  1. I guess I have a hard time seeing a team as a contender if they can't win more games than they lose over 100 games. And if you're not a contender....why act like one?
  2. Escobar was a free agent. Is Pressley the difference between contending and not contending in 2019? You don't think that seems a bit silly? We all want to see a pennant race, but we are sitting here on July 29th 8 games under .500. We haven't been .500 since April 22nd. Some of these complaints are really misguided - they come off as frustration with a lost season being leveled indiscriminately. The FO is making the right call, it's time to accept that. Or at least try and be a bit more fair-minded about your criticisms.
  3. I think it's odd (but unsurprising) that people think Gibson is too valuable to let go of, but that no one else in baseball will value him that way. Maybe they don't....but then maybe there is good reason for that too.
  4. It's looking harder to see a spot for Dozier out there. He may be an August candidate, but I would be a bit surprised if he cleared waivers.
  5. Well, it's also possibly $2 or $3. Just to keep things fair in that analysis. It's also worth noting that, in this scenario, eventually your $1 will turn into $0 all on it's own.
  6. I love the high-upside Class A/AA approach of the first two trades. But I think if Gibson is moved the return needs to be closer to contributing to the big leagues.
  7. One thing I really hope is that as guys are traded we see players get seasoning at the big league level that need it. This is wehre we need to give Gonsalves, Moya, Gordon, etc. the time to get their feet wet. It'll give us something to be invested in. Along with (hopefully) positive progress from Buxton and Sano.
  8. There are absolutely posters doing exactly that. Judging every trade negatively based on little more than "I want to win" and not putting any context into their criticism. It's ok to not like the returns on deals. It's ok to be unhappy we're in this position. But that civil discussion you want is also derailed by people effectively pouting about the reality of our situation. That isn't helpful either.
  9. That's fine. But we're judging the actions of the team and the FO...they don't (and shouldn't) make decisions based on fun or deliberate delusion about the chances of the team this year. If you're mad this team isn't more fun this year, don't blame the trade deadline - blame the crappy performance of the team that got them to a 48-53 record and sell-mode. The deadline is about facing reality, choosing now to stamp your feet in anger at this season's failures is really misguided and childish.
  10. I like Escobar and I hope he comes back next year. But I love the approach here by the Twins, rather than take a AAAA guy or someone like that, they went with guys that have high upside tools that could be nice additions if they can develop them. They weren't scared off by age or level of development, they went for upside. I will always dig that.
  11. This is roughly the same logic as foregoing your mortgage payment to buy lottery tickets....because that's more fun.
  12. Well, from those old leaks from Houston, I think you have to do more than field calls. Teams also need to call to start talks as a seller. I think making a deadline deal needs to work from both directions and not just about waiting for it to land in your lap.
  13. The DH will be universal. The game will be better for it.
  14. Those are all fair points and why I am not advocating "sell Gibson at all costs for the best return" - there are guys on this team I would say that about, but not him. I would shop Gibson hard, but I'm content to keep him. What I'm not content with is the mentality that we have to keep him. The flexibility you talk about, coupled with young starters we have that should be in the rotation next year, are why I'm willing to explore this aggressively.
  15. Gibson has never maintained effectiveness for more than 1 year to this point. Maybe he's a different guy, but my post was about how large the risk is in investing in him. If you get low-balled....keep him. That's absolutely an option. This team has pitching in AAA that should be in the rotation next year and payroll flexibility. If someone wants to boost their rotation and pays the price, I'd be listening.
  16. I'm just going to say that this is a poor argument. I hope an explanation isn't necessary.
  17. If Gibson was a normally aged pitcher at the end of his team control I'd probably agree with you. But an extension to a 32 year old is a major gamble right from the outset, regardless of who they are. So, sure, there is value in keeping him, but I wouldn't let that stop me from aggressively shopping him.
  18. Depends on the return. You don't have to deal him, but you should shop him. Getting blinded by immediate returns/value over long-term value is just as good a way to make mistakes as the reverse.
  19. No one wants to trade Gibson because they are a "hater", that's preposterous. Seriously. He's 31 at the end of the year, 32 by the end of his team control. He's not a long-term asset, so it's worthwhile to see what long-term assets he might yield in a trade.
  20. Doubts are totally legit. Most trade returns aren't going to be amazing and they make take awhile to manifest. We might get nothing for selling in the end. Key word is might. If we do nothing and hold on to these players we are guaranteed to get nothing.
  21. How about another Escobar? If we even land one player like that it'd be nice. There will be plenty to root for the last few months, including the return of Buxton and Sano. Hopefully we'll see some Gordon, Wade, Romero, Gonsalves, or others. There will always be reasons to be a fan, but this season is lost. Sell and get as many lottery tickets as you can for guys like Lynn, Reed, Rodney, Duke, etc. Sell for the best offer on Esco and Dozier. Explore if someone will knock your socks off for Gibson. We don't have to get a mind-blowing return for it to benefit our fandom going forward. I doubt anyone here was jumping up and down about getting Escobar, but we whooped the White Sox in that trade and it has helped lead to more wins for our team. Let's hope we can land a few more guys to help for yearsto come.
  22. Well said. I was really excited for a playoff season. This sucks. But it would suck more if we kept digging the hole deeper.
