  1. They don't need to pay a FA though. Nothing is forcing them to. Losing the money they could have spent on a FA is the same as spending it on a player they don't want. If the best baseball move is to play the rookie then that should be the move. Why subsidize teams that don't spend the money to make their product better and instead just pocket the money for easy profits?
  2. It is still early. I will get concerned if they still look terrible at the 20 game mark. The talent is still there but the inconsistency and fundamentals aren't all of the time. One nice thing is that Dunn having a rough couple of games have quieted the trade Rubio talk that was building. This isn't a Dunn vs Rubio thing but rather a how do you build a solid to above average bench if you get rid of players in your top 8. Perhaps you could get back a nice player for Rubio but it seems like a lateral move just to get Dunn an extra 10 minutes a game.
  3. The A's are definitely small to mid market since there is another team in their area. I am not sure that this is the time to get upset about revenue sharing though. The A's spent 85M (or 80M) on payroll last year. It was the 5th lowest but it isn't like the Marlins or Astros 3 years ago with a 22M or 36M payroll. If you have a problem with the A's then the problem is with the revenue sharing equation and not how much they spent. I have thought that teams receiving revenue sharing should have to maintain a certain payroll or lose a portion of the revenue sharing. If they want to play a bunch of rookies instead of a mediocre FA that is fine but they don't receive the money (and pocket it) that they could have spent on the mediocre FA.
  4. Lavine contributes everywhere in fantasy. You should be well rewarded. What was Lavine's ADP (in general or for you)? I can imagine that he was in the highly hyped sleeper category. The kind that everyone was talking about and then he went a little higher than a sleeper should.
  5. Finally we get to see the real Wolves even if it was against a depleted opponent. Lavine is going to gain some star power this season. Perhaps he won't be the most well rounded player but he can create some havoc and open up passing lanes as defenders move to help out. And he can shoot 3's. He is so needed to take this team to the next level (a 50+ win team - in the future)
  6. 2 years ago it was crazy money but with the cap explosion and drunken sailor spending it is a great salary. I still like Dieng as trade bait and getting a 4 to give the Wolves a team that could run the other team off the floor. And it would be nice to have a 4 that can shoot some 3's since that is a big weakness.
  7. I missed part of this thread this summer but to go back to the volleyball rule changes a bit. Most of the changes were done to increase the pace of play. I was playing on a traveling club team in university when the rule changes went into effect and at first we were like wtf but the new rules work. The new scoring where you don't need to serve to score a point. At high levels it is such a disadvantage to serve that there can be long stretches where nobody scores and teams are just trading sideouts. In the new scoring games are a more consistent length. The libero (different colored jersey player) was just a modification of what teams were already doing. Most high level teams had 1 or 2 players (usually middle hitters) that were subbed out while in the back row for smaller, quicker players. Subbing players out requires a whistle and a stoppage in play. The libero subs in more like a hockey player (dead ball obviously) and just runs onto the court replacing the other player. they can only sub for one specific player during a game. They took a chance making these changes but their progressive attitude benefited the game (aside from confusing casual fans).
  8. Why are we talking about age 32-33? He is on a two year contract and nobody is talking about an extension. I think it has been virtually unanimous to look at dealing him. Nobody is arguing that.
  9. You talk about advanced metrics in one part and then downplay his value stating 100+ guaranteed K's. This would be the definition of cherry picking. Dozier has averaged 4 WAR since his 1st full season (last 4 years) and ranks 7th among all MLB 2B during that time. This is not the type of player that you just ride out. He is the type of player that you make sure you get good value for or you very happily keep him.
  10. The biggest thing concerning any Dozier trade is one of only a handful of teams actually being willing to pay the price. It only takes one but there aren't that many possibilities to start with. The price imo has to be a top 50 prospect and a top 100 prospect at a minimum and one of those at the very least has to be a starting pitcher.
  11. I think the Wolves with Towns should take what the other team will give them offensively. If Towns is guarded by Gasol, Howard, Deandre, Drummond or another defensive big then Towns should make them chase him around the court and take them away from the boards. If Towns is guarded by a Horford type then he should be posting up all the time. I think the loss should reign in enthusiasm a little but doesn't really change the long term view of the team. It will always be tough for the Wolves to be a great 3 point shooting team as long as neither the PG nor the 2nd wing are prolific outside shooters. Optimistically both Rubio and Wiggins make one/game. The same goes for Towns. Combine that with Gorgui (0.0/game) and Lavine can only do so much. This is one area where the bench could help but not the current bench players. Only Rush and Bjelica should be hoisting up 3's with any regularity.
  12. So you object to giving up Dieng or Dunn? Lavine, Towns and Wiggins are the young core and they also keep Rubio. Dieng is nice but Aldridge is a near elite player. My biggest concern is the lack of backcourt depth if Dunn is traded. But depth is something that can be found.
