  1. I can agree with that, but sometimes you have to encourage people to transition into these positions too. It's not accidental that throughout the major sports the people in positions of power are still largely white. It's a country-club sort of thing and it does have to be broken to allow people like Rudy and Eddie and many others like them to have a chance to show they are the best people.
  2. Yeah, the Kingsmoot needed to be abbreviated, but that was a bit too much. Honestly though, isn't arriving with a fleet of ships a more convincing argument than a magic horn? Euron, as a character in the books, is a host of silly issues. He's basically a sexy magic viking pirate. But it was nice to see someone who was a genuinely good person die a heroic death that means something. It sucks what Bran did to him to make that happen, but in the end we saw Hodor take on an army of evil and win. That's refreshing.
  3. I've always taken that to mean he wargs into the dragons to tame and control them. Assuming Jon and Dany ride a dragon, he might warg the third.
  4. You counted on three guys better served to hit 6-7-8 to be your 2-3-5. I'd say that's part of the problem.
  5. I think you are right about Theon. I thought it was a bit abrupt losing the tree and the Crow, but Bran is moving on. It's gotta be Benjen/coldhands that comes to the rescue. I also agree that the Nights King could be a Stark. The question is what does Bran alter in the past to help win the war?
  6. This is where I think hindsight goes too far. You don't abandon contention because you think it's a mirage. And you don't deal your best players because you think they might go south. That's operating our of fear.
  7. Projecting a 28 year old to be in full decline in two years is just obtuse. Making another Denard Span trade, while somewhat defensible in principle, seems like a silly thing to base your argument on given the results of it so far. Pierzyski was dealt because of this guy named Mauer, not because the team sold high. So, again, a bad example. Dozier had no one ready to take over for him, Polanco was at least a year away. Now, had Dozier continued to be good until now, in the middle of a terrible season, you'd be right. But last year? No. That's just not a defensible way of running a team.
  8. That episode was intense. And now I only have more questions about Bran and his role in all of this. Is his importance to the Three-eyed Raven and the story is that he is a powerful enough warg to transcend time and space? The Tower of Joy and now Hodor suggest that is a very different capability for him. Seems we may still get that Northern Conspiracy angle.
  9. The rest of the team was not years behind Dozier. Sano, Buxton, Berrios, and many others were within 2 years of joining a guy you still had 4 years of control on. You don't deal him. If you constantly deal everyone who is good waiting for the perfect window of everyone joining at the same time - you'll NEVER find that window. That's just not realistic.
  10. For me, the Twins FO has little to do with this issue. I thought at the time, and continue to now, that the extension was totally unnecessary, but the issues with Dozier are about Dozier. (Though, it'd help if the damn manager hit him where he belonged)
  11. Donaldson did exactly what you should do - he punished them for being butthurt idiots in the first inning. I'm a Twins fan, but I liked seeing that.
  12. Look, you won't find someone who has been more doubtful about Dozier than me, but when you have multiple yeas of team control left on a player who busts out like that, you don't just deal him at the first sign of success. It sends a terrible message to your team and it's just a bad way to operate. Sell high is what you do with rentals, older players, and guys with waning team control. Dozier was a guy to keep around. That's precisely why his second half last year, and start this year, have been so concerning. He should be a key cog.
  13. But you implied more than that. Even if they weren't contending, Dozier was in a position with his team control and his position that you don't trade that player. He's a guy you could have planned to build around if he had maintained his production. The team had plenty of time to wait Dozier out to see what he would do as he progressed, but dealing him there (contending or not) is silly. And it's a silly criticism. We have plenty of fair and reasonable things to criticize. We don't have to go batty.
  14. Perhaps that should have happened more when they are rebuilding, but you don't do that while you are contending (flukey month or not) with your best player.
  15. I don't think the a Twins should have extended Dozier, but I don't fault them for not "selling high". If you constantly do that you'll never play at a high level. They were right (and are still right) to be trying to help him contribute. But extending him, batting him first, and continuing to pretend there isn't something very wrong - those I find to be mistakes.
  16. They've been eerily similar in production for the last 500 ABs or so. I like Dozier, seems like a good guy and he's had some special moments, but yeesh.
  17. My only complaint about dickbert is their outright rejection of anything in new-wave statistics. I'm not real high on WAR but I understand how it can be valuable. Provus is a really good announcer, I wish he had an equally good color guy working with him. But I wish Dick or Bert were a little more progressive in their analysis.
  18. I actually like us giving Grossman time over someone like Murphy or Mastro. When you're rebuilding (and we are) taking a risk on a AAAA player to put it together is something I will always endorse. My problem with this is characterizing two games of production as a "reward" and stating it is already a definitive course of action for Ryan to take in the future. It's baffling to draw any conclusions from two games. I like the approach, but Ryan should know better than to invest so much into such limited success. Or perhaps this explains a few other moves in recent history?
  19. Well yeah, he's only got 162 futile at-bats! We need at least another two to three hundred this year to make a determination. Afterall, last year happened in some other dimension that stops being counted the moment the season ends. The story is out on this guy - pitch him up and pitch him outside and he'll get himself out.
  20. Right, the problem is that there aren't enough minority people getting on the track towards management/front office jobs. It probably starts with hiring more of them in entry level front office positions and at the lower minor league levels.
  21. What bugs me about that comment isn't the back-patting, it's the fact that he feels the move has paid off after two games. How about: "We heard about Grossman and have kept our eye on him. We hope he can show us more of what he has the first two games, but we're a long way from where we need to be even if he continues to contribute" Two solid games doesn't make for a good move, it may still turn out to be one, but we're a long way from being as conclusive as he sounded in that quote.
  22. That quote is real.....wow.
  23. There is a good chance many of these poor performances are players being put it roles/positions they aren't suited for. So it's not just under performance because there are structural problems with the roster.
  24. So the Twins were barking at Donaldson about decorum? *Sigh*
