  1. Oh great now the mythical Wilingham trades are being mentioned again. I like how it just becomes a 'they should have taken the best offer' without having any idea if a team was actually making an offer for a 33 yr old that had frequent back injuries. I am sure the FO will be endlessly criticized about not trading Santana (assuming they don't) for some mythical offer that likely doesn't exist for a 33 yr old with steroid and a UCL issue (successfully rehabbed so far) that is due 25-30M. If a prospect similar to Adalberto Mejia is offered with the Twins picking up 3M-ish/yr of the contract I am comfortable with the deal. But there actually has to be something good offered instead of some mythical 'they should have traded him for the best offer'. That is saying that you would accept peanuts if that was the best offer. Cashner's trade means nothing as far as Santana's trade value is concerned. Cashner is (just) younger than 30 and is on a one year deal. Of course he has more value.
  2. No, you keep Santana even if you don't think the team can contend in 2017. The depth in the rotation is so bad right now that even without bad luck they could be worse than this year. This year the starters ranks 2nd to last in the majors in ERA at 5.19. I can at least see some hope for the offense and the bullpen next season. This is why you don't just give Santana away for any random lottery ticket. If there is a good return for Santana then he should be traded. Why everyone is in a hurry to make this team worse is baffling.
  3. Make one argument that Milone or Nolasco should be in the rotation. And it is almost impossible to make an argument that they should be back next year. That is the problem. You might be okay with 2-3 Pat Dean's being in the rotation next year but almost all of the AA/AAA pitchers pretty much suck. Next year's rotation Berrios Duffey Gibson Hughes is a possibility but I think he is toast at this point. Perhaps May but the pickings are slim within the organization. If you don't have Ervin then you are diving into FA again or trading prospects for a MLB pitcher. Everyone seems to be in a hurry to dump a solid MLB pitcher when the team's #1 issue going forward is starting pitching. Considering how bad the pitching is behind Santana there had better be a decent prospect involved.
  4. There is usually more to it than that. For example they might have seen him pressing because things didn't get better for 5 starts in the minors. He had some combination of BB problems, K problems or H/ER problems in 4 of the 5 starts. I think they saw something they didn't like in how he was pitching and got him out of there before things became worse.
  5. So in other words you have nobody else to offer this year (aside from Berrios). May would be a good option for next spring though. The problem is that Berrios can't replace Nolasco, Milone and Santana in the rotation. What are you planning on spending salary relief on? FA is full of mostly older players and usually they want to sign contracts longer than 2 years. So the only reason to trade Santana is if the prospects are actually good. That is the key to the whole trade. There are plenty of spots that can be opened up and spending FA dollars is likely a poor choice unless you go big money.
  6. Name the AA/AAA pitchers (besides Berrios) that you want to call up this season or even at the beginning of next year. Pat Dean, Andrew Albers and Logan Darnell won't be around for contending years either. If the Twins can actually get a talented prospect back then trade him but he should not be moved just to move him.
  7. Most of the board is saying that Nolasco or Milone can be DFA'd at anytime and should have already been DFA'd. It doesn't work DFA them and then trade Santana. That way you lose both of them from the rotation. But nobody should be under any illusions that they will have any more or less trade value if they stay in the rotation.
  8. Like I said I would have kept Buxton down longer. Berrios threw 4 poor MLB starts and then threw 4/5 poor MiLB starts. He survived a few of them but I consider 5 BB's to be a poor start by a prospect in AAA.
  9. The time in between innings doesn't really affect the flow of the game. Stoppages during the inning should be the target.
  10. There is actually a different reason to wait until after the deadline on DFA'ing Nolasco or Millone. If the team finds a good deal for Santana (or even Gibson) then the Twins would lose 2 starters in a week and need 2 pitchers from AAA. I hate Nolasco with the fury of a 1000 suns but there is a whole lot of mediocrity in AA/AAA. Things can actually get worse for the Twins this year. It isn't always a great idea to DFA a mediocre veteran if you are rebuilding. This team doesn't need to see anymore of Pat Dean either. This is one reason that I wouldn't deal Santana just to clear his contract unless there was something decent in return.
  11. Do you disagree that he struggled initially when sent back to Rochester? Would you have promoted him after he pitched 3-4 great games or waited longer? Right now we are in the wait longer period that I am comfortable with. I would not be upset about this and blasting management for mishandling if he was promoted last week or next week. I will be upset if he stays in AAA for playoffs or something stupid. I was upset last year that he wasn't called up to pitch 2-3 innings/wk out of the bullpen and be part of the big league team. That move bought the team a year of control but I hate that part of the game.
  12. I appreciate your appreciation. My criticisms are about multiple pitching changes in one inning. If someone only faces 1-2 batters then it is likely that there are multiple pitching changes occurring.
