  1. Actually the reason that people are delusional is that Hicks hasn't barely batted RH against RHP. I don't think it is practical to start in the middle of the season against MLB pitchers. I think several people suggested this last year though.
  2. This is another example of why all pitchers should be tried in the bullpen if they fail as starters. Hendriks wouldn't have profiled as a guy to have bullpen success though. He had an ordinary fastball and none of his secondary pitches were great. Usually guys that succeed have a better fastball and greatly benefit by not having to worry about their 3rd or 4th best pitches. But just like Perkins his fastball velocity jumped considerably and is no longer ordinary.
  3. All of those top prospects were also healthy and played full seasons. Buxton has missed so much time that it shouldn't be a surprise if he stays in the minors a little longer. Especially since Hicks might be a legit player and can cover CF. This would be similar to Oscar Taveras with the Cards. He was in AAA and got injured in 2013. He should have been up in 2014 (or even 2013) but he missed time and the Cards didn't have room. Unfortunately he passed away the following year.
  4. I don't get it. I offered Devon Travis for Wacha and he took an oldish declining SP that was never great and a prospect that isn't that great or young. I really don't understand why Olivera has so much value in fantasy and in real life. Why did the Braves trade away good young SP'ing for an older prospect?
  5. I hope so. It doesn't make sense from a service time standpoint but I miss September callups of top prospects.
  6. There is no explaining this. May should be starting.
  7. And that is why I don't think Reyes and probably not Shields will get claimed. I will take Shields on a 3/39 deal plus an option. That is a really good contract for a pitcher that good. The added bonus is that we don't have to watch the Nolasco scholarship pitch anymore.
  8. That is the same situation the Twins have now except one of those pitchers might not ever be useable. Obviously you don't do this by putting in a claim. This only works if he slips through waivers and then you can work out a trade that includes Nolasco. Nolasco is a sunk cost. And Shields is a great value at 9M/yr. The 21M season (his last) is where there would be a payroll crunch. I guess I would understand the objections about money better if anyone had any confidence that saving the money would actually be used in a worthwhile way.
  9. Your definition of decent is much different than mine. Shields would be the best pitcher on the Twins and Nolasco doesn't even deserve to be in the rotation regardless of his 5 wins in May. There is almost a zero chance of this happening though. It just isn't how JR rolls.
  10. I like Shields but Berrios isn't even a consideration for him even if Nolasco was included. May seems reasonable. A flyball pitcher in Petco that can get some K's. But even that gives me a little pause. Contracts (with Nolasco subtracted off) 9M 9M 21M - this is scary at age 36 16M option - 2M buyout This should be the argument against Shields and not that he is a marginal upgrade.
  11. 2.82 ERA 3.52ERA 3.15ERA 3.21 ERA 3.77 ERA He isn't a massive upgrade? 249 IP 227 228 227 133 and counting You still don't think he would be the best pitcher the Twins have? He isn't a true ace but he gives the Twins a formidable playoff rotation Shields Santana (not this year) Hughes Gibson Milone/Berrios/May If the Twins send Nolasco to offset salaries then they will have to include a fairly good prospect but you can never have enough starting pitching.
  12. I don't think anyone will claim Reyes. The Mets don't have the money. SD definitely doesn't have the money. The Yankees don't really roll like that anymore and I think will stick with Gregorious for another year. Shields would more likely be claimed and both could make sense for the Twins if they pass through with Nolasco being sent the other way to balance out the money.
  13. The thing that always frustrated me with not signing a mid tier RP was the money. The Twins had money to spend but it was understandable that they weren't signing a bunch of guys to 4 yr 10-15M/yr contracts. These mid tier RP'ers are available for 5M/yr on 2-3 yr contracts. It isn't an outstanding value but unspent money is also worthless. Instead they could have gotten a solid RP'er and a potential deadline asset. While I don't think Hu and Tapia are great prospects it would have been much better the last couple of seasons for the Twins to be the team trading a Jepsen level RP'er and collecting an extra prospect or two.
