Article: Who Says No? Trevor Plouffe Edition
Thrylos replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No way. Horrible inconsistency. Glove did get better last season, but just does not make enough contact. Also, Plouffe is not as fit as he used to be when he first came up. Pretty slow on the bases as well. Arguably Plouffe and Dozier were the two best players in the team without a long term contract. The problem is that this is a 92 loss team. Assuming that everyone is part of the solution will continue the problem... And the problem was not the scrubs on the bench, but the everyday players. -
Article: Who Says No? Brian Dozier Edition
Thrylos replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
WAR is a cumulative metric, so if one player has more PAs (and by hitting Dozier lead off, it is because of the manager) has higher WAR. For the sake of completeness and normalized Last 2 seasons: Dozier: 1330 PA, 8.9 rWAR, 7.3 fWAR, 6.69 rWAR/1000 PA, 5.49 fWAR/1000 PA Walker: 1220 PA, 7.6 rWAR, 6.4 fWAR, 6.22 rWAR/1000 PA, 5.24 fWAR/1000 PA Last 3 seasons: Dozier: 1670 PA, 9.6 rWAR, 6.8 fWAR, 5.74 rWAR/1000 PA, 4.07 fWAR/1000 PA Walker: 1750 PA, 10.1 rWAR, 9.0 fWAR, 5.77 rWAR/1000 PA, 5.14 fWAR/1000 PA Not that different the last 2 seasons, and Walker better the last 3 seasons. -
Article: Who Says No? Brian Dozier Edition
Thrylos replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think that if the Twins packaged him and Kohl Steward or Jose Berrios plus maybe another prospect, they can get Jordan Zimmermann. If they extend Zimmermann, who would you rather have? Competitive teams close holes and are opportunistic. And are not afraid to sell high. -
Article: Who Says No? Brian Dozier Edition
Thrylos replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
No way. Only one season with above league average OPS+. The Twins control him for 3 seasons and have the likes of Santana, Polanco, Gordon, Michael in the pipeline for the 2 middle infield positions. I'd sell high as a matter of fact and start 2015 with a middle infield of Escobar and Santana with Polanco waiting. -
Article: Who Should the Twins Add to their 40-Man?
Thrylos replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'd clear the roster a bit: Thompson, Fryer, Colabello, Herrmann gives them 8 spots. Then I would thing strategically about arbitration eligibles and STLHPs (Soft Tossing) Milone, Darnell, Gilmartin. Pick one. That makes 9 spots. Nunez, Schafer, Parmelee Do they belong to a contending team? Maybe one as the last guy at the end of the bench. Pick one. 11 spots. Think hard about the pen. Archer, Pressly, Swrzak, Oliveros or Fien? Pick two. 14 Spots. Duensing or Thielbar, pick one. 15 spots. That is your core. Add Sano, Rosario & Meyer. 12 spots. Rethink who you picked earlier and add 2 names. 10 spots open. About the right amount for a team that finished 99+96+96+92 to have to work itself into a competitive team. If the 40 man roster is about the same as 2014, the results will be similar. And this is not too good. I think a cleanup is needed... One of the major frustrations I have about this front office is that it approaches the off-season the same way every season, regardless winning 63 or 93 games the previous season. Even keel is ok in smooth water, during a storm even keel is disastrous- 37 replies

Article: NoDak Twins Fan Offseason Blueprint
Thrylos replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
How many wins? Cannot keep 90% of a team that lost 92 games and expect it to win. Why invest $20+ million on Rasmus and Masterson (who I don't think is healthy btw) if you are not going to compete. Better off playing the kids. -

Sub "Rosario" with "Buxton" and let me know how you feel... -
I see absolutely no reason for Rosario not to be a starting OF for the Twins in 2015. Are there 3 better OFs (bat/glove combination) who are MLB-ready right now in the Twins' organization?

Article: On Twins Pitching and Philosophy
Thrylos replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think that the best pitch depends on the pitcher and the situation. The one problem with the Twins' philosophy is the cookie cutter approach that the former pitching coach was the father of, and unfortunately, seems to be running around the organization. Got to play to each pitcher's strengths and ignore their weaknesses. If someone has a horrible sinker, don't teach him one and make him throw it, focus on improving his good stuff. Better results, more impact right away and less work to get from good to great than from average or below average to great.- 34 replies

Article: Jordan Schafer: Breakout or Bust
Thrylos replied to jorgenswest's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't know, but: If they keep the same players, how are they going to win 92 instead of losing 92? And if they determine that they cannot win 92, I think that they are better served by playing young people instead of signing mediocre people. Likely applies more to the Correia-type FA SP that Ryan wants to sign, but to the bench as well. So, I'd rather see Danny Ortiz and Levi Michael on the bench than Schafer, Parmelee, Colabello, & Nunez and will be fine with a Rosario, Hicks, Arcia as the starting OF -
The thing with the outfield is that infielders can also become outfielders. Remember that crazy Ryan talk about Sano being an outfielder potentially? That would give the Twins the top OF pair of prospects in all baseball. Add Rosario, Kepler and Harrison (another convertible IF) and you got 5 potential good OF prospects, before you even get to Adam Walker...

