good. It was well behind Civil War, Apocalypse, and Deadpoolon my must-watch list - all of which seem to be staying true to what they are in the effort to make a good movie. And of those, Deadpool was a righteously devoted film to the character and turned into a unique movie who earned every ounce of the success it has seen. I just get the exact opposite vibe from this movie.
  17. Hillary blowing out Bernie pretty much seals this thing. Also, the Iowa handgun law is also the most preposterous thing ever. Read about it if you haven't.
  18. I think there may be even more Trump supporters among non-primary voters.
  19. At some point "tough" became synonymous with dirty and cowardly in baseball. I'm all for toughness, but baseball left that behind years ago. Now it's just phony nonsense.
  20. I understand the desire to believe Trump will get destroyed in the general (at one point I believed it too) but that looks less the case every day.
  21. So Keith Law was teaching a math class?
  22. It looks like a near certainty at this point barring a shocking turn Tuesday.
  23. Yes, it was. What guy, on his own, slides like that? Is that how you were taught? Freeze your video at 56 seconds or 1:14 or 1:16 or 1:18 or after where he lands on his back and tell me that slide is legit. If you truly think that's a legit slide I'm not sure what to say. He's CLEARLY sticking his right leg out to maim Kang and break up the double play. The same inane, non-sensical thing so many guys are taught to do because it's gritty or tough or some other nonsense. All that slide accomplishes in a vacuum is hurting someone. And that's exactly the outcome that happened.
  24. But that's only part of it. It's not like the rule says "as long as you can touch the bag anything goes". The rule expects runners to touch the bag along with several other things to be a legal slide. So yeah, I could care less if he can touch the bag if his intent is still to maim an infielder. The mentality has to change.
  25. I want to believe that Chi...but I've wanted to believe that for a long time.
