  1. He is playing 1B in order to have positional flexibility. If there is an opening then he will play OF otherwise he has an additional position that he can easily move to if there was a need there.
  2. Gomez never really had any success in the minors. Similar tools and Buxton could end up being that type of player but I wouldn't compare Gomez's initial struggles to what we might expect to get from Buxton.
  3. that was true in the draft but Buxton is a 5 tool player that has produced everywhere in the minors except for the lost 2014 season (30 games between injuries). You get excited about these guys. There is still risk because he is a prospect. I think I mentioned somewhere a year or so ago when I tried to temper his HOF expectations that his downside is BJ Upton. 5 tool premium athlete that produced throughout the minors and was up for good at 22. BJ was a real good player (22.4 WAR in 6 seasons) but he never really lived up to the expectations due the swing and miss in his bat. His power was also inconsistent. Buxton has done great in the minors but both of these warnings are present. Obviously his ultimate downside is lower but this is let's say a 25% level outcome. I can live with that but I hope he does better.
  4. There should be better solutions but Arcia was not that option. Either he is significantly injured or he checked out in July. I don't know why but he has hit worse in AAA than Drew Butera since the middle of July.
  5. Alright Who parted with their Jonny Flynn bobblehead collection last month? Who else sent something else to John Oliver's Lady of Perpetual Exemption faux church? http://www.mediaite.com/tv/john-oliver-shuts-down-tax-exempt-church-for-the-most-disgusting-reason/
  6. I think you underrate the concern. How is he going to adjust if pitchers don't ever throw him a strike? Does he keep swinging? In August and September he is hitting with a .663 and .533 OPS. I don't know if that is due to pitchers adjusting and advance scouts finding Rosario's holes or not but the floor next season is a player that can't hack it as an MLB starter despite his solid showing this season.
  7. The next best catcher is Iannetta so if you don't think Wieters makes sense then try to rationalize 32 yr old Iannetta on a (albeit much smaller) multi-year deal. One option would be to buy low on Alex Avila and hope for a bounce back. .778 OPS against RHP and suzuki platoons the other days (no platoon split). Oakland has been platooning their catchers like this with sneaky brilliance.
  8. The Brewers are not trading for Plouffe. They will be in full blown rebuild mode if they trade Lucroy and want prospects so if you want to make that trade then first you have to trade Plouffe for prospects like I have been saying all along. The Yankees just signed Chase Headley and he is a similar caliber player as Plouffe. I'm really not sure why they would trade away a capable backup (murphy) when they have a 32 yr old starting catcher. Wieters is a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. There aren't younger catchers to sign at more money. It is even hard to find young catchers that teams are willing to trade because it is a scarce injury prone position. Derek Norris is the one obvious tradeable catcher that is an alternative for the Twins. Everyone needs to stop mentioning Hedges in other threads the Padres should go into full blown rebuild mode and they will strongly prefer to keep Hedges.
  9. I think this is a poor measuring stick to use for a rookie especially when that rookie went 6+ innings in 7 of his last 9 starts. And it doesn't change the fact that the Twins rotation was in shambles at the time. Pelfrey had returned to being Pelfrey. Milone had been inconsistent. Hughes hadn't been right all year. Nolasco had a nice FIP but was still pitching awful. Santana was still suspended. Gibson was in the midst of a hot streak but has returned to not striking batters out. It might be valid to say that May wasn't doing great when demoted but he was probably the 1st or 2nd best pitcher (behind Gibson) at the time. May is a big, strong pitcher that throws hard but that is where the similarities end imo. It was a battle to get Garza to not throw fastballs (the uncoachable part) and I have never heard the same about May. Garza pitched his best (xFIP-wise) with the Cubs and his fastball usage was at the lowest level of his career so he finally started listening. Of course he threw a lot more sliders and his arm hasn't been that great since then.
  10. The 75% outcome is that Hu sticks on an MLB roster for a couple of years. The chance that he is a #4 starter are much lower. This board continually overrates the chances of prospect success. Duffey and his 43 AA/AAA starts and cup of coffee is approaching a 75% chance of sticking as a #4 starter. Hu is A/A+ version of Duffey. To put Hu into some perspective fangraphs ranked him in the #22-29 range (out of 79) that were dealt at the trade deadline in a group that was specifically outside of their top 200 prospects. He is an interesting prospect but he doesn't have overpowering stuff (ceiling) and hasn't had success in the high minors. FWIW - Tapia ranked in the last 6 grouping out of 79 prospects that were traded at the deadline. He is interesting but I am not losing any sleep over trading him.
  11. Santana is precisely the definition of sophomore slump. The term was unknowingly created by people to describe players that significantly exceeded their expectations or had poor advanced stats (before advanced stats were cool). In the truest sense though sophomore slump doesn't exist though. Some players exceed expectations as rookies while others bomb their rookie seasons. It shouldn't be a surprise that these perform closer to their expectations the following season. I wouldn't be shocked if Rosario struggles next year. Perhaps he can continue to have this poor plate discipline (like Adam Jones) but pitchers will adjust and he might not.
