  1. This doesn't happen without a confluence of events, without any one of which, we don't have this outcome. Shelby was key, but so was Moore's own righteous repulsiveness, and Jones' competence and likability. Additionally (and perhaps most importantly), I hope Moore's accusers feel some vindication; this hasn't been an easy time for them.
  2. The real Trump must still be sleeping. (About as classy as you get and can imagine from this man). https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/940795587733151744
  3. I had this response too. (among others)
  4. Do I know you from somewhere? You seem familiar.
  5. But who watches the watchers, er, moderates the mods? Thanks for keeping this place tidy and dolling out only the most deserved infraction points.
  6. Bleh. Well, a renewed reason to hate the Yanks.
  7. If the 2017 and 2018 pools can't be combined, I think the int'l money sent to the M's was returned and the deal perhaps voided. 1.25 (remaining) + 1 (from M's) + 200K (for Braves prospect) = 2.45 Mil, which is awfully close to the announced terms. Though Berardino's tweet conflicts with my thinking.
  8. "It's not a crime, but if it were, it was my lawyer who admitted to having done it."
  9. I'm sure any plan that these teams have for wooing Ohtani includes the ability to trade for additional dollars should they need to. Money may be the determining factor, but surely its a factor. The Twins should be exploring all fronts, to ensure they don't have Int'l money left unspent.
  10. Be specific. Since you're privy enough to judge, what is it they could have done better? This criticism ignores that Ohtani's choice seems to be regional. The whole walk-the-talk criticism is context-deaf, and awfully blowhard.
  11. Now do we trade the Int'l pool money or sign some former Brave prospects...
  12. Why don't we just kill the Onion all together?
  13. There's a reason that sport message boards in general don't have many women users--anonymity contributes to allowing and buying into so-called locker-room talk. I can think of few BYTO threads that weren't the most welcoming to female users; though those days are gone, we all can still slip into sloppy acquiesce to base sexist humor (and probably worse).
  14. To be clear, I wasn't seriously suggesting that we should title it Men are Pigs (though I did laugh when Nick made that the title), I was pushing back against what I felt was a rather innocent suggestion, though as it seems there was probably some subtext that I wasn't privy to underlying your post. In the future if you find yourself not being able to respond to a post of mine, PMs are always appreciated.
  15. Yes. But when those different values are aggregated into one metric, the metric may tell us more about the values of the creator than the thing that it measures.
  16. Because it points to the inherent subjectivity in an endeavor which, well, should be objective.
  17. You think he intentionally was suggesting to limit the scope of discussion? It was a pretty innocent suggestion that was meant to broaden the discussion, not narrow it. Call it Men are Pigs, the point is to have a thread to deal with the trend of men in prominence and power finally facing consequences for their awful behavior.
  18. He needs to go.
  19. Why would any team acquire Santana while giving up pitching? Santana has more value to the pitching-hungry Twins than other pitching-hungry teams, as the Twins are closer to contention. The teams that are more competitive than the Twins, seek better pitchers than Santana, and would rather give up dollars than player-assets. The only kind of trade I could see working would involve the Twins taking on money, say Santana, etc. for Price or Lester, who have their own warts and far worse contracts.
  20. Some (a lot of) indication that Flynn may have flipped, as his Turkish partner just plead. He looks pretty dirty,* and has lots of crossover to Kushner,** who faces new allegations of undisclosed bank-rolling by Russia via the paradise papers (non-MSM source). That's largely just this past couple days. I think in the end, we'll all marvel at how bold and impudent these men were. *two links here, one at each word. **long load time for interactive chart
  21. You're really stretching to find some criticism. "Personally" is the operative word there, and you're construing the word in a way that makes your criticism make sense (that they've never scouted him, never personally seen video of him, or whatever), rather than making Levine's entire statement make sense (that they haven't personally met the guy, know what his personality is like, etc. but they know his skill level and the potential impact he can have on their team).
  22. Paying Jaime Garcia's contract to play for the Yankees counts as nonzero evidence. Not sure it necessarily indicates a willingness to spend on FA, but the recent reporting gives people reason to be hopeful.
  23. The idea of a third catcher is to safeguard against an injury should you pinch hit. You can't throw any position player behind the plate like you can at first base or in the outfield.
  24. Just turned to the Princess Bride; I feel good about this posse.