  13. I think Dunn's ROY problem is that he won't post big numbers due to sharing the PG role with Rubio. I think many might consider him to be one of the top rookies long term by what he does this year. I am not really sold on Ingram filling up a statsheet this year. I think he needs a little time to become an NBA player. That really leaves the ROY award wide open with Simmons injured. Perhaps Saric or Embid put up big numbers if the 76'ers can figure out their logjam of bigs. Theoretical trade - What would you give up for LaMarcus Aldridge if the Wolves are 23-17 and Aldridge is an odd fit and tradeable as a few people have theorized? I think it have to include Dunn or Lavine and Dieng. I don't know about that but Aldridge and Towns seem perfect together in the frontcourt.
  14. It is nice to see that everyone stayed on topic. I certainly hope that nobody has illusions that the rotation will be fixed in a season especially considering how poor the FA market it, the general lack of trade chips (aside from Dozier) and the struggles that prospects frequently face when called up. I like the long term potential of the Twins rotation especially if they can add an established veteran or two but there isn't a route to a good rotation next year unless magic is involved. Magic would include finding a Jake Arrieta type (should try but unlikely), finding a perfect Dozier trade (could happen), Berrios doing a 180 and another prospect taking off immediately when called up. 1 or 2 of these can happen but that is the best case scenario (realistic scenario).
  15. The bonus pool recommendations were completely ineffective as the Red Sox and Rangers showed. Why is a draft needed instead of a hard(er) cap?
  16. This is one part of the project. http://taiwanswaterfalls.com/ Sometime this year (or next) I plan on launching a new site. So much work to do.
  17. The stupid thing is that the only thing they need to do is to make a hard(er) cap for the bonus pool. Right now the penalty for exceeding the cap is a slap on the wrist.
  18. Fantasy baseball is done for me. My travel blogging is really starting to take off and I can potentially start making money (and decent money) soon but it is like having a full time job on top of a full time job running a business. I might be interested in a fun single season basketball league since I follow NBA more nowadays and there are fewer players.
  19. The Twins have one legit trade chip (Dozier) and I included him in the plan above. Or are you advocating trading a player like Kepler or Sano to get back a bona fide starter. Hint - trading Rosario or Vargas won't bring back the starter you want. Trading Plouffe won't bring back anything. Trading Ervin might bring back an A Mejia level prospect so that is one longer term option. But you have to have players worth trading to pull off the trades that you want to pull off.
  20. Ways to acquire bona fide starting pitching talent 1) sign the best starting pitcher in the FA class (which sucks) 2) hope that another team matches up in a Brian Dozier trade and trades top talent - this could happen but this could also result in a forced trade where the Twins lose a lot on value - this is the only one with a realistic chance of acquiring a bona fide starting pitcher for next season 3) Magic 4) Draft the best pitcher available and hope he is up in 2-3 years 5) make panic moves so that people won't say 'same old, same old' Which route to bona fide starting pitching were you talking about?
  21. the key is that the Twins can't panic and make stupid moves trying to fix the entire rotation in one year. Step 1 is find decent enough pitching to get through next season while not being awful. Step 2 is to find ways to add legit good young arms that can be there long term. Maybe that is through a significant Dozier trade if the match is there. Maybe that is identifying a failed prospect that can be had for very little and taking a chance. Maybe there are lesser trade for lower level upside prospects that can be made.
  22. Probably the next show that I watch but not until the end of October because I have a vacation coming up (Philippines). Does Netflix always release the entire season of their shows on the same date?
  23. You forgot the part of the equation where another team would need to sign Suzuki and surrender a pick.
  24. Video game trade ideas are trading everyone on the roster for exactly what you want. The board is upset that Suzuki, Plouffe, Kintzler and Brian $#%^^%#$^#$^ Duensing weren't traded at the deadline. It also seems like the Twins are going to be able to get exactly what they want for Santana and Dozier. I can almost guarantee that the only suitable trade package for one of them (if not both of them) won't include a MLB ready starter. This team needs to take talent first and worry about positions second.
  25. For the first time in many years there is a lot of optimism surrounding the Wolves. Several of the ESPN podcasters that I listen are pumping them up to 45+ wins with very few predicting a <.500 record. That is a big step to take but at least things are looking good. The first interesting thing to happen so far this year (since the last thread) is that Garnett will retire. I thought that was likely when both Aldrich and Hill signed. Dieng and Towns will play the bulk of the minutes. I hope Bjelica gets some opportunities and then the two veterans form a solid bench which the Wolves lacked last year. In addition to that Pekovic is out for the season or the team thinks that. Pekovic being on the team never really bothered me since they have tons of unused cap space anyway and no team was ever going to trade anything for him. But who cares about those two. The Wolves have 3 potential stars in Towns, Wiggins and Lavine and 3 really good players in Rubio, Dunn and Dieng. That is quite a core of a team there if they can add 1-2 more very good players to it.