  14. the reason that Arcia is down is that he is 7/52 since the AS break. Everybody got excited about his first 10 games (HOT) but he hasn't shown that he is consistent.
  15. This makes a lot of sense if you only pick out the guys that have been successful. FWIW - I really liked the Gregerson pickup at the time. But the Twins should have been looking at these mid tier RP'ers. They didn't so there isn't much to do about it now other than make a trade.
  16. There really isn't a problem next year with Buxton, Hicks, Rosario, Kepler and Arcia. Kepler (or Buxton - gasp) starts in AAA unless Arcia completely bombs out before then. Good teams have good prospects in AAA ready to call up and fill holes when injuries/ineffectiveness happen. The Twins for the most part have had AAAA players in AAA until recently. Loving Kepler though. Such a cool story and now he is on the verge.
  17. That's the lovely thing about spending money and trading prospects. They still have many prospects, they are still drafting and signings prospects and teams will continue to trade veterans for those prospects. Did they really give up that much though? I am adding up the top prospects leaving the Jays and it doesn't add up to a lot. They gave up some MiLB depth but I wouldn't be losing sleep if the Twins traded several of Cederoth, Chargois, Duffey or even ABW. Norris, Hoffman, Tirado and Barreto are really good but they picked up 3 elite players for them. That is an outstanding return even if ONE is a rental. They picked up an elite SS for 2 interesting (top 100ish) but not elite prospects. They picked up an elite 3B for a good MLB'er and a rising top 25 prospect. They picked up an elite SP rental for one elite prospect. They picked up a solid CF'er for 2 RP'ing prospects They picked up a setup man for guys outside their top 20
  18. Not really. These threads are suggesting that we traded a top prospect for a replacement level RP'er. Jepsen is a pretty solid RP'er. Hu is a successful MiLB pitcher that doesn't rank highly in the stuff category. The problem is that the Twins didn't make a big move when some of the big moves didn't require great prospects but required money (short and long term). They didn't need to trade the farm to get a good player but they needed to pick up some money. Not surprisingly JR was very conservative this year.
  19. Are we talking about the same Broxton that has a 5.89 ERA? I really don't understand the angst in this particular deal. I understand the angst in the big picture of the trade deadline moves (lack thereof).
  20. People overrate how much this damages a farm system. Right now if you have money then the best way to utilize prospects is by trading some of them for very good real baseball players. We have said that the Tigers would face a steep decline practically since the beginning of BYTO almost a decade ago. And the Jays have more young talent and they still have a better farm system than the Tigers ever had.
  21. Jepsen is underrated Hu is overrated Tapia is overrated The problem here isn't this trade but rather that it is a rather unspectacular and only trade. This trade is nothing like the Ramos trade though. Ramos was an actual really good prospect that was MLB ready. Hu has a long way to go before he becomes a Liam Hendriks level prospect. I like him and am disappointed that he was traded but he has become way overrated here. My biggest disappointment is that the Twins traded away a Taiwanese prospect. I was really rooting for him to make it and see Taiwan become big Twins fans. They tend to bandwagon jump whenever there is a successful Taiwanese player.
  22. Absolutely. I don't like the idea of trading Plouffe at all.
  23. Plouffe most likely won't bring you back the C/SS that you want. The reason has nothing to do with Plouffe but rather how incredibly difficult it is to make an MLB for MLB (or MLB ready) trade that is that position specific.
  24. I am on board but you won't be able to get one of those players for kepler/Harrison/Milone/PTBNL. Could Kepler/Rosario/Polanco/Gonsalves get it done? Some will think that is way too much to give up but Bruce is a 3-4 WAR 30 HR hitter and Chapman is one of the best closers in baseball. The Twins make a deal w/o giving up Berrios and end up with two really good players. the only unfortunate thing is that C and SS are still issues.
  25. He had two good years with a sub 6 K/9 (he was lucky). In the last 3 years he has pitched 34 innings with 27 K's and 25 BB's. There is no way that he has any value to any team. He was 100% a salary dump. Reyes was also a salary dump but he has value (unlike Harrison) but not as much as his contract.
