  1. It's not. JBJ was not an 1-2 pick, he was a supplemental first round pick. Also he was never crowned the "best prospect in baseball" right before he made it to the majors. He was #50. Totally different pedestal and set of expectations for Buxton. Got to compare the expectations for Buxton with other #1 overall prospects and other top 2 drafted prospects.
  2. I think that the roster decisions that need to be made soon are a bit more complicated than "dropping a reliever and picking up Vargas". Here are the complications, on early roster decisions: They soon need to decide on Adrianza and O'Rourke, both about to come out of the 10-day DL and out of options. Easy decision for me: DFA both and see if they clear waivers.Their "best bet" to come up from Rochester (Park) is hurt with hammy issuesThey have pitchers with options in the majors (Duffey, Mejia) but one has been a starter and the other lights out.The best player for bench depth and versatility for the Twins, right now, might not be Vargas, but Niko Goodrum, who has been on fire in Rochester (.353/.389/.647) and can pretty much play every position but catcher. When Molitor is looking and his bench and being disgusted, he is looking at Mr .143 as well (.143/.143/.143), below replacement level, Danny Santana (who is out of options.)In SSS Tonkin has not been awful (but 100% LOB and 0% FB/HR might change that quickly upon regression to normal), but has career lows in K/9 and BB/9. But still is SSSBreslow, on the other hand, has bigger issues: The arm angle change experiment that was supposedly going to help him increase his velocity, has failed. His velocity this season is 2 mph below last season, and 87 mph fastballs do not cut it. What I would do? DFA Breslow and Santana, bring up Goodrum and Vargas, and after Park returns, depending on performance, flip with Vargas (who has options).
  3. Look at the Twins roster and tell me how many players under 25 are signed to mlb contracts... You play in the MLB, you have an mlb contract.
  4. This is incorrect. They usually sign them (have been signing them) to minor league contracts, but there is not a place that says that you cannot sign him to a major league contact.
  5. Your prerogative, but, again, you have not posted anything that says there is a limit in the contract, if that is a major league contract. My point is that he will get a major league contract and be on the 40-man roster right away, unlike the cases of Yoan Moncada, Yadier Alvarez, etc who are the kind of people who will get affected by this. Feel free to ignore the difference, but it does not make it go away
  6. Show me a single link that says that there is a limit in the contract they can offer, if this is an MLB contract. One.
  7. Who leaves $ on the table is the Japanese League teams, not the players, because the posting fee (that goes to teams and not players) has a cap.
  8. That is for the bonus. There is no limit for the contract, esp. since he will be on the 40-man roster and given an MLB contract. Someone can sign him for a 6/$120million contract if they wanted to Were he a minor leaguer who would had to sign a minor league contract (like most young IFA,) if would had been a different story.
  9. That's inaccurate. See above.
  10. The CBA and the IFA cap is fairly irrelevant in this case. The cap has to do with the bonus $ and not the contract $. Most teams sign high level prospects to high bonuses but give them MiLB contracts, because they are not MLB-ready. Otani is MLB-ready and could be signed to an MLB contract with zero or $1 bonus, so he will not affect a team's IFA cap. This will be about the contract in years and $ and not about the signing bonus. Looking at his numbers as a pitcher he looks a lot like Darvish and Tanaka did at a similar age, and slightly better than Dice-K. The novelty is that he also hits and runs the bases. I suspect that there are a lot of teams that will see this as an unnecessary risk, and Nishioka is a prime example that hitting in Japan does not always translate. He might want to do both, but he might have to settle for a team that would sell novelty, instead of a competitive team
  11. Did you see what he wrote about his stuff? (straight fastball, no change up, mixed up with breaking stuff) The only pathetic thing here is him saying that despite that he will take him 1-1. The data he presented does not justify his conclusion.
  12. Sure. He said that, but he has no skin in the game. He is not the Twins and does not care about who the Twins will take, or how the Twins will do. He is one of those guys who get paid by the word, and by saying that, it makes it a better story.
  13. FIP is "what happened". xFIP (or SIERA) is "what should happen."
  14. Definitely not a huge fan of Greene with the 1-1 pick. Even KLaw who likes the guy, has this to say about his stuff (from his piece yesterday here). Emphasis mine. Greene's fastball doesn't have much life, but it's very easy. He threw two changeups, both 89 mph, one in the dirt and one pretty good, especially because he maintained his arm speed. The biggest question mark within Greene's present arsenal is his breaking ball. He's throwing both a curveball and slider now and they run into each other. On Friday night you could see how he was raising his arm to get some forced angle on the curveball, but I think he's going to end up a slider guy So. What do we have here: A guy who can throw hard but his FB does not have much life (Tonkin anyone?), whose change up is a work in progress with only 6-10 mph differential from his FB, and the biggest questionmark is his breaking ball because he does not know what to do with it. And gets small catholic High School kids, none of whom are even on the radar for being half way decent, out with 100 mph because they cannot catch up to his fastball, and is a good Shortstop who hits against small catholic High School pitchers, none of whom are even on the radar for being half way decent, and he is a "great story". A great story might be, but a good 1st overall pick, he ain't. Would you pick a guy with Tonkin potential (maybe if he gets a second pitch) 1-1? I wouldn't. Sorry. No matter how good a story he is and no matter how much the ones who get paid by the word they write, write about him...
  15. Which, if you get rid of ERA and ERA+, is within standard error of his Twins' line (3.94 FIP vs 4.19 FIP is pretty insignificant with a SS = 6)
  16. Check out how the numbers are after you take his age 22-24 pre-prime seasons. Eyeballing, FIP, K/9, BB/9 would look the same before and after Twins. Same for arguments' sake if you want to do the 3 seasons with the Twins vs. the 3 previous seasons. That's who he is, after he learned how to pitch.
  17. Not sure that I like the short playing OF. That triple was preventable if Buxton was playing at regular depth...
  18. Do you remember Gooden's curveball? This kid does not have that.
  19. Don't know why, but the word oxymoron always reminds me of this:
  20. Would you take Chapman at 1-1? He likely is the ceiling of Greene or slightly above Greene's ceiling. I wouldn't.
  21. It is not the height. That's Pedro Martinez & Greg Maddux height. Brandon McKay has practically exactly the same stats this season against very similar competition, but unlike Bukauskas, a. he has been doing it for 3 seasons and b. is a lefty. Still too early though
  22. This will be the new Pierzynski of Mientkiewicz if the Twins sing him. Bukauskas (think book-HOUSE-cash with softer ending and no H in house) No wonder the kid goes by JB, even though his middle name is Allen
  23. What a difference firing Tom Brunansky made...
