  1. Nearly every catcher target is flawed and if people focus on the flaws then the Twins will certainly be using a Suzuki/mediocre vet platoon. Of course Wieters costs a draft pick but that draft pick is less valuable than Kepler and the rest of the package needed for Lucroy. Norris still might be my first target (even up swap for Plouffe) but Wieters is really intriguing.
  2. Should the Twins scouting department become stalkeresque when it comes to pick #55 in the draft?
  3. I would definitely like to see what Lavine could do in that spot. He has the skillset to do really well but more importantly I would want to see if he was a legit starter with this group this year or if the Wolves need to make an offseason move. Dieng seems to be getting forgotten about and it might make sense to move him if they can get something of value back.
  4. They should have been able to do something with this but nobody seemed to take the marketing/organization part of the project. I agree that Simmons was annoying in podcasts. They were some of my least liked podcasts on Grantland.
  5. This is almost the right team for Rubio to run. They still need to figure out how the rest of the parts around Rubio, Wiggins and Towns go together but Bjelica keeps getting a lot of minutes.
  6. He just posted his best offensive season since 2009. Not only won't he hit this well again next season but I would put the over/under on games played at 100. 22.5M for a low .800's DH that is like to miss 1/3+ of the season. This would rank pretty low on my to do list this winter. Additionally the 22.5M likely hits or exceeds the salary ceiling for the Twins so there wouldn't be any bullpen help coming. He isn't a bad player but several things have to happen for this to make sense.
  7. Gibson isn't even on the table for Teixeira. Why on earth would we trade Plouffe (2 years of control for 10-14M total) for prospects and then trade a good (but not great SP) for a 22.5M Teixeira? I am not even sure I would take the 22.5M if he was on waivers.
  8. I am not sure that ESPN ever wanted Grantland but they did it as Simmons' project. Simmons had a great eye for talent but as far as I can tell no business sense. ESPN also never found a way to monetize it. the website was a mess. I just found the complete 30 for 30 archive a few months ago. This is what started me listening to podcasts and they have (had) some of the best out there. It will be interesting to hear what the staff has to say about this in the coming weeks. Most of the podcasts had been shut down for the last couple of weeks. Not sure if that was ESPN's doing or the the staff.
  9. You dismiss the ability of the other agents. Boras gets the press because he is the biggest name but each of the MLB agents is getting megadeals for superstar FA's.
  10. There is no reason that the Mets can't include as much cash as they want in a trade. If they include 6M then it is very reasonable. We don't know if the Mets want to get rid of Cuddyer though. I would be surprised if all 5 of those OF'ers are successful and healthy at the same time next year. You certainly don't call a prospect like Kepler up until there is a starting role for him (or it is late August).
  11. It's possible that he can essentially skip AA/AAA (only 73 games) because of his immense raw talent but it is a stretch to say that he has nothing to learn at the level. He was overmatched his first time up in the majors even if you look at his month over month improvement.
  12. Because he is still a competent player. That is who you want as a 4th OF'er provided you have a corner OF'er that can field CF (like Rosario, Hicks, Buxton or Kepler) for a couple of days if needed. Having Cuddyer allow the Twins to start Buxton and Kepler in AAA unless they dominate spring training. He can start at the beginning of season or backup Arcia and when it is time for one of the prospects to move up then he can move into a sub role and be a legit PH off the bench. I would prefer that to signing another Shafer or Robinson. As far as the comment regarding Buxton having nothing to learn in AA/AAA that isn't true. He has played a total of 73 games there and has missed a lot of games the last two seasons. He has enough raw talent that he might be able to skip those levels but most likely he has plenty to learn in the minors.
  13. Tayshaun Prince starting over Lavine or Martin? That doesn't make any sense. Nice to see Bjelica get 23 minutes and rather predictably take 2/3 of his shots from beyond the arc.
