  1. Lack of Ks is disconcerting, but glad he's stretching out. Maybe he's Rochester bound soon...
  2. Oh right. But we are well beyond the pale of tax breaks and deregulating being good for the economy. The Bush years are evidence of this. Look if the private sector isn't spending their money, and they aren't creating jobs--it's left to no other entity other than government (as messy as it might be at it) to create liquidity and jobs. It's not as if there aren't any number of public works jobs that need to get done and that would actually help private enterprise.
  3. 1) 2) 3) 4) Diamond 5) Blackburn
  4. Right. While I'm sure you're happy to have the money to do with as you see fit (charity); the notion that lower taxes on hire earners will create more jobs is just silly.
  5. You give them a break, because clearly if they had more money, they'd start hiring more people. Clearly.
  6. Well, inflation or lower wages, however you want to put it is exactly what Wall Street types want. They want to lower the standard of living among American people to keep profit margins equal or better than that of the past. I can't believe we, as a nation, tolerate this. Indeed what is good for hyper-capitalists is not good for all Americans. As I've said before, if we lower the tax rate to zero for "job creators," there's still economical incentive to hire non-Americans, because their labor is cheaper, because their standard of living is cheaper, because such countries haven't gone through their own French Revolution. What Wall Street types don't understand is that cheap labor is a limited resource and soon enough the working force of China and Indonesia will have had enough and will violently oppose their working conditions. And how will Mitt Romney's equity firms continue to make money without providing goods or services? Poor private equity; really, boo ****ing hoo. I'm so over the notion of free market clown car crap. (Glunn, this might not marry your point, so apologies; I've had a drink or seven, so a rant feels good.)
  7. This average offense has been 7th to 6th in WAR in all of MLB since the beginning of June. Yes, small sample size, but that sample size also has Plouffe and Revere playing everyday. Are we the bottom fifth offense of April/May? No. But we're probably not quite as good as lately either, but there's reason to believe we'll be top 10 (a top third in league/all of baseball), which I suppose could be construed to be average, save that we hit in a pitcher's park. Our offense need only be 'statistically' average if our pitching talent is actually average to compete (thanks AL Central!), because of our home park. Having a statically average (or rather top third) offense in Target Field is a boon, any way you cut it. The Twins would be stupid not to capitalize on the offense in 2013 and 2014.
  8. Supposedly the team couldn't compete after 2008 either, but they managed two more playoff runs in 09 and 10. It's not impossible to see the team competing next year and especially the year after. The lineup even sans Span or Willingham will be able to produce runs. Of course, out ability to compete depends on acquiring durable top-of-the-rotation starters, but we might get that cheaply by resigning Baker, and developing a healthy Gibson. Hendricks and Diamond can probably fill out the rotation. This is a rather glib sketch, but the Twins being competitive over the next two seasons isn't as far fetched as you're making it. That said, if TR gets blown away by offers for either or both, he should take the deals. As others have said, Span is more replaceable, so I'd rather trade him and keep Willingham.
  9. Overall good for whom? Who exactly benefits from outsourcing? Not me. Probably not you. At some point we might actually have to be choose patriotism over capitalism; I doubt you have the balls to make the right choice.
  10. What's he lying about? Let's see how much you really care about truth-telling.
  11. I think this is key, and why Romney doesn't want to release his taxes, because he's paying at significantly lower rate than anyone in the middle class. The notion that tax breaks create jobs becomes complicated when you consider these job-creators already have a favorable tax code. The sad truth is that if we brought taxes to zero, the free market would still push jobs overseas because American labor is too expensive. What's the Republican solution then? Slowly lower the quality of life of the middle class?
  12. I came here to post this point. That we turn an actual asset into a pile of poop is frustrating to say the least.
  13. Do we have an ignore feature on this forum? If so, I'm not seeing one. The OPer is wasting everyone's time.
  14. [video=youtube_share;Ud3mMj0AZZk] No matter your politics, the production value here is eerily effective. I've often wondered why there's not more 'art' to such ads. Thoughts? Other favorite ads from the past?
  15. You're not exactly working the count if you're letting strikes go by you. Both philosophies make sense, and of course, they are counters to one another.
  16. Two dollar u-call its.
  17. Or that our starting pitching is historically bad. The offense, beyond April, has been relatively good. The bullpen seems like smoke and mirrors, but I suppose it always is. The defense is improved in the outfield but the infield with Plouffe (who is better at 3rd but makes cringe worthy plays often enough) and Dozier who was well-regarded defensively but has been a hot mess. Even Carroll has missed on fundamental plays. In my mind, the only significant improvement is the offense. The Doumit/Willingham duo is probably better for the Twins than Kubel/Cuddyer (at a discount, too (kudos, JR)) combined with Mauer and Morneau being healthy and one of the two returning to form, along with Plouffemania mark the improvements. And while the bullpen has been much better, the starting pitching has regressed unimaginably over last year. Who thought Diamond would be our best option? Not even Nick could have predicated the pitching would be this bad.
  18. We'd all like to believe Parmelee has a bright future, but he wasn't going to play over Doumit/Morneau/Willingham/Mauer, so it makes complete sense to send the guy down to get at bats. The Twins have been oddly healthy on the offensive side of the ball the season, but of course that's undone by the absurd injuries and ineffectiveness of the pitching staff.
  19. Right, and Lee doesn't have the concussion problems that Morneau has. The Twins, given that they would have to pay much of his salary, should hold out for much more value, as Morneau is younger and was a better player.
  20. Arcia 3 hits. Hermensen seven no earned-run innings 5/2 k/bb. Bromberg two shut out innings in relief (coming back from serious injury, right?).
  21. You hold onto Morneau, and hope he regains value over the next year. Whether we trade him in the offseason, at the '13 deadline, he'll likely have more value than he has now, and if he doesn't let the guy play out his contract rather than paying him to play for some other team and receiving players similar to whom the Twins got for Delmon Young.
  22. Sounds like Batum wants to play with the Twolves too, but sounds like Portland will match and refuse to sign and trade....
  23. It's better than so much other television, but the reviews listed at imdb aren't overtly critical. It's well-written and well-acted. It's Sorkin so it's certainly not for right wingers.
  24. I just caught the first episode of the Newsroom and was really impressed. Created by Aaron Sorkin and staring Jeff Daniels. Thoughts?
  25. The Twins have no business spending that kind of money on free agency. Buy some better medical personal and some scouts familiar with advanced statistics. Also, buy more pie.