  13. I said when Berrios was sent down that he shouldn't be back up until August. It took him 5 starts (the 4th was great) to get things sorted out in AAA and now he is putting together a dominant run. You can argue that he should be up now but I wouldn't have called him up weeks ago after 4 great starts in a row. I would have done the same with Buxton. He put together a great month and has looked awful at the plate again.
  14. No, commercials between innings are fine. Commercials suck when a team is down 1 run with runners on 1st and 2nd and the game is getting exciting. Loogy's by definition only pitch to 1-2 batters most of the time. Let's take a look at an overmanaging type (Joe Maddon) Travis Wood 14/49 games faced 1-2 batters Pedro Strop (a RHP) 9/44 games faced 1-2 batters Clayton Richard 11/25 games faced 1-2 batters that is 34 times on one team alone (only the 3 specialists) that a pitcher was brought in for 1-2 hitters and then exited. Sometimes they would have finished the inning but this is happening in games a lot more than you seem to think.
  15. You have completely missed the point. They wouldn't even have to go to commercial for multiple relief pitchers in an inning to kill the pace of the game in what should be the best part.
  16. No Trade veterans if the return is decent but start teaching the youngsters how to win. I think if the team goes .500+ in the 2nd half it would have a benefit on the team in 2017/2018.
  17. This doesn't bother me at all.
  18. And that is the reality of Ervin Santana trade market. He basically has no value. Either you pay him (part of his salary) to pitch for someone else (and still not get much back) or get a lesser prospect. I get neither excited about Ervin being gone or angry about Ervin coming back next year. Right now the Twins don't have 5 young pitchers that are better than him. I would rather see Ervin than Pat Dean next year. Nolasco however has negative value. I would be excited if he was gone tomorrow and I would be angry if he was back next year. I would rather see Pat Dean (or literally anyone) than Nolasco next year.
  19. Revenues don't measure anything as far as popularity is concerned. The revenues of all sports are exploding as desperate cable companies try to remain relevant. The problem here with RPers is that the game grinds to a complete halt in the late innings at times because there are multiple pitching changes (commercial breaks) in an inning. This absolutely does suck.
  20. Good grief. The team has went from horrifically awful to average in K/9 in a season and most of the below average K pitchers are likely out the door at the end of the season. Obviously they aren't done and the biggest question mark is whether or not these young pitchers can sustain the improvement but this is more than something to build on. This is a major accomplishment in the dreadfully awful season. Abad and Kintzler aren't really perfect trade candidates. Perfect trade candidates return something of value. They are having nice seasons but their value probably somewhere around the 30th best org prospect if the Twins are lucky. Fien is a decent comp for Kintzler (value wise). There were more than a few that criticized the Twins for not selling high. Except that nobody was buying high. They know what Fien and Kintzler (probably better than Fien but still...) are.
  21. I don't really care if they can pass the White Sox for 4th but I would like to the team win to start building momentum for next year. I do not think the team is anywhere close to as bad as they have been this year. Right now they are on a 60 win pace. If they went .500 (my realistic expectation) for the rest of the season they still would fall short of 70 wins and that is usually a top 5 draft pick.
  22. There is one big problem with this it's only 8% longer than 10 years ago. The problem is that the games were too long then and now they are longer. But I don't think game length is really the focus of this particular discussion. Pitching changes late in the game are as annoying as the constant barrage of timeouts at the end of close basketball game. I hate a 7th or 8th inning in a close gamethat consists of the first pitcher putting a couple of runners on and getting replaced by a specialist. TV advertisement. The specialist pitches to one batter and gets replaced. TV advertisement. During this time you meeting at the mound or two and the result is that the pace of play at what should be the best part of the game has ground to a complete halt. I have proposed before that if a RP enters a game then he has to face a minimum # of batters (2 or 3) before being replaced. Or be replaced between innings. This obviously affects LOOGY's the most.
  23. I think the Hill and Aldrich signings are attempts to strengthen the 7th to 10th spots on the bench. That is what killed the Wolves last year. Combine that with the Dunn draft pick and it is obvious that Thibideau is committing to a defense first improvement. The biggest reason to like this is that the Wolves spent relatively minimal dollars this offseason and maintain a lot of cap flexibility for next season. This season they were an intriguing destination based on young talent but that changes next year if they win 40+ games and look like a team poised to make the leap.
  24. I kept getting blasted last year for pointing out that Arcia should be in AAA because he was in an awful hitting funk. This year people are indifferent to him. But yes this is just like every topic on here. In spring training it was a travesty that Duffey wasn't in the rotation and a couple of months later people are questioning whether or not he is part of the rotation going forward or if he should have been a likely solid pitcher (a low 4's ERA) this year.