  12. Sit Plouffe and Dozier while starting Buxton? This isn't something I really want to see if the goal is to win the game. I want to see Plouffe or Sano in RF because neither Buxton nor Hunter should be playing right now.
  13. At this point just make him a RP. He is 26 (opening day next year) and the Twins have excessive starters and too few RP'ers. Combine that with the durability and control problems (could reduce if throwing fewer pitch types) and it is logical to give up on the SP hope. May on the other hand is a different story.
  14. The point doesn't change. This bullpen is not good.
  15. I would have let the following PH or bat in their lineup spot before PH'ing Arcia for them. Kepler, Pinto (40 man but awful this year), Polanco (40 man) santana, Nunez, Herrmann, Robinson, Buxton, Punto and even Jason Tyner. I draw the line at Drew Butera though.
  16. from dictionary.com I am assuming that you mean the opposite of dearth but I completely disagree then. I just hope the Twins can man SS internally for the next couple of years. There is absolutely no reason to move Dozier off of 2B especially since his bat profiles as a 3B. It is a huge bonus to have a 2B that hits like a 3B and fields above average.
  17. Nobody has pinned the Twins chances simply on having Berrios in the bullpen. He gives the Twins another potentially solid to very good late inning arm (like Finnegan or Carlos Martinez or David Price or an endless group of called up starters). Now that Perkins is struggling with an injury and not pitching well that might mean that Fien or JR Graham (I like but has struggled) are pitching in the 7th inning. Berrios might not be better but there is a decent chance that he is and he give the team an extra option. Wouldn't it make sense for Berrios to take his lumps this year if they are competing again next year?
  18. This may sound impossible but you are wrong. Arcia in August - .107/.159/.227/385 Hunter in August - .130/.218/.246/.464 Hunter has been awful for 2 months but really Hunter has nothing to do with Arcia not being called up. He has been one of the worst players in AAA for 1.5 months. There is absolutely no reason to promote him to the majors. None. Zero. Nada. Hunter should be getting benched though.
  19. You are greatly overrating the bullpen and the constant availability of 3 arms. I would absolutely be mixing him into the last 3 innings with what the Twins have.
  20. He is batting <.100 for the last 1.5 months. He is very talented but he doesn't make the team better right now.
  21. Why would he only be used as mop up? He would be an excellent 7th inning weapon in Sept and potentially the playoffs. This is covertly (really not so covertly) about service time. I understand the importance of gaining an extra year of team control but he makes this team better similar to what the Royals did with Finnegan and the Cards have done with Carlos Martinez before.
  22. that is exactly what the Twins did in the AJ trade except it was one year later in the recovery. This is a little different because Mauer was completely blocked by AJ whereas Sano can play other positions but I don't see an uproar by fans since it will be obvious to most of them that sano is replacing Plouffe even if there is more to it than that.
  23. The way you you get something that will be on the field and producing in 2016 is to trade for prospects and then flip those prospects and/or others for what you want (targeting all of the other teams instead of just a handful). If you aim for a MLB for MLB trade then almost for sure you will be compromising on the package value since the Twins only have a couple of need positions where very few teams have multiple good options at those positions and want a 29 yr old 3B. Norris for Plouffe is one of the few where the value matches up reasonably close and both teams have a need/replacement available.
  24. That will almost certainly have to be the first part of the trade. those prospects can be important trade chips for something the Twins actually need. It also depends on where the Twins can spend that 8-10M that he will make. I would take Sano (3B) and Davis (DH) and good prospects over Plouffe (3B) and Sano (DH) and a little money. Sano (3B), Vargas/Kepler/? (DH), Wieters © and prospects. That sounds better also.
  25. I have never ever ever ever said that we hide our trade interest for a catcher. What we need to do is approach the 4-5 most likely teams that would want Plouffe and work out the most valuable return for him. That is how you end up with an AJ type trade. If a catcher or SS is in that system (anywhere) then great but it is almost for sure that the Twins won't land an MLB ready starter or MLB player in return (aside from a Norris for Plouffe deal). Very little is going to change for team needs in 2 months. Donaldson, headley, Sandoval, longoria, Machado, Moustakas, Beltre/Gallo, Seager and Lawrie are going to be starting 3B for 9 of 14 other teams. Those guys have spots basically locked down. That leaves HOU (Valbuena), DET (Castellanos), CHW, CLE, LAA (resign Freese?). This is of course just the AL but the NL is the same story. There just aren't that many teams that will be looking. My main point is that the prevailing wisdom that is constantly repeated around here is unobtainable. Plouffe will almost certainly not be traded to make the 2016 team better or for a C or SS upgrade. If you want to trade Plouffe to open up 3B for Sano then that is an argument. I will go one step further. the Twins should focus on recreating the AJ trade and go after a couple of lower level prospects with upside in the hopes of finding a Liriano. If nothing else these are great assets to have to trade for MLB weaknesses. Ironically the board would erupt if the Twins acquired a RP like Nathan in the deal.