  14. There will always be a few veterans added to fill out a roster. Cuddyer would be ideal if he was happy with starting 60-80 games at OF/DH/1B as a bench player. It is important to have the right veteran players around as the young players come up. And you really don't want a top prospect like Kepler up as a 4th OF'er getting inconsistent playing time. He should either be up and starting almost every day or in AAA. I think the Twins could make a deal work if the Mets picked up 4-6M of the contract (reducing it to 6.5-8.5) and sent back a top 30ish prospect.
  15. Actually most agents of above average to elite FA's get their clients long term, inflated contracts. There have been times that Boras has pulled a rabbit out of his hat and created a bidding war where one never existed though.
  16. For the same contract I would take Zimmerman over Davis and they might get similar contracts if something like 6/144 is possible for Davis. I find it ironic that people are pointing out Davis' age 23-25 struggles and then suggesting that the Twins almost entirely build a team from the farm. Prospects struggle. It is part of the development process. I think it would be interesting to come up with a list of FA's (with estimated contracts) and top trade targets and for people to rank them according to their preference. I get this feeling that some are basically dead set against signing anyone because of X, Y and Z and in addition to that unwilling to part with any significant prospect.
  17. I am not sure if people realize it but you can nitpick every FA. Most of them are nearing 30 and there is a limited supply of them so almost all of them are overpaid for too many years. If you go this route then you are basically relegating yourself to signing mediocre cheap players in FA. I would be insanely pumped if this team signed Chris Davis, traded Plouffe for a pair of good prospects and then traded several prospects for Lucroy (or even Norris). I don't really have a problem with signing an ace either but it might take 7 years and 25M/yr to sign a pitcher until he is almost 40. I might take the hitter for fewer years in that case.
  18. Why not just sign a solid setup RP'er instead of trading Plouffe?
  19. I don't think he is on the block but I think if the Twins offered Dozier for him and a 2nd lesser prospect they would make him available in a hurry. But the bigger point is that it is convenient to pick apart Lucroy but that likely means that the Twins roll into 2016 with a Suzuki/AJ platoon at best.
  20. I don't think people really understand how few catchers are available. Lucroy Norris - a very logical target - Lucroy is much better defensively and offensive IF... Wieters - 4/64? AJ Pierzynski Maybe a guy like Gary Sanchez is made available but I would much rather trade a prospect or two instead of Dozier like has been suggested. Most likely the Twins end up with someone like AJ and have a very mediocre platoon behind the plate.
  21. It is easy to say that the Brewers are not going to be competitive in the next two but they would rather play Lucroy (and rebuild his value) rather than take some (most) of these offers for fading prospects. I would be surprised if you could get a deal done without including someone like Duffey, May, Kepler or Polanco. It is a risk to acquire a catcher with a concussion history but there is a lot of upside in the deal. And I am not talking about another 6.1 WAR season. 3.5 WAR (somehow dismissed above in the thread) would have been the 3rd highest catcher WAR last season. In addition to that you definitely keep Suzuki even if you acquire Lucroy. During the regular season you only catch Lucroy 4 times/wk with 1 game at DH. Assuming the Twins can get to the playoffs then you catch him everyday (a lot of off days anyway). Plouffe really only enters into talks as a piece in a 2nd trade for prospects. Nolasco doesn't enter in at all. If Nolasco is a piece then the Twins need to send better prospects (no thanks) and the Brewers are not a high payroll team (not taking any salary happily) that wants a broken vet occupying developmental spots.
  22. It is hard to believe that Banuelos is still only 24.
  23. I would be content if this was the Twins big splash into FA this offseason. A 24 yr old that could likely contend for a late inning role next season. I am assuming that he would be a RP'er anyway.
  24. You missed the greater point. Going for it isn't trading 1-2 of your 10-30th ranked prospects.
  25. Are you calling Kevin Jepsen and Neal Cotts nothing? The moves you listed were about as significant. And for the most part they involved completely irrelevant prospects. Going for it means that part of the future was sold.
