  1. It turns out that I might get to watch Park play this weekend in Taiwan. WSBC Premier 12 seems to be competition for the WBC and they are playing the first round of the tournament in Taiwan this week. The US/CA/Latin American teams are sending washed up MLB'ers and 2nd rate prospects but the Japan, SK and Cuban teams are stacked with Otani, Park, Gourriel (both), Despagnie and pretty much all of the top players. In the first game Park went 2/4 with a 2B and a K against Otani (and the RP'ers). Otani is the top Japanese pitcher (along with Maeda).
  2. Rebuilding teams simply won't be interested in Plouffe. If the Twins want to trade for the pieces they need then it has to be young players which of course have more value. Of course I would rather keep Kepler but if trading him is what is needed to bring in a legit catcher or another really good player then you make that trade. Plouffe for Norris is probably my first option though. This seems to make sense for both teams but perhaps the Padres want to rebuild and only want young players in return.
  3. he would likely decline it and I would be fine with Plouffe on a one year contract. Plouffe would be stupid to decline it and not go after a multi-year deal.
  4. And then you extend him a QO and get a draft pick. the twins don't have to be run like a tiny market baseball team that has to trade players before they become FA's. Plouffe should be traded for one and only one reason: the haul of prospects (or for Norris) is fairly good (like one top 50ish prospect at a minimum). He shouldn't be traded for the sake of trading him.
  5. It isn't for the sake of Plouffe. It would be because either OF is more marketable to a rebuilding team and the trade market for Plouffe is likely pretty weak. It is also for the sake of having a really good IF defense.
  6. Conversely we finally have an infield that can field and yet all offseason some are trying to trade Dozier and Plouffe so we can start a rookie and Sano in the infield. Sano's bat is what is interesting. He will be a poor defender at 3B and he will likely be a poor defender in the OF. In addition to that at some point somebody will be injured (like Mauer) and he will rotate out of the OF.
  7. It will be interesting to see which direction Ryan goes in after this. Does he try to make Plouffe/Sano/Park fit on the roster? Or does this lead to a Plouffe trade? I am not convinced that the latter has to happen. There really aren't too many holes on this team. C and RP is about it unless you were going after an ace. There is plenty of time to address those still. I don't think Lucroy or Wieters are on the radar but a Plouffe/Norris trade might be. Another angle would be to keep Plouffe and to trade Rosario or Kepler (along with X and Y) for Lucroy. If Sano is playing OF then they might as well make use of those extra OF'ers. I heart Kepler though. Overall I like the move. It is a case of adding talent that doesn't cost anything more than money. And the money is reasonable. I also like the prospect of having Dozier/Plouffe/Sano/Park and possibly another 20+ HR in the lineup. These aren't the Twins of the last decade.
  8. I would not be disappointed at all. Torii was a legit all star player for a decade. If he was Jacque Jones I would be a little disappointed though.
  9. AJ's only place on a baseball team is as a part time catcher. If he is DH'ing then the Twins really screwed up in the offseason (comparable to Nunez DH'ing). I agree that a veteran OF bat first player should be brought in. I mentioned Cuddyer if the Mets would pick up half the salary. He is a guy that can start if needed, backup if prospects earn a spot or PH. Something the Twins haven't had for awhile.
  10. signing some lower priced pitchers instead of Nolasco, Hughes and Santana means more Pelfrey and Correia level pitchers. And I think 2 of the 3 pitchers (hughes and Santana) will work out very well for the Twins. Nolasco got injured and has been dreadful. It happens. Getting an ace doesn't have to happen this offseason but if the Twins want to be anything more than an underdog in every playoff series then they will need to address this at some point or hope that Berrios is that pitcher. Yes, the playoffs are a crapshoot but they are more of a longshot when you are an underdog to a more talented team in 3 series. This is what plagued the Twins in the 2000's. They made the playoffs but they were typically considered one of the least talented teams in the playoffs (my hopes were high in 2006 though). It isn't impossible to win this way but it is really hard.
  11. The suspense is killing me. Not really. It will be interesting to see how he does in the MLB but I can't see this for the Twins unless another move happens (plouffe traded or Sano in the OF). I think both are unlikely.
  12. Harrison is one of those really frustrating prospects and he has the exact profile needed for corner OF. He walks a lot and has great raw power. I have no idea how so much raw power only equals 5 HR's. He is the kind of prospect that completely breaks out one year though. In a way he is a little like Plouffe who just decided to start hitting HR's when he became a MLB'er. Obviously he would have more value at 3B but he could easily be a Cuddyer/Kubel type of bat in the OF.
