  1. I was thinking about this discussion and I think we glossed over a very real problem for the Democrats. Yes, they are backed into an ugly corner right now on this issue. But they got here by getting their asses handed to them at so many local and state levels that their options out of that corner have been thoroughly restrained. They handcuffed themselves for years by focusing on D.C. rather than drumming up the kind of focus and dedication to local races. And those losses have added up over time. Yes, the Republicans are playing dirty, but incompetence by Democrats (and self-inflicted in-fighting and some dirty play of their own during Republican opposition) have been complicit. I don't think we help America by eroding the rules of decorum in our government. That's the mentality both parties have used when they are in power and then they whine the second they lose the power to play that game. We didn't always operate that way. We shouldn't operate that way. The ends rarely justify the means, especially if you arm your enemy with those same harsh means for use later.
  2. No! I'm in Red Country! But I assume you blue folks will allow for asylum seekers.....
  3. Yeah, if you take out Donald as a DT and the OLB he is right in line. But the more I look at a few of the recent contracts I think Hunter could've had a shot at 6/100 in FA if he had gone that route. So I see this as good value.
  4. Well, I feel like Vernon's one high sack year was further removed. I can't find a good place to track pressures, so that point may have been overstated. Last three years (Unofficial, I may have missed someone) Jones: 40.5 Mack:36.5 Miller:34.5 Kerrigan:33.5 Griffen: 31.5 Jordan:30.5 Donald:30 Wake:29 Ingram:29 Campbell: 28 Ansah:26.5 Hunter 25.5 Hunter ranks 12th the last three years. He's also the only player who was a rookie in any of those three seasons. And the youngest by several years.
  5. It's a reflection of value however. Have you looked at the other top DEs? Like JPP and Vernon? I'm guessing not. Context is key here. 14.4 for Hunter IS a bargain. If Vernon can get 17, I might be way under projecting Hunter. Vernon got 5/85 with less sack cred, two years older, and less athleticism. Yeah, a bargain.
  6. Ansah: 26.5 sacks the last three years, highest paid DE. Older than Hunter. Hunter last three years: 25.5 sacks. FA would've paid him at least another 10M. Probably more even if he has 8 sacks next year. If he puts up 10-12 that number jumps more.
  7. Considering the implications for women, I hope that is the first thing they try.
  8. He would be a 24 year old FA. And a pass rusher witha pretty good track record. Yes, someone wouldve made him a Top 3 paid DE. We literally just made Cousins number one for QBs and there is no valid statistical case for that either. That's not how FA works, so it's a really poor way to frame the signing.
  9. Losing local elections is what caused most of the other issues too. To borrow some cold war terminology, the nuclear option only results in MAD. I get the stakes are high but don't pretend that suggestion is anything other than an affront to our Republic. That's just what it is.
  10. Win elections, not erode political structures. Escalation of this conduct harms us all sooner or later.
  11. Right, in the NFL the second most valuable commodity is probably pass-rusher. Look no further than the price tag the Saints paid to get one in the draft.
  12. Let's say hunter was a patriot and a free agent this offseason. If the Vikings wanted to sign him they would probably have to go somewhere near 18 million dollars a year. To get him for 14 a year in his prime is a bargain. I know the sack numbers are down but the pressure numbers were still good and this defense needs book end pass rushers. The alternative to not signing this deal is just not palatable IMO. But you're right we do need to see more from him to really make this deal what I think it can be be.
  13. I agree, but this has been an escalating issue. Both parties have taken to overcoming opposition by changing the rules or finding shortcuts rather than working with each. And when you make it ok to change the rules, don't be surprised when the ******* in the room takes the most advantage of it. That is as much a danger to our Republic as anything.
  14. Yes, this is very much true. And another whole tangent we could probably go on. This story really has a lot of ethical dilemmas. None of which are particularly enjoyable to weed through.
  15. You don't know any of this. This is the kind of post about Sano that really bothers me. Buxton too. You know nothing about them as young men, what they think, what they care about, and how they work. Criticizing them as people like that is quite reprehensible IMO.
  16. Possibly. Though, again, it warrants being said that no future employer should have access to that information. Many people charged with juvenile crimes would not see that show up in a background check. But for police incompetence, much would be the same here. I don't want to say I feel sympathy for him on that, sympathy is too strong a word. But the system did fail him also.
  17. Dems change the rules in 2013 from 60 to 51 and we are all paying for it. They opened up the door with good intentions but now the Republicans have bull-dozed it down to inject their minions into the Court. This polarized means of governing is only leading to more and more anti-republic tactics. We may really be screwed, as much as I want to resist the doom and gloom.
  18. I liked Kennedy. I wish we had 9 Kennedys on the bench.
  19. If the team didn't resign Hunter they'd have spent more in FA or the draft trying to replace him. 14M is not an overpay. It is a bargain for this player. Plus this deal is for his age 24-29 seasons. You really can't get any more ideal than that. I said all along that Kendricks and Hunter were my top two priorities. Now I hope they can swing Diggs if the deal is reasonable.
  20. I really love Eddie's game. I hope he gets a shot at being the All-Star from this team.
  21. If you dismiss the relevance of his age then, with all due respect, you may wamy to do some reading on that. Sexual offenses are heinous and I feel for adults the death penalty should often be on the table. But juveniles are, and should be, treated differently. But yeah, what he did is awful. I'm glad the Twins aren't in on it.
  22. I do understand that. In fact I think it's the root of the problem with your viewpoint. I'm not sure you're considering all the Dynamics. Which I understand because of the nature of the crime but I'm trying to take emotion out of it and consider it from all the angles the story presents. And I think that's what many in here that you're trying to rip are trying to do.
  23. I'm sorry you joined a difficult conversation and expected it to be easy. I also care about the effects of child molestation, I worked directly with kids who experienced it as a counselor for about 5 years. Some of those kids themselves offended in part because of the offenses done to them. One of those kids, who was an accused offender, has gone on to be a state champion for victims rights in his state. And there are other success stories I've seen because juvenile offenders are not the same and we shouldn't treat them the same. Now how we treat them, and Heimlich in particular, gets really hard. It's a tough circle to square.
  24. Except, and this is the part I really hope you recognize, you DO care. You are concerned. If he was your local sheriff - would itconcern you? How about your kid's first grade teacher? Can you please drop the facade that this is only about whether he plays baseball or not? It clearly isn't. That he was 15 does not make it less traumatic for the 6 year old. That poor child has been scarred for life regardless. What it does change is how we treat the crime, their punishment, and their future. We know juveniles are less likely to repeat crimes because they commit crimes for reasons different than adults. We have an entire process to protect juveniles from their crimes due to a myriad of research to suggest against it. And to suggest for therapy and redemption. And, I can't stress this enough, but for the incompetence of a local police department Heimlich would've been protected as well. Maybe he didn't deserve that protection, but there are thousands of people out there in the world, probably some of whom you interact with, that have been protected from being outed for their crimes as a juvenile. There are valid reasons for that.
  25. I literally responded to a post wehre you said he could rot in jail his whole life? Here's my issue - you're wading into those waters with your criticisms. You are attacking everyone who has a torn view on this as being "Absolving". But many of us are torn because there are so many difficult dichotomies to this case that it causes our moral values to collide in uncomfortable ways. I've already said I'm glad the Twins aren't signing him. But I also can't get behind some of the things you're saying. It may not be your job to decide, but if you're going to rip people trying to wrestle with these ideas for being soft or absolving of a tough crime - then you better be ready to defend your own views too.