Article: Playing Hurt: A Painful Debate
Thrylos replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not all ailments are equal. If someone can worsen his condition by playing instead of resting for a day or two, and, thus, missing more time he should not play. If he cannot worsen his condition, but just a discomfort (like flu-like symptoms) he should play. The biggest issue is how the Twins are handling the DL. I hope that Molitor handles that different than Gardenhire and I hope that he does not carry 3 catchers and 13 pitchers. It is a combination problem. -
Article: How Much Has Molitor Helped?
Thrylos replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
To answer the question "how much has Molitor helped", you got to look at the bottom line between 2013 and 2014: Plus 4 wins. I got to argue that Hughes probably deserves at least one of those. So 3. Divided between Molitor and Brunansky. That's about 1.5 wins a piece, unless Gardy and Andy & pals cost the team 10 more than they cost in 2013. Just does not add up at the end....- 19 replies

Article: What to do: Eduardo Escobar
Thrylos replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
They got to go with D there and Escobar's is better than Santana's. I suspect that when pitchers adjust, Escobar's bat will be better than Santana's as well. The issue with Escobar as utility is that he cannot play third all that well (despite Gardenhire playing him there.) Given that either Nunez and/or Plouffe (depending on where Sano is starting the season) will be one or two utility guys, I'd say: think outside the box, sell high and trade Santana. And not only because of Escobar. If "the arrival of Buxton is imminent", Polanco, who is the same age as Buxton, and has performed better than Buxton at the same (and higher) levels should be there before Buxton, at least as soon as 2016, if not at 2015, and he will be the Twins' starting SS. -
Article: Players Speak About Paul Molitor
Thrylos replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is good stuff, because it comes from minor leaguers and from people outside the organization. But. I'd love to hear what they had to say about Gardenhire in the same sentence, to see how much validity to give to those opinions.- 30 replies

Article: Postseason Review: Bullpen
Thrylos replied to stringer bell's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Pat Neshek is a free agent and GardyNAndy are gone, so... The bullpen was a week point for the Twins. I am not convinced that Perkins could and should be the closer. He looks a lot like Yesterday Eddie, who would had been a set up guy (at best) in a championship team. Fien and Thielbar are AAAA guys. Would not mind if the Twins take a chance with Pelfrey as a late inning reliever if healthy. But this pen does need lots of work... (and 85 mph Milone 'fast'balls won't cut it.) -

Article: Twins to Name Paul Molitor Manager
Thrylos replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well... methinks that 4 years of 99+96+96+92 allows for some cynicism? No? Molitor was my third choice (after Lovullo & Mient,) mainly because the other two have had recent success (i.e. world series titles) outside the organization and come from winning cultures. Could had been worse: Scotty or Vavry. The trick will be to see how many of Gardy's buddy's remain in the coaching stuff. I'd take Bruno and that's about it. The rest have to go and the pitching coach better be outside this organization. If not, the Twins' way is alive and well, thank you. -
Injuries are not out of the GM's or the manager's or the Minor League director's control. Certain people are injury-prone. Buxton is one of them. Let see them starting to fine him $500 for any head first slide and every dive out there in meaningless games. And all MiLB games are meaningless. I think that injury-proneness should be a factor in prospect rankings. And having TJ surgery or knee surgery or something because of an one time event, is much different that injuring body part after body part because you are reckless. And I would have to be convinced that Buxton is not reckless at this point. And the Twins should do something to protect their investment.

Good stuff. The most telling response was the only one he got excited about and he actually said that he was inspired to go to work for that reason. Around minute 21. He said how much the Twins brand meant to him. Not the people, not winning baseball games, not the organization. The Brand. (And this is really old school marketing/product management talk to boot) Another reason the Twins really need a baseball person on top of him, to win. Let him deal with the Brand. Let someone else care about winning games.

Article: An Open Letter to Terry Ryan
Thrylos replied to Secondary User's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Money & Spending is not the issue. Is who is doing it. Cannot think of Ryan spending $ in a productive way. He is a spendthrift and he is one of the biggest problems in this organization (as is his boss.)- 28 replies