  13. He is a prospect whose luster has worn off and your proposal is basically hoping that other GM's haven't noticed. He isn't going to rank in any top 200 lists and no deal for a player at Lucroy's level is going to be headlined by Stewart. These proposals amount to trying to glue together a bunch of things that you don't really want and trying to convince other teams that they have a lot of value. They don't. Other teams are going to be more interested in Kepler, gonsalves or Palacios or risers in the system than someone whose value is plummeting.
  14. Arcia is the new Casilla in trade talks. He accounts for <10% of the value of virtually any proposed trade so he really isn't even worth mentioning other than as a throw in. Including Stewart in virtually every trade talk is just as funny. Maybe the opposing GM's haven't noticed that he can't strike out and still have him ranked highly? Quit trying to pawn off mediocre prospects for really good players. And if the Brewers are rebuilding then they are going to want players with more team control than Plouffe and probably Gibson.
  15. then why in the world does this thread even exist?
  16. While I am a pessimist about Sano's defense at 3B (good enough but still likely below avg) I am concerned that Sano will look like Delmon in the OF. Delmon had good straight line speed but he started slowly, turned like an ocean liner and didn't go back very well. I am not nearly as sold on the depth of the OF next season as everyone. I expect at least 2 of the previously listed players to disappoint or be injured. Being able to stick Sano in the OF for a few days here or there isn't a bad idea if the Twins are planning on keeping Plouffe (I think they will).
  17. This will certainly be true if the Twins trade away their good players. Perhaps I could be talked into trading Dozier but Sanchez isn't even close enough for a player as good as Dozier. I would do Polanco for Sanchez. That seems to be reasonable for both sides.
  18. Being injured and not playing much doesn't equal decline. Yes, there should be concern that he wasn't 100% in the partial season that he played before this contract. If he was 100% then he would be getting 5 yrs (possibly more) for 20+M/yr. And FWIW he caught back to backs 4 times in September. As of right now everything is saying that he is on track for a complete recovery from TJ. This isn't a concussion type injury that will re-occur in the future.
  19. He had TJ so please explain your concern.
  20. He came back at 12 months and for a catcher I would consider the recovery to be closer to a pitcher. Pitchers can come back in 12 months but if they do then they are usually babied that first season. Just like Wieters. The reason that Wieters is available at a discount is because of this issue. If he had been healthier then he would be getting 5 or more years at 20+M. Basically he would have exceeded McCann's contract.
  21. I am not going to alter my life for something that has a 12% chance of happening sometime in the next 7 years (Daily Mail article). And even if it did I doubt there is any agreement as to how much damage it would cause. I certainly don't think any 3rd world country has the infrastructure to handle such an event and invade the land of guns.
  22. Why does his arm bother you? The amount of games that he has missed is exactly what you would expect from a catcher recovering from TJ. To spin a positive like that agent Wieters has a lot less wear and tear than the typical 30 yr old catcher due to missing most/part of 2 seasons.
  23. I really don't understand the concern about money. Unless the Twins were serious about spending on an ace they have nowhere to spend money (aside from the bullpen) in the foreseeable future. OF, 1B and DH - overflowing with prospects (and Mauer) and it is extremely unlikely that they go for a Chris Davis, Heyward or Upton type on a massive contract 2B/3B - locked down SS - Escobar/Polanco (gordon in a few years) is probably better than anything you can acquire at a reasonable price SP - no reason to add anyone unless it is an ace (very unlikely) bullpen - spending big on RP'ers is one of the worst values out there In addition to that very few players are going through arb in the next couple of seasons getting raises. There are a lot of players that will make the MLB minimum.
  24. That is exactly what I am saying. Nishioka was in the pretty good category. Not anywhere near the absolutely destroying category. Park has had twice as many HR's as the 10th ranked HR hitter in his league for the last 4 seasons. He has been in the top 4 in OPS for the last 4 seasons. There are reasons to be skeptical that the success will transfer (for example more than 1 K/game) but he has destroyed the league. Nishioka was a good player in Japan.
  25. Your definition of absolutely destroying a league appear to be much different than mine. Park has had 4 straight seasons of 31-53 HR's and a .950-1.150 OPS's. Nishioka was an all-star and a nice player.
