  1. I said "supplement the roster with veterans". I never said make "big contract splashes." You're right, that strawman sure was smug.
  2. Do you understand how development of the human body works. Almost exclusively, 29 year old AA players don't have enough room for improvement (potential) to ever be consider a 'prospect.' The word prospect means that there's room for development. Please don't be stubborn on this point. It's just silly.
  3. Meh. Draw what reckless conclusions you will. But not spending 90 million in what obviously the team considers a rebuilding year is hardly reason to think that the payroll will be 60 million in 2015/16. It's totally baseless negativity, no matter how many naysayers line up in this thread.
  4. You seriously think the Twins will have a 60 million payroll in 2015? Because it will be less than that if they don't sign some significant free agents by then. I'm all about having some reasonable cynicism, but this is baseless negativity. The Twins did have a 100 million payroll. And even after 2011's losing season, still had a 90 million 2012 team. If the Twins sign Saunders (or others) the payroll will approach 90 million this year. I'm not suggesting that the Twins will have a payroll of 100 million in 2015, but it's pretty reasonable to expect something more than a roster full of serfs and arb players.
  5. People aren't factoring the payroll flexibility. The team will not be just full of prospects (and Mauer) in 2015 and 2016, the Twins will supplement their young core with plenty of veterans, you betcha.
  6. Even-handed take, Nick.
  7. Why take that route? Arcia or Hicks may not lose their prospect status this year.
  8. I'll wait until 2016 to make a judgment on this offseason.
  9. This is a strange story. It's already interesting to see the rumor mongering at work, but I wonder where it will go. I think Te'o ends up on the Raiders for some reason...
  10. Well, at least they'd be spending money!
  11. How ****ing hard is it to spell Pseudo?
  12. Intent surely matters. It should be clear to everyone, even Nick Blackburn's mother, that these comments are playful and not at all mean-spirited. While everyone wishes him health and happiness in his personal life, a little bit of guff from the peanut gallery is part of the price of being a public figure, a millionaire, and poor baseball player. This is blunt, but not classless: I can be sad that Nick got hurt, but I can also find solace that he won't be pitching for my favorite baseball team and other, better players can be given a chance to play. That's not shameful. It's honest.
  13. There's a threshold where spending more money no longer translates into enough wins where it's palatable for management/ownership. There's diminishing returns on chasing wins with dollars. I get that. Everyone should get that. Maybe the Twins mismanaged that with Correa, and missed an opportunity to acquire a better asset, that's fair criticism. I think it's also fair that the Twins should be looking to acquire assets at below market costs no matter if it necessarily helps compete or not in 2013, because those affordable assets might become tradeable assets. However, we generally accept that market costs for free agency tend to be overpayments (when compared to extensions and arbitration), and thus, acquiring such tradeable/affordable assets may not be possible. And again, spending the money might neither result in enough wins or in players that could be traded for other players. I have no notion that saving money today will result in money to spend tomorrow, but I also think its reckless to recommend spending money that doesn't result in tangible competitiveness either now or in the future. I do believe that this kind of 'goodwill' from management to ownership MAY make it more palatable for ownership to go over budget when there's a real competitive competitive advantage to be gained. (I'm thinking of Kenny Rodgers here). All this said, it's really hard for me to get too worked about the FO not spending more money.
  14. Just make Mauer the shortstop and go out and find a catcher.
  15. Settled? As long as it you cleared it with the magistrate and you were satisfied, right? Wtf And it is I, alone, who get tired of your schtick. You've never had problems with more than one poster in a thread, god knows. I make no alms about my capacity for politeness and I'm not pretending I'm welcoming of just any old opinion, either.
  16. For the umpteenth time (you patronizing, douche),no one disagrees with this. No one ever said shame was a complete response to issues of homophobia. No one ever choose shaming over "the more lasting...more effective work." You are making a false choice, (a sort of reverse strawman). The rub was that somehow people were bringing up the fact that somehow Hunter's first amendment rights were at stake. (Go back and read yourself!) If you want to revise your entire argument as some champion of reason, that's fine, but anyone paying attention knows different. Seriously, you can't be a total douche about being reasonable and not being a total douche. My contention is that you really don't have perspective, so there's nothing to skew. No disagrees with the lasting power of thoughtful discourse--so if that's your argument, one wonders why you keep finding a place of disagreement. I've got my own theories, but I'm tired of your defensive flailing so I'll keep them to myself.
  17. Look, no one really disagrees with the notion that we should appeal to people's reason, though I think that's naive. Where the rub is that somehow it's imprudent and offensive to want to shame behavior like Torii's. That you went so far as to bring in MLK into the discussion seems tonedeaf, as if MLK would invite the KKK to a round table of ideas. Again, I think there's a confusion between balance and objectivity. To characterize my point of view as offended sentimentality is craptastic and isn't reasonable, it's petty and disingenuous. I don't necessarily want a response here because I don't think you really disagree with me on any of these points, but you're hellbent on seizing some higherground and maybe I am too, and that's just an impasse.
  18. I took a bit of chance and went after another BJ pitcher in Smoral. He was hurt last year, but the guy is huge, so there's some projection to go along with his sleeperness. We'll see. I was looking to take the Reds first rounder Nick Travieso, but that pick seemed so boring.
  19. Especially when you make them up!
  20. I was really hoping Stroman would slip to my second round pick. Oh well.
  21. No one has suggested anything alternative to this. Again, I really don't think you have a point of view here, you just like being a d!ck.
  22. MLK? How pathetic. No one is begetting violence. MLK shamed and decried and sang on a ****ing mountain top the wrongs against his people. He didn't use violence to do that, but goddamn he shamed racists, every chance he got. You're POV is nothing like MLK; and the fact that you coined him is utterly insulting. What exactly is your point of view? It sounds to me that you're suggesting we should give space and voice to cash-heads like Hunter, and not shame them, because really if we listen to them, we'll get to some noble place. It's stupid. And comical. And absolutely insincere. Honestly, and I'm sure everyone sees it, but you've been communicating this: 1) We should shut up about gun control (too soon!), and 2) we should talk about the possible legitimacy of homophobia. It's godawful phony bull****.
  23. It gets better results than bigot-coddling methinks.
  24. No one wants to take the 'platform' away, it's about placing comments such as these in greater context. In any case, as flp noted, Hunter issued a (half-hearted) retraction. That's meaningful, if small, victory. And it probably wasn't soft-spoken syllogisms that motivated Hunter to respond...
  25. Shame has nothing to do with changing the mind of the bigot; it's about sending a cultural message. But we've gone over this.
